As we know, indie shops can be hit or miss, since they tend to fit the owner's tastes...but I have to say, this shop had me wanting to buy ALL THE THINGS and start up many new crafts. (Restrained myself, as I had limited luggage space and Parisian craft shops on the itinerary.) Yarn and apparel fabrics were the main attractions for me--I picked up some cotton that later became a skirt, and a couple balls of bulky British yarn that are now keeping a friend's head warm in Toronto. I also added notions, markers, iron-ons, and paper goods to my craft arsenal. (I don't normally do paper stuff but how could I not buy giant cross-stitch paper??) I was super impressed by the machine parts collection--who knew that many feet existed?! I probably walked the whole store 3x to make sure I wasn't missing anything I couldn't live without. Anyway, amazing stock aside, the owner is incredibly sweet & kind. We had a nice little chat about the shop, and she graciously shared some business tips. Since that visit, I've been following her Instagram and *really* wish I had managed to take a class when I was in town. (Now I know for next time!!) The shop is bright, cheery, inviting, and beautifully pulled together. If you're in London and you or someone you love is a crafter, swing by this store. You're bound to find something(s) wonderful.

As this tradition has slowly died the fabric shops have also relocated or closed. However Z. Butt Textiles has survived. The shop has been there since the 1950's and is family run - now in its 3rd generation (4th ready to take over in 10 years!) They are so nice as well. Catering mainly to the theatre business now - its busiest selling time is pantamine season. And the fabrics reflect this -- no high end Berwick street here - They are pretty basic with alot of polyester satins and chiffons / some upholstery fabrics and odds and ends .Cheaper to buy more than less, a tarif is put on meters less than 10. If you just need some plain cottons , calico or canvas with trims -or perhaps feel inspired - and have a need for a litttle gold poly lurex with sequin foil print or perhaps a little dayglow chiffon - it is all here.

As a Yank in unknown territory, I had mixed expectations for my former colonial overseer, but Mr Butt quickly turned my frown upside down. I went in to buy a Union Jack bandana and left with ten yards (meters for all you blokes out there) of fake fur. Next time I'm in London, I'll be sure to give Mr Butt a big "OY!"

This shop has a very well selection of the outmost exclusive fabrics. It might be a bit of a trek to go all the way to St. Johns Wood, but it is worth it. They are also open on a Saturday, so you can combine it with your weekend plans. They are the biggest couture fabric store in England and have an unrivalled choice of materials, which are updated, with an almost daily delivery of new fabrics. When you start talking to the staff, they proudly show off their knowledge and even though I could not afford buying more then 50cm of a designer fabric, they still make me feel important. Their clientele spend £100/metre upwards... Welcome to Aladdin's Cave!

They sell luxury fabrics such as embroidered silk, black lace, velvet and furs that suit well for theatrical costume or bridal wear. In addition they have now added 'Peace Silk' to their merchandise. 'Peace Silk' means the moths are allowed to emerge from their cocoons to live out their full life cycle, conventional silk is made by boiling the intact cocoons and unwinding the single silk strand onto reels. Peace Silk has a different feel to commercial silk, it is soft, fluffy and light as a cloud. (There! and you thought I wouldn't explain the difference!) They have such an extensive range of fabrics, cottons, synthetics, silks. I've come away with so many samples for clients in the past, because they have just so much choice. Rolls, and stands, and so so well organised. Upstairs they have trims, zips, all sorts, you can literally buy everything you need in a one stop shop sort of way, without being limited for options. They are also the sort of wonderful shop, that if they haven't got it (which is rare) they aren't scared to send you elsewhere, with knowledge and directions. Just lovely.

Usually i'd know where to go and be sorted suite easily, but since i moved from Paris to London i'm always lost when it comes to find good and affordable specialised shops. A quick look on Google and there i am, going to Macculloch & Wallis one day before said Halloween (wouldn't be fun it it weren't last minute). The shop seems quite small but only because it is full of fabric rolls from floor to ceiling. In the middle a staircase leads to the basement where you'll find the haberdashery. It is quite complete and i found everything i needed. Back to the street floor i ask the vendors for advice as i didn't want to lose time going threw everything myself. They were very helpful and sorted me in 10 minutes with every type of fabric i needed. They even took into account that i was making a Halloween costume and referred me affordable pieces of material that matched my desires. All in all, i had everything i needed 20 minutes after i walked in, and i REALLY appreciate efficiency. If you're looking for anything related to sewing and DIY clothing or accessories, this is the place and it is a very good place.
