That happened to me several times already they simply snap at me for asking something basic like: 'Is this stitching hand made or machine made?' or 'Where is this fabric from?' Also shortly after this shop opened I just googled fair trade fabric in the UK and their supplier's website showed straight as a first option. Their supplier's range had nothing more and nothing less to Ray-Stitch offer. It spoilt my illusion about this shop being customised or special in any way as no one seems to be bothered with selecting the shop's range with love and trade knowledge. Now I see it more like empty concept and good shop to pop down to for a set of new threads or fancy ribbons.

They did have some nice fabrics, but their prices are just so high - even compared to other independent shops. Also, "Klona" instead of Kona - but at least as expensive? Nope. Not impressed.

So two charming turkish men who run the shop were at our service. There were bundles of loose cloth on the cutting table and he picked up a black turkish wool scarf. They even showed him how to wear it and that service for a £5.00 is too good. They are not the Saville Row brand but are surely warm and friendly enough to help you buy something of good quality and choice. They also provide a basic tailoring service(I have not tested) including alterations.

As this tradition has slowly died the fabric shops have also relocated or closed. However Z. Butt Textiles has survived.The shop has been there since the 1950's and is family run - now in its 3rd generation (4th ready to take over in 10 years!) They are so nice as well. Catering mainly to the theatre business now - its busiest selling time is pantamine season. And the fabrics reflect this -- no high end Berwick street here - They are pretty basic with alot of polyester satins and chiffons / some upholstery fabrics and odds and ends .Cheaper to buy more than less, a tarif is put on meters less than 10. If you just need some plain cottons , calico or canvas with trims -or perhaps feel inspired - and have a need for a litttle gold poly lurex with sequin foil print or perhaps a little dayglow chiffon - it is all here.

They have such an extensive range of fabrics, cottons, synthetics, silks. I've come away with so many samples for clients in the past, because they have just so much choice. Rolls, and stands, and so so well organised. Upstairs they have trims, zips, all sorts, you can literally buy everything you need in a one stop shop sort of way, without being limited for options. They are also the sort of wonderful shop, that if they haven't got it (which is rare) they aren't scared to send you elsewhere, with knowledge and directions. Just lovely.

The shop seems quite small but only because it is full of fabric rolls from floor to ceiling. In the middle a staircase leads to the basement where you'll find the haberdashery. It is quite complete and i found everything i needed. Back to the street floor i ask the vendors for advice as i didn't want to lose time going threw everything myself. They were very helpful and sorted me in 10 minutes with every type of fabric i needed. They even took into account that i was making a Halloween costume and referred me affordable pieces of material that matched my desires. All in all, i had everything i needed 20 minutes after i walked in, and i REALLY appreciate efficiency. If you're looking for anything related to sewing and DIY clothing or accessories, this is the place and it is a very good place.

Firstly, the shop doesn't feel imposing or intimidating to enter, but neither does it feel like a chaotic heap of dirty fabric. I was quite content to wander around and browse/stroke the pretty fabrics without feeling I'll catch something, and without the staff hovering around me. When I was ready to make a purchase the gentleman who served me was very friendly and gave me sound advice on what direction the grain in my fabric went (so that I would know which way to cut it) and he was very accommodating to my specific requests. Also unique among the fabric shops around here, Bovorik has a decent basic haberdashery selection, with things like needles, ribbons, elastic, fabric dyes and all the other bits and pieces you might need.

I think they have some of the best prints on the street -there are around 20 shops and alot carry the same fabrics but this one has a a good selection of really fine and delicate printing with sophisticated colours. It is a strange reality that classic African printed and waxed cottons are designed in Africa and made primarily made in Holland sent to the Uk and sold back to Africans ! The fabrics are amazing - normally sold in 5.5m long by 3.5m wide pier piece the prices range but are around £43.00. Designs range from geometric shaded sheres to camera and heart prints / jewellery and flowers - they have a whimsical quality and the waxed cottons feel good to the touch. If you need some bright prints to add some colour to your life - I recommend Sheraton Textiles.

There are a few fabric shops on Berwick street so shop around for the fabric you want at the price you want. I've never bought fabric from a shop before, i've always gone to the market, and this place was a bit pricey at £3/m for undyed cotton. The place is an Aladdin's cave of fabric and the staff were helpful and asked what weight fabric i wanted. I hadn't a clue but they had some good advice for me. They even climbed over mountains of other fabric to get me the cloth i wanted. I'm going to keep shopping around for somewhere cheaper, but will go back if i'm in the area.

Literally comical. There are so many shops on Berwick Street, for price and value go to my favorite shop there The Cloth Shop. The selection is varied and the staff are much much much more friendly. Fabric shops should be enjoyable to enter and explore. No one should feel intimidated to go and ask for help or buy stuff. Lastly I feel bad for anyone who works there that is nice, because I have not met you and this review is focused on everyone being glum.
