Shafer Memorials is our family owned & run monument business that has been serving the Mitchell SD and SE South Dakota communities since 1919. We have 6 generations of monumental design that allows us to take what we've learned personally from our previous generations and apply it to how we provide your family with caring consultation and personalized design options for your personal monument, or that of your loved one. We firmly believe that 'Friendly Consultation, Without Obligation' is the only way that we will do business. Because we do our own engraving of our monuments designed we can carry a large monument display both outside and inside of our office location at 1023 North Main St. If you are able to come to the office for a consultation you will be able to stand next to full size monuments to best tell what the granite colors really look like. History

Established in 1919.

Since 1919, Shafer Memorials has been located at 1023 North Main in Mitchell, SD. The family-owned business has always had the office in their home. The garage and shop were a combination until 1979 when a new and modern shop was built just across the alley from the office. The new shop area is where the granite units are engraved now. The office display is still on North Main, just 5 blocks north of the Corn Palace. The office has been enlarged and remodeled many times over the years to fit the growing business. The first generation of Shafer Memorials began engraving by hand chiseling the letters into the granite. Today, to do the engraving & shape carving of flowers and leaves or rounded designs, a mixture of air and sand is forced through a hose and nozzle guided by skilled hands who have learned the craft from a generation before . The granite unit is brought back from the quarries cut and polished, but the process of designing and engraving is completed in our personal shop.

Meet the Business Owner: Kim S.

In 2011 Kim Shafer-Swank and her husband Rick, generation 5, purchased the family business from her parents. Their son Jeremy, the 6th generation, was already working in the family business having learned the hands on skill of sandblasting, shape carving and more from his grandfather Gary Shafer. Their son Alex joined the business in 2021 to assist clients in the office and to also learn the engraving and placing processes as well.
