She is unorganized, cluttered, and it reflects in the way she treats people and her clients as she is inconsiderate and thoughtful, to say the least. I have lived in Menlo Park for 25 years but never knew of Sew N Go alterations until a few weeks ago when I saw the sign in the window from across the street. I am petite so frequently need things hemmed and this business is 1/4 mile from my home. I called and Natalee didn't pick up but texted a VERY NICE text back a few hours later. PERFECT! except it wasn't. Natalee rents a 400 sq ft working studio on the 2nd floor, and appears to live there some/ all of the time. As others have described, I had to change in her very cramped/ cluttered living area next to her sofa and with her two cats circling. Bright windows were behind me. There was no mirror, as one would expect. As others have described, she stood behind a SHEER curtain but then WALKED IN while I was still changing . She didn't appear startled and didn't apologize as she looked me up and down while I tried to cover myself. I decided then that I had to get out. But to get out alive, I entertained a quote for the alteration - $250 including a rush fee because I wanted the dress back in 4 business days (6 calendar days). She told me that most of her clients are very wealthy Atherton socialites and that they prefer that she come to them, so she doesn't receive visitors often. She mentioned that Gavin Newsom (who lives 300 miles away) is a regular client and that the restaurant across the street has a contract with her (for what - hemming tablecloths?). I told her that the quoted price was higher than i had anticipated- to me the work was fairly simple. That's when she said that when I walked in, she could tell that I appeared to be someone on a budget (thx!) and that I probably got the dress on sale (thx again ). I thanked her, and then took my dress down the street where I had a much less creepy experience and was quoted $110. Natalee texted me later to say that she could tell I wasn't comfortable in her studio. And she is right about that! But if you love cats, and cat hair, and clutter, and dank odors, and deliberate CRIMINAL intrusions while you are undressed in a semi-open area, + insults, and 2x pricing, then Natalee is your perfect seamstress. read more

Do not go here. We had a very poor experience on several occasions coming here. After our former tailor closed her doors, we found Natalie and she seemed great at first; however, we found that she was very hard to work with and we were not satisfied with the work either. Natalie is very hard to schedule with and gives you very specific time windows for when you can drop by. The first time we had told her what day we would pick up and upon arrival, I got scolded for not texting her first even thought she was there and aware of when we had planned to come pick up. She is also very impatient if you do not pick up your items right when she is finished with them. She also has very random and expensive pricing. I took my daughter to get a skirt taken in a little bit and she quoted us a steep $40 and then when I returned to pick it up, she said it was more work than she expected and charged us an extra $10. We might as well have bought a new skirt for that price not to mention saving us the hassle of coming here. My daughter did not like coming to Natalie's either because she does not have an actual dressing room and she had to change in the middle of her apartment that has windows to busy El Camino Real. Foolishly, we continued to use her a few more times but each time we regretted doing so and always said "We need to find a new tailor...". I had a poor experience with Natalie and do not recommend her. I took my daughter to her to have her $140 two layer Lulu's prom dress hemmed. We needed it for her prom which was in 15 days. After marking the hem, Natalie quoted me a price of $180. At some point she had additinally stated I would have to pay a fee for the "fitting" if I didn't go forward. I was frankly shocked at the $180 price, but I felt awkward about backing out and chose to go forward (mistake). I'll also note that her demanor was a bit agressive and a bit unpleasant, but at that time I ignored this warning sign. Natalie initially told us the dress would take 14 days. About 10 days in I became concerned about getting the dress and called her, by chance on Easter Sunday, to express my concern and ask if the dress could done earlier. I also asked if I could get it back to take it elsewhere. Natalie became incensed by this and said no. She agreed to have it ready two days earlier. The day it was ready, she brought it to my house and stated that I owed her an extra $36 because it had taken her "extra time". I pointed out that she had charged me a fee for service and that I had a receipt that said "total due $180" and that it said "paid". She said that I *had* to pay her the $36, and if didn't want to pay for her extra time, that I could instead pay her the "rush job" fee which was also $36 (is 12 days a rush job?), or I could pay her an extra $36 because she had made a minor fix to the zipper (she had offered to make this minor fix when she noticed it during the fitting). During this time, she became quite angry. She claimed she was insulted that I didn't want to pay for her time, claimed she had done lots of extra work that I didn't appreciate her for, claimed I was rude, and talked about how late she stayed up every night working on prom dresses. She was angry that I had called her to express my concern about the dress getting done. She mentioned multiple times how rude it was that I had called on Easter Sunday. (I thought I would just be leaving a message and hadn't expected her to answer the phone, not once, but twice!). As she became increasingly agitated and loud. I said nothing other than that I felt she had charged me $180 as a fee for service, and that she should stand by her fee. I showed her the recepit where it said "total due $180 / paid" but she continued to argue. I paid Natalie the extra $36 simply to end the issue. I'd been told this job would have cost about. $80 at nearby PKS and I felt I'd been scammed by Natalie, but it was my mistake to go with her in the first place and I wanted the whole thing to be over. However, it wasn't over. After Natalie left, she returned and began knocking frantically and angrily on my front door, demanding that I open the door and sign some sort of additional receipt. I refused to open it and she continued to knock on the door and scream at me for quite some time. I threatened to call the police and she finally left. The hem job that Natalie did on my daughter's dress seems great. I appreciate her fixing the zipper. But she was an incredibly unpleasant person to work with and $216 was an exorbitant fee compared to other options in the area. I don't like writing a bad review for someone but there are a lot of places one can go for alterations that are both a lot less expensive and a lot more pleasant. There is really no reason to pay a lot of money for such poor customer service. read more

