Stopped here on a Wednesday afternoon and there was one another shopper. Cramped in just the right way. Stacks of LPs. Organized in sections but there were records everywhere. Hard to find exactly what you're looking for but the guy working was able to point me in the right direction a few times. Prices can be cheap ($1.98) but didn't check grade/condition. Some new releases priced $20-$30 which is good. Had CDs priced below $10. They are remodeling apparently. Will be back with more time to spare. read more

Made a return visit here the other day, my first in a while. A bit hard to browse, as records and CDs are stacked everywhere. That's standard in shops with good inventory, so no worries there. What WAS a problem is that one of the employees was sitting in the upper section, where the CDs are, smoking. The place REEKED of smoke, and I had to leave after only a few minutes. Even then, my clothes stunk of smoke--like they did back in the 1990s after a night of hanging out in bars in Philly. Not cool. read more

Just the best anywhere outside of Philly in the region. To us collectors of a certain vintage, a throwback to exactly "how it used to be". What's missing is the tyrannical attitude record store owners used to have pre-internet! Prices on-point, generally. Repeat business is rewarded with good chats, and the occasional deal. Sure, you can buy in the internet... but why not support a local business, and check the condition for yourself? They get fantastic stuff, in unpredictable (ofc) waves. Let's put it this way, I have passed up hard to find records there that I still regret years later not getting. Genre-wise, heavy and the rock and jazz, but the occasional synth-pop or electronic gem will surface from time to time. I have been to this location three times to purchase 45 RPM records. The first visit the owner wasn't in but another man made me a pretty good deal on some. The second time I came the owner Dave was in and he also made me a pretty decent deal. Today however was a totally different situation. Dave the owner was there and after spending an hour digging through boxes which by the way are all over the floor and not in any particular order just a big mess he went through the records one at a time and tried to charge me a huge amount for them claiming some of them were worth a lot of money and I knew that. My opinion is if they were worth a lot of money maybe he would display them on shelves rather than have them piled in boxes on the floor in a big mess. I asked him to take out the ones that had big value and he removed six of them leaving 45 records. He then asked me again for more than a dollar a record when last time I paid barely half a dollar per record. He would not deal and seems to think keeping the records and not getting $30 for them and piling them back onto the floor makes more sense than making a customer who it is my third from out of town visit happy. I Don't understand these record store owners sometimes they listen to their music more than sell records. I won't be back! I have been to several record stores where they have sold me records for three for a dollar or even five for a dollar and they are neatly displayed on shelves or in racks in alphabetical order. This store is a big mess even with CDs piled all over the place and they don't seem to care other than the sit and listen to their music. The customer seems last in their mind. read more

First time at Shady Dog! This is a great place to bring your vinyl for selling and buying. Dave was so nice, he went through all of my albums, one by one, first checking to see if he wanted to buy it and secondly checking for scratches. All the while we chatted about artists, concerts, and the crazy condition that some people bring their albums into him. I walked away with a nice chunk of change!! Everybody says the store is dumpy, but if you grew up in the 70s, the sight (and the vintage smell) will bring you back to those days! Memory heaven. My daughter and I spent almost 2 hours in the store yesterday looking at and buying records and cds. You name it, they have it. Artists you don't find everyday. Albums you haven't seen in 20 (ok 30) or more years. Everything is alphabetized. Such a great experience. When we walked in, we were greeted and informed of the sales. We bought about 30 or so items and and before he even gave us the "sale" price, he was knocking dollars off every item. Then added the discount. Damn! Had I known that, I could have bought a few more, lol. Just kidding. An absolutely great experience. Between the diversity of what was playing in the store to flipping through row after row of albums and remembering this cover or that song or the way the album you had back in 197/8 something always skipped at this song or the inside record jacket. Such memories. I thought I was back in high school. And that was 30+ years ago. My teenage daughter who definitely has different tastes than I was equally thrilled to find her stash of goodies. "OMG! They have X. (Inset name of group I have never heard of). She came away quite happy as well. Bit of a drive for us to get out there, but as happy as we were, I can definitely see another visit or two or three in the coming months. I did not get either gentlemen's name, but I want to thank them both for all their patience and time. I know you were looking to close and we kept finding one more item (and one more). Great place in Berwyn not big but real small but that's okay size is not everything!Its got character which is big in my book first time here and I will come back picked up a used Talking Heads Cd and to boot it's a West German in nature which puts another angle in it how would you like to be a CD without a country I sure wouldn't!I guess if the Iron Curtain would not of fell this Cd would not feel obsolete! read more

