I've recently started coming to Shadow Ranch Park with my baby and it's quickly become one of our go-to spots. The park has consistently been clean and well maintained, which I really appreciate as a parent. I also feel comfortable here. I haven't encountered any issues, and it feels safe and family friendly. I love that there are two separate play areas for different age groups, so both smaller and bigger kids have space to play comfortably. The only small improvements I'd suggest would be giving the grass a slight trim and possibly bringing back the tire swing or replacing it with another feature. Lots of open space and fields. Great for all sorts of parties. Overall, I'm very satisfied and happy to have found such a nice local park for our outings. read more

First time visiting and I have to say it was a nice park with a playground area for children. They had slides and swings for different ages. They also had tables scattered around for sitting. Overall it was fairly clean and restrooms are available. I just wish they had more shaded areas and a barbecue area for picnics. read more

Shadow Ranch is a fun park for children of all ages. The equipment is clean and safe, the playground is modern; swings, slides, shade and clean sand. There are also several huge fields for active sports, playing and socializing. Shadow Ranch Park also has a basketball court a baseball field and public bathrooms. This park is also dog friendly. Shadow Ranch Park is great for parties and outdoor events with an area with multiple picnic tables, shade and grassy areas to sit on and a water fountain. The small parking lot does fill up if multiple parties or events are happening, especially on the weekends. The equipment, especially the swings and slides can be hot during the midday sun. There is also a small area for toddlers to play that has limited equipment, sand pit and two rocking horses that look like Dinosaurs. This park is not gated but does have a partial gate around the larger equipment area, seems to detour children from running out. The downside, like many public areas can have people without homes living their. When we visited we saw a few homeless people in the back corner closest to the field and driveway exit. Also, someone appeared to being "living" in the woman's larger bathroom stall with all their belongings. Didn't feel safe to use the bathroom with a toddler. Haunted History: Shadow Ranch is a historic ranch house, built from 1869-1872, was one of the first ten properties to be designated as a city Historic-Cultural Monument (HCM #9) it also has a haunted history. The house that sits on the property has a Hollywood influence and haunted history. This property has been owed by many famous people who have worked in Hollywood, the most famous Hollywood story is that the screenplay for the 1939 film 'The Wizard of Oz ' was written here between these walls. Shadow Ranch was given its name because of the amount of shade provided by the large eucalyptus trees. There aren't as many of the old eucalyptus trees. You can still see some really huge stumps left behind, still around the house. Many paranormal investigations have taken place inside of the old ranch house. People have reported shadow figures, strange lights, a woman in a Victorian dress, a little girl seen walking around the house at night, and also a little boy on the second floor, who is seen (from outside) looking out of the upstairs windows. Love this park!!! The playground is perfect for toddlers!!! They have their own playground where it's age appropriate and safe!!.. I haven't seen any homeless really, there's police who often patrol the area... there's also a preschool and parent and me programs. read more

I love coming here on the hottest days in the valley. To be outdoors when it's over 100 degrees is like walking in a sauna. And it's free. No gym or spa fee required. I like walking around and breaking a huge sweat with no effort. It's an in readable work out. After, finding a shady spot to throw a towel down, or not, and lay in the weeds for a sweat nap. I closed my eyes in the shade and wake up burnt in the sun. How many hours went by. Who reviews a park anyways. I like how folks setup 20 tables, a bouncer, and 10 ice chests, rope off 100 square feet, and throw a park party. I wish I knew 200 people to throw a park party. I'd get one on those Trump pinata and grill half done chicken and carne asada. Bring all your pets with you and let the run around off leash like everyone else too. That's is considerate to everyone. I'm sure no one will say anything. Enroll your kids in the shadow raunch recreational programs. The teachers are fun and passionate about what they do. They welcome parent participation and appreciate and I courage it. One of the best community parks in the valley. read more

This is a beautiful new playground for all ages. All the equipment is new and shaded. They also have great swings and lots of room for kids to run around. They have a huge grass area and workout equipment for the adults too. Love this park and will definitely come again! read more

I would have liked this park a lot better if there wasn't some lady walking around with her 3 large dogs unleashed, therefore ruining it for me with my leashed dog. As much as I would try to avoid her, she kept coming in our direction. Look, if you want to let your dogs, loose, then take them somewhere that is designated for that. That is all I am saying. Aside from that, the park is small, but nice and I would probably would have enjoyed it if it was not for her. read more

Basketball Court, 4 sided Baseball Field, Large Soccer Field, Big Kids Area. What marks this park is the old building lying in the dead center of it. There are many trees so the beginning part is very well shaded. There is a nice Ice Cream Truck that hangs around there too. Safer than most parks in Van Nuys or other areas. read more