I wish I had read all these negative reviews about Natalee before going to her shop! The positive reviews mainly refer to someone named Mara who does not seem to work there now. I had a HORRIBLE experience. Natalee asked for all the payment upfront for a reason I realized later: she knows people are going to refuse to pay her when they see her work. I bought her three items and two of them--pants and a duvet cover--were a disaster. She charged $90 for tailoring and hemming my sons's pants, which seemed exorbitant, but I reluctantly agreed to it bc I didn't have time to find another tailor. I ended up having to buy him a new pair of pants because she hemmed them too short and cut off the material so it can't be let down. The pants cost $90 pants so with her fee, it was a $180 loss for me. The second item was a duvet cover I had bought in Italy in which one end had no closure so the material gapped as it draped over the bed. She and I had a long conversation about the best way to close it. I wanted buttons, but she said that would be too much work and argued for an invisible zipper. After two and a half weeks she called and said two of the items were done, but not the duvet cover. I said I would wait for it, but when it had been a month I called and said I wanted to get everything back and she could skip the duvet cover. She said she'd do it the next day so I agreed to get it then. Well, the next day she apparently didn't have time to do the job she had agreed to so, instead of putting in an invisible zipper, she put in cheap annoying snaps. I would NEVER would have paid $90 for snaps, which could have been done cheaply by my dry cleaner! I reminded her that we had agreed upon a zipper--and she had written down on my ticket--and she claimed that couldn't find a long zipper and she should be free to change her mind about what she does without consulting me!. It was crazy. Then she accused me of being unpleasant and rude! In addition to all these weird personal interactions, I will also add that her shop (which appears to also be living space for her) is odd and lacks a changing room. There is a small entrance area and a larger back room. She told me I could change in the back room while my teenage son waited in the front room. I wasn't that comfortable bc the room had the shades up and faces the street but I did it anyway. Then after a few minutes, she walked in on me, opening the door while I was still undressed. Anyway, I could go on and on about the other strange ways she behaved, but the bottom line is she is incompetent and financially unethical and, if you choose to go to her, don't pay ahead of time. read more

I do not recommend Natalie. I brought her three items of clothing, was very specific on what I wanted done. She told me she would do exactly that but when we got the clothing back, it was still too wide for my son and my item was still not tight enough, they were falling off of me. Additionally, I thought the amount I paid for three items was ridiculously high, and she told me she gave me a discount. She had said it would be a simple job but she couldn't start it until the following week because of personal planning matters, even though she knew timing was an issue for me. Very frustrating. Expensive and wasted my time. I asked for a quote to hem the skirt of a two-layered bridesmaid dress, and Natalee said it would around be $35. I was happy to hear this since other places had quoted $60-$70. I brought the dress in and Natalee said it would be more expensive because it was actually 3 layers and the skirt had a slit. I thought that was reasonable until she told me the new price - $120. It seemed ridiculous that having one extra layer and a slit would make the cost almost 4x more expensive. It was the worst service ever. I asked Mara to replace a zipper in a sweatshirt and she did it in 3 weeks and badly. The zipper was not the right color, nor was the same type it was before. It looks shirred and as a consequence one part does not match with the other. When I asked why she did not let me know before changing the zipper about the color and that she was not going to be able to deliver the quality I was expecting, she said I should not expect the same quality as in the original store. I agree but what she did is not acceptable ( and she asked me to pay In advance) She asked me not to come back because I was a bad customer. I swear I won't! Only giving one star because I can't give zero! Do not go here!! I will never bring any items to be altered here. I was quoted a deposit, which I had to pay upfront of $500 dollars for simple alterations to my wedding dress. Needless to say I canceled the service, and was taken for 40 dollars all of a sudden as a consultation fee... A special made of fee I guess, since I wasn't presented with a price list showing such fee. What a waste of time and money!!!! Mara is friendly, professional and very responsive to her clientele. She does in-home pick-ups and deliveries, which is wonderfully convenient. We had her complete a large project sewing curtains for our house and her work was very high quality. She is detail-oriented and has a good sense of aesthetics--she delivered the curtains all carefully pressed and hung neatly, with a personal note in appreciation of our business. As an artist and entrepreneur myself, I appreciate these details and the personal touch that Mara brings to her work. The only issue we had in the process was that Mara had underestimated the amount of fabric needed for one part of the project. She found a creative solution to make things work, however, which we were happy with. I would highly recommend her. read more

I've had faster and cheaper service, but not in Menlo Park (see my review for Le's in Mountain View). I was happy with the price, as it was very affordable to have a few inches taken off of a pair of pants (and on top of that Mara gave me 10% off for being a new customer - and she said she does this for all new customers), and I was very pleased with the service. I got a call (and even a voicemail) the morning of the day I was quoted the job would be done, and I called back to ask her to hold on to the pants for me, b/c I wouldn't be able to come in until the following Monday due to my work schedule. She even offered to bring them by my house because it was on her way home. I was floored by this over-the-top service and commitment to her customers. I have had several items altered/tailored by Mara (suits and jeans) and the quality of work is 1st class. Mara is passionate about her craft - fashion, making clothes, sewing, etc., and that lays the foundation for quality work. Mara also works with J. Hilburn Men's Clothier for custom suits, shirts, pants, etc. I have purchased a suit and a sportcoat from Mara/Hilburn and I am very pleased with the quality and fit. The prices are very reasonable for what you get! Aside from the quality of work, Mara is the sweetest lady... easy to work with and she has a passion for understanding customer needs and delivering on them. Oh and you can forget trying to find another dedicated tailor/clothier in and around Menlo Park... the only other one I found was shady and schmaltzy. read more

She came out to my house to teach me how to sew a purse using a Simplicity Pattern I picked out at JoAnne Fabrics. Her fee was more economical than the local community colleges, and I had one-on-one instruction. I'd love to work with her in her business, so as to learn more. Now I am able to sew things on my own.