I've been here twice and was generally pleased on both visits. The guys that work there are very knowledgeable and enthusiastic about music while being very friendly. The selection is great for classic rock and the like, they also have a back room with tons of Jazz and Classical. The prices are right in the pocket of not being too cheap but not expensive at all. The first time I went in they were having a 15% off sale which was cool. You can tell they only sell records that are in decent to great condition because everything I bought was more or less in great shape. The 2 dollar bin has yielded a couple of great finds that were in excellent condition as well. I sold some records here too, they picked through to see what they wanted and offered less than I expected it to be but offered a larger price in store credit. I bought the allotment of my store credit and went over that amount and they still called it even so that was a nice gesture. Like others said, it's on the small side, you have to move out of the way for people sometimes and move a box here and there to look whats under it, but I'd rather have a store that has too many records than too little. I will absolutely keep checking back at this place for their fair prices and very good selection with guys who really know the music they are selling. read more

If you want to feel cool without feeling like you're being judged, hang out in Shady Dog for a bit. It is, like a previous reviewer said, just records records and more records. It's one of those places where you don't realize the time passing but all of a sudden you've spent an hour there. Add in great music playing in the background and a chatty, helpful owner who makes it clear that whatever type of music you're into is fine by him, and you've got the perfect combination. I think it's funny that another reviewer mentioned High Fidelity, because the owner mentioned that book/movie the other day, joking that sometimes he doesn't want to sell the best records to people who aren't worthy of them. But the previous reviewer is right, they definitely don't give out a snobby vibe. Plus, the discount bin has some great finds, and their sales are awesome! (The sale going on right now is called the "Everyone's Gone to the Shore Sale.") On my first visit I got Ray Charles, Ella Fitzgerald, Billie Holiday, Miles Davis, and a three-disc set of Scott Joplin piano rags for under 30 bucks. I took them home to my shiny new record player, put on some Ray Charles, and slow danced in the living room with my fiance. Any store that can give me THAT experience is definitely worth 5 stars. read more

The owners of this place seem like they're always having a terrific day - asking you if you need help, suggesting things you might also listen to, even playing your favorite Beatles record while you browse. I've been buying music from these guys since they were in Wayne, and their low-key Berwyn location is the perfect spot for this laid-back atmosphere. Interesting point of fact - much of their business is conducted online via their website, sending rare and unique vinyl and CD selections all over the world. So if you can't make the trip to the store, don't fret, because the online browsing and ordering processes seem pretty simple. Extremely high end obscure record store. Selection ,if you want something unusual or rare, this place has it. It also has mint/near mint/vg LPs of rare or unusual things. I saw a more complete collection of Blues, Jazz, Rock/Psychadelia here than anywhere else, and the condition of the Lps were excellent. This is the place to go if you want a rare or specific LP in good condition, and a friendly staff to boot. Free parking, too! read more

(note this place has moved from wayne to berywn, which is still in the burbs) collecting records in one of my vices. getting records in the city can be a bit frustrating because the selection can be picked over. when i venture to the burbs, this joint is my mutha f-in spot. it is owned by these cool old classic rock dudes (think freedomrock, turn it up). when my girls and i would go here and we told them about our djane nite, they helped us select records and gave us some good deals and even wanted to come see us spin! these guys are more than happy to discuss records with true devotees and aren't offended when you disagree with their tastes. they welcome your opinions. they have an email list too so you can request records or ask questions on their selection. this place is not pretentious at all. no fancy lounge area or modern furniture. it is a space with the necessary posters, but mostly it is just records, records and records. there are piles upon piles of records, so be prepared to be on the floor kneeling to rummage through them all. they have a lot of blues and jazz and pysch rock. my tastes are really specific, but these dudes are always willing to keep an eye out for records for you. it is not near philly, so if you are without a car, it can be a chore to take the regional rail here, but it is well worth it. i have spent hours here browsing and not once have a i left without carrying some records. if you don't wanna deal with the hipster crap and pay insane $ for used records, check this place out. stay and listen to the yardbirds and let these guys tell you how philly music scene has changed and how it used to be, without the snotty high fidelity aftertaste. read more

The guys are great - incredibly unpretenious and they have the best $.99 cent bin you'll find anywhere and reasonable prices on the choicer stuff. Plus, they always have some kind of double digit % deal off. Best record store I've ever been to. Like other people said, if you don't have a car, take the R5 (Paoli / Thorndale) line to Berwyn. Nearby - Great ice cream down the street at Handles and Felini's Cafe is a great place to grab lunch/early dinner (BYOB) & John's Village Market has great hoagies & cheesesteaks. read more

