In previous months, I had always walked past Shakeaway (a cafe devoted to milkshakes); one because I usually consist of a diet of mashed air, and soaked alfalfa sprouts (not that it seems to do me any good, mind you) and two, because it is always full of kids who would only be close to my age if you added three of them together. The other day though, my 18 year old step brother told me that I need to put down my cup of alfalfa sprouts and head to Shakeaway, so off I went.
Thankfully, it was when all the kids were in school that I popped in so I had the servers all to myself. They were very helpful when I told them that I was a Shakeaway virgin, and to please be gentle with me. The menu was a bit overwhelming, seeing that they have over 150 different choices of milkshakes, and that is before you get into the other options - mixing flavours, adding 'tops' or 'bottoms' (hello!) or the daily specials - so I took my time, thought about having a tic tac milkshake, a haribo star mix, or a cucumber milkshake (yuck?!?!), before settling on a combo of battenburg and butterscotch. It was absolutely delicious.
Personally speaking, I'm not sure that this is probably the best food option for the hoards of teens and tweenies that come in - I think I read something once about sugar not being good for them - but they seem to love this place, even though the milkshakes can add up a bit in price. (Mum and dad, this is where your kids pocket money is going). Still, I can see myself coming in again - I have my eye on the Jamaican ginger cake milkshake. read more
