I adore their bamboo silk and fair trade cottons. However, what stops me from being really passionate about this place is their distinct limitation in both - their range and staff and owner's knowledge about their goods. Worse then this is, they do not like being asked. That happened to me several times already they simply snap at me for asking something basic like: 'Is this stitching hand made or machine made?' or 'Where is this fabric from?' Also shortly after this shop opened I just googled fair trade fabric in the UK and their supplier's website showed straight as a first option. Their supplier's range had nothing more and nothing less to Ray-Stitch offer. It spoilt my illusion about this shop being customised or special in any way as no one seems to be bothered with selecting the shop's range with love and trade knowledge. Now I see it more like empty concept and good shop to pop down to for a set of new threads or fancy ribbons.

Apparently it used to have coffee, but that seems to not be there now. I saw a small section of Cotton & Steel (a popular fabric line) and, as I've been on the lookout for a specific print of theirs, asked if they had any more. The employee seemed really confused and pointed out their fabrics in cotton. I feel like not knowing the brands you carry - especially as an independent shop - isn't good salesmanship. They did have some nice fabrics, but their prices are just so high - even compared to other independent shops. Also, "Klona" instead of Kona - but at least as expensive? Nope. Not impressed.

As this tradition has slowly died the fabric shops have also relocated or closed. However Z. Butt Textiles has survived. The shop has been there since the 1950's and is family run - now in its 3rd generation (4th ready to take over in 10 years!) They are so nice as well. Catering mainly to the theatre business now - its busiest selling time is pantamine season. And the fabrics reflect this -- no high end Berwick street here - They are pretty basic with alot of polyester satins and chiffons / some upholstery fabrics and odds and ends .Cheaper to buy more than less, a tarif is put on meters less than 10. If you just need some plain cottons , calico or canvas with trims -or perhaps feel inspired - and have a need for a litttle gold poly lurex with sequin foil print or perhaps a little dayglow chiffon - it is all here.

As a Yank in unknown territory, I had mixed expectations for my former colonial overseer, but Mr Butt quickly turned my frown upside down. I went in to buy a Union Jack bandana and left with ten yards (meters for all you blokes out there) of fake fur. Next time I'm in London, I'll be sure to give Mr Butt a big "OY!"

I wondered if he was bit miffed that I disturbed him from listening to his radio show. Hmm...who knows. I came specifically for a tracing wheel but he didn't have any. Might be worth coming to if you're in the area and can't be bothered to go elsewhere for some fabric.

I think the highlight of my experience at sew fantastic was just being able to say i was going to a haberdashery. (i love that word) haberdashery haberdashery.... back to the review. I am assuming that the man working behind the counter owns the place, and it would seem as though he has come to resent the store and it's clientele over the years. they have some fun fabrics and i went in there to order a pillow, but when talking to him about the necessary dimensions he didn't seem to have the foggiest idea about fabrics or pillows... and so i ordered the wrong pillow size. when I showed up and found that they didn't match my pillow cases he convinced me to buy them anyways b/c i forced him to order them. I think in the future i will take my haberdashery needs somewhere else thank you very much.... haberdashery, balderdashery.

I can;t fault this place…read more The staff have always been wonderful, whether I've been in there for business or just for me. They have such an extensive range of fabrics, cottons, synthetics, silks. I've come away with so many samples for clients in the past, because they have just so much choice. Rolls, and stands, and so so well organised. Upstairs they have trims, zips, all sorts, you can literally buy everything you need in a one stop shop sort of way, without being limited for options. They are also the sort of wonderful shop, that if they haven't got it (which is rare) they aren't scared to send you elsewhere, with knowledge and directions. Just lovely.

Usually i'd know where to go and be sorted suite easily, but since i moved from Paris to London i'm always lost when it comes to find good and affordable specialised shops. A quick look on Google and there i am, going to Macculloch & Wallis one day before said Halloween (wouldn't be fun it it weren't last minute). The shop seems quite small but only because it is full of fabric rolls from floor to ceiling. In the middle a staircase leads to the basement where you'll find the haberdashery. It is quite complete and i found everything i needed. Back to the street floor i ask the vendors for advice as i didn't want to lose time going threw everything myself. They were very helpful and sorted me in 10 minutes with every type of fabric i needed. They even took into account that i was making a Halloween costume and referred me affordable pieces of material that matched my desires. All in all, i had everything i needed 20 minutes after i walked in, and i REALLY appreciate efficiency. If you're looking for anything related to sewing and DIY clothing or accessories, this is the place and it is a very good place.

I dusted off the sewing machine and headed out to Soho to purchase some fabric. There are a few fabric shops on Berwick street so shop around for the fabric you want at the price you want. I've never bought fabric from a shop before, i've always gone to the market, and this place was a bit pricey at £3/m for undyed cotton. The place is an Aladdin's cave of fabric and the staff were helpful and asked what weight fabric i wanted. I hadn't a clue but they had some good advice for me. They even climbed over mountains of other fabric to get me the cloth i wanted. I'm going to keep shopping around for somewhere cheaper, but will go back if i'm in the area.

However, not only is it…read moreoverpriced, (for ex. you can get the same metallic leatherette/coated fabric at Borovicks for £22.00 a meter instead of £35.00) the staff here are EXTREMELY rude. To be honest, most of the fabric stores on Berwick St. have grouchy and sullen employees, but this place is the worst. I have shopped at the fabric shops on Berwick Street since 2013 and the rotten attitude of the staff at this store (in my experience) has been consistent. It has not mattered who has worked there, that's the funny part, I am not even speaking about one person. Everyone I have ever encountered there is rude. About two years ago I mentioned how unpleasant the staff were to another salesperson at MacCulloch & Wallis and he told me that he used to work there, agreed that the staff were unfriendly and in particular worked a woman who customers always complained about. The negative vibes this store gives off has discouraged me from shopping there for about a year or more. But today I thought I would go in, because it does have a great selection. However, once again the Berwick Street Cloth Shop vibe was moody. Therefore I have finally decided to write this negative review because of my final horrible experience. I was looking at fabric bent down while a sales person was busy organizing the rolls of cloth across from me. She accidentally hit me in the face with the end of the fabric roll. I stammered "oh sorry" and as she turned around to glare at me, she aloofly said "what, did I hit you?" to which I replied "yes". She then very (surprise!) rudely responded "sorry". So I said "I am sorry I guess I am in the way" to which she said "no it's fine". LIKE OBVIOUSLY IT'S FINE I AM A CUSTOMER. It's absolutely okay to accidentally bump into someone or hit them in the face, but to do so and not react until the person who has been hit says sorry to which you then glare back is too much. Literally comical. There are so many shops on Berwick Street, for price and value go to my favorite shop there The Cloth Shop. The selection is varied and the staff are much much much more friendly. Fabric shops should be enjoyable to enter and explore. No one should feel intimidated to go and ask for help or buy stuff. Lastly I feel bad for anyone who works there that is nice, because I have not met you and this review is focused on everyone being glum. But in my experience I have only ever encountered mean spirited people. Two stars, one for beautiful goods and the other for the one nice employee who maybe exists there.