The best thing about this park is it is hidden. It is on the big street of Vanowen, but goes way back deep. It is usually not crowded and just nice and quiet. There is a nice big play area for kids, a basketball court, a few soccer fields and a big baseball field in the back I have never seen used. read more

Shadow ranch karate. Sensei Ray is great. My guy is young so sensei makes it super fun while still teaching basic movements. Great introductory class. Ray is great. Parking is also easy and there parks are great. Clean, friendly and great people all around. read more

On Sundays, if you want your little ones to get some outdoor time and not get crammed inside the chuck e cheese or in a mall, come here. Although the play area can get really hot, there is a mister to cool off. There is also an ice cream truck that comes by. Very clean. The only complaint is that there isn't enough grass. My daughter is 3 years old and started part time preschool at the Shadow park recreation center. I'm so over the moon with the wonderful program and absolutely most amazing teachers that put hearts and minds to teach the kids! Each day they prepare wonderful activities. The kids there are absolutely sweet and smart! So amazed with that place. I love that building, very old and charming. The park overall is very nice with lots of shade, beautiful trees! I have noticed that they have some homeless people coming around but I have seen police there every day driving by! read more

Take our wee one here often. It's a very large park with two playground areas for kids. One geared more towards the little ones and a separate section for bigger kids. Everything seems to be handicap accessible as well. This place also has a couple large fields for baseball and/or soccer (or whatever), though the grass tends to be in just so-so condition. The park gets a lot of action. Homeless folks tend to hang out around the baseball fields as do off-leash dog walkers. Can get very busy on the weekends and special occasions. read more

Shadow Ranch Park is located in a very civilized area. Right away you are able to notice all the lovely trees and shaded areas that the park provides for you. The park has plenty of green areas for several different occasions. There is a big green field area for walking and playing soccer, also a basketball court and baseball field. Also there are two other different big green areas of grass for picnicking out at the park and for parties, such as baby showers and birthday parties. The park provides plenty of places to sit down. There are many benches and tables to sit down at and a bathroom area. The bathrooms are very clean and fully stocked with toilet paper and soap. There is a window in the bathroom that provides light into it, which does not give it a creepy feeling. There are two different play areas for young toddlers and then another area for older children. Both of the areas are separated but not far apart at all. It is easy to be able to watch both places at the same time. Both play areas are fairly new and clean. At the time there were only women and children occupying the park. Mothers watched their children while they played in the play areas. There were also many mothers there who had young children that were still in strollers. Seeing this gives a safe feeling of security and not having to be accompanied by a male figure. Another attraction of the park is the fending machines and the four water fountains. The fending machines provide water, juices and soda. Right by there is two water fountains and other by the play areas. The water fountains work correctly and seem to be clean. The best features of the park are all the big trees that provide shade and have squirrels running up and down them. It being a hot summer day this park would be a good place to get out of the sun to just relax. The best part of the park is the recreation center for summer camp, youth classes and pre-school. Inside the recreation center are rooms for all the different age groups that attend these camps and classes. There are also bathrooms provided inside the building, that are very clean and neat. Adult class that the recreation center also has is yoga and workshops for flower arranging and gift wrapping for the holiday seasons. Overall the park is very well kept up and groomed daily. The vibe of the park is mainly relaxation and safety, nonetheless the recreation center that has many activities for all age groups. This is one of the main attractions that the park has that involves the whole family, not just women and their children. Dad can play basketball or baseball, while mom helps out with gift wrapping and the children in the other room finger paint. read more

I did some EVPs out here at night (this park is supposedly haunted by the ghost of Albert Workman) and actually caught an EVP on my digital recorder. This was really cool because even in the scariest places I've been to with lots of paranormal activitiy, catching an EVP is rare. I was very impressed. This is a huge park. The trees are the oldest in the country. They come from Australia. The police patrons it all the time, so it's safe.

Have had several birthdays and picnics at this park. Lately, since there are soccer or baseball games going on, it can get a little crowded on the weekends. This park has many trees so in the summer its a nice place to have a picnic or something. My family has been coming here for many years now and have had some great memories at this park. read more

I grew up at this park, learned to ride my bike without training wheels here and practiced for my softball team with my grandpa. The renovations over the years have only made it better and better but I love the old "carriage house" vibe of the main building, which actually houses their public preschool! Now my daughter has grown up at Shadow Ranch and will continue to do so, as she is only five! My dog loves this park too as it's very pet friendly :) The eucalyptus trees behind the basketball courts are the perfect spot for a picnic with family and friends. Hands down, this park has everything for everyone, for all ages. I feel so lucky to live just a ten minute walk from this beautiful park! read more
