Positive: Great opportunity at high fence bulls, meals and conversation with Sara and Austin were great, great countryside and accommodations. Cabin is well maintained, includes plenty of space, and the fridge is stocked with everything you need. The strategy to hunt and kill bulls is on point and success is almost guaranteed. I brought my 12 year old son and met my longtime friend for a weekend of hunting and all of us found success on the bulls of our choice (i.e. nice 6x6, non-typical 7x7 (minus broken tines), and a spike for my son).
Negative: The things you can't control were amazing (i.e. success on trophy bulls, experience) but my biggest gripe was with the things you CAN control...and that was Pete's demeanor and general level of service. We agreed on a pre-negotiated discount for the bronze package and I don't recall being offered or seeing any bulls in this class (300-340). We offered to pay the price difference to get from bronze to silver package and Pete fought us to give up the pre-negotiated discount and pay full price for silver, saying things like "I'm sick of hunters bit**ing." At one point I said "I think we got off to the wrong foot and want to clearly understand the model," at which point he fought saying "I don't know why you're complaining, you're getting a good deal." He also told me to "check the meat market" to see what bulls cost him. He agreed with the pricing logic and agreed to move forward but was upset the remainder of the trip...despite us being grateful for the flexibility. When I chose the bull to hunt he said "I can see it now, if he's chipped more than just the back tine, I don't want to hear any bit**ing." Pete was already upset about a scenario that hadn't happened yet. Despite the bull I killed being chipped in over 4 places, which was typical among the bulls we saw, there was no complaint and I was just happy to have shot my first elk. Not that I needed a high five but there was zero handshake or "congrats" from Pete...not a big deal but there was NO excuse to not shake our hands and at least thank us for the business after spending a considerable amount of money at the end of our stay...as we thanked him for the experience.
Advice: You can have an AMAZING hunt here at Severson's but I would recommend making sure you're in complete agreement on bulls / price, and if you're looking for campfire chat and laughs, this might not be the hunt for you...unless you bring your company. Pete doesn't hunt or enjoy game meat which was one of the reasons there was silent / awkward dinner conversations. read more