This place is great and so much more than "classic rock" as one reviewer suggests. I was sorry to see them leave Wayne, but glad to see they stayed in the area. Seven or eight years ago I decided to build my jazz collection. With the help of Dave and Mike -- the two owners -- I have added more than 1000 discs to my collection. I am constantly amazed by their knowledge. I don't think there is a disc or album I have purchased that they don't know. Over the years my family has become so dependent on these guys that before each birthday or holiday, they wander in and just ask them to recommend music for me. Despite the size of my collection, they seem to know what I have and don't have and always come up with eight to ten albums that "Darrell has to have". If I haven't been the store for a little while, I don't worry that I may have missed a great opportunity to add to my collection. Dave or Mike will drop me a line and let me know that they have just made a great purchase of hard to find jazz. I haven't ventured out to many other music stores in the Philadelphia area, but with Shady Dog just down the street, I don't feel a need to do so. read more

The Classical and Blues section are impressive. You're pretty much guaranteed to find something you'll like here. I'm so happy that Shady Dog stayed in the area-what a pearl! For those with an eclectic ear, Shady Dog is a mecca. Yeah you'll find the latest Top 40 stuff, but in addition the store is filled with new and used vinyl and CD gems. And their prices are lower than the big box stores like Best Buy and Target. The boys at Shady Dog know music! You'll be hard pressed to stump them. They are happy to order anything you desire and get it to you within days. But the real treat about Shady Dog is roaming through their collection finding unusual treats you'd never even know existed. I find great stuff each and everytime. If all record/CD stores were like Shady Dog, the iTunes store would be out business. It's not shopping-it's a life experience! read more

Some good records in here, but it's pretty disorganized. They don't give you much when you sell records here, so I'd only buy here. It's sort of like a garage sale with only records, in suburban Pennsylvania, run by some older gentlemen. Mostly classic rock: Bowie, Dylan, Grateful Dead etc. Some limited jazz and indie rock. Not much reggae, ska, or obscure albums/record labels. read more

Shady Dog is pretty good. It's a medium sized record store. The store itself is a little cramped and disorganized, but if you can get past that, there are some real gems. In addition to having fair priced "classic" records, the store has a great number of rarities that pop up. Also, the dollar bin is a pretty great if you are looking to fill up missing spots in your collection with well known records. The guys that run it are really good dudes and will even let you play a record that you don't know anything about but might want to buy. They also have a limited CD selection that has some surprisingly interesting rarities. My only suggestion is maybe to straighten the store out a little more, as there are thousands of records stacked up in the back that you can;t really look through as they are piled so high. Recommended. Probably the best record store in the area. read more

I went here due to the previous ratings...and was disappointed to discover they were misleading. This is the kind of place that sells records at high prices, just because they are old. Whoever prices the records seems to have little concern for the records' condition, and more for making profit. For example, don't expect to pay under $30 for a Beatles record, even if they're as worn out as your parents' copies, and sold without plastic sleeves. I saw records that normally stay under $15 on sale here for $44! CD's are equally overpriced, averaging $8-10 for used, often filthy discs. Even worse, they keep a lot of CDs in cardboard boxes that they stack ON TOP of the records. As if they had no care for the records that cost so much money. Beware of the vinyl bargain bin - the stuff they are trying to sell for $1-2 is all scratched beyond playability, and has more in common with trash. The store is small and very disorganized for its size. I couldn't even browse the jazz section because it looks like they've been piling crap all over it for years. read more

After being told to check this store out by a co-worker that knew that I bought records, I decided on a lazy Saturday to check this place out. First, I checked their website before going and saw right on the front of their page that there was a 20% off sale going on. I thought great! I get to the store, it's being helmed by two gentlemen and I'm browsing around. One of the gentlemen approaches me, says hi and tells me that everything with a orange sticker is 15% off. This jarred my memory that I had seen the website that said everything was 20% off. I mentioned that I had seen the website and the gentlemen said something to the effect of "Well, if you spend about $100 I'll give you 20% off". I then reiterated that the website clearly stated everything was 20% off. He then replied,"Ok, since you mentioned it I will honor that." I said thank you and proceeded to walk right out the door. I waited a few months but then, being the fiend that I am, decided to give it one more try. It was a Monday and again I went on line to check their hours, I saw they were open until 6pm. I got there at 5:15pm to see a hand written sign on the front door saying that they will be closing at 5pm on this day. Ugh! This store is not that far from me and it saddens me that there aren't many record stores and this one has to be like this. read more

I love this store, I always have a great time when I go in, and I always find some unique and interesting piece of vinyl. It's perfect if you love getting lost for a while in stacks of records. It's a bit of a drive for me, but it has always been worth it. The owners are knowledgeable and and always make you feel welcome. You are free to browse uninhibited and chat with the owners while they play you something you might enjoy. Parking is a little tight in front, so I park on a nearby side street and walk a block or two. read more
