I came here as part of a wine tour organised by work friends - I…read morehadn't heard of Shut The Gate before, so was pleasantly surprised to see a charming place with outdoor braziers, seating, and a very friendly couple who love talking about their delicious wines! Shut The Gate is a boutique winery, specialising in many types of riesling, but they also source other grape varieties for their sav blanc and red blends. Prices are around the $20-$25 mark, and well worth it! The labels are beautiful too, some done by a London artist based on fairytales with the theme of 'shutting a gate' ;) Oh, and they have a couple of winery cats - that's definitely worth an extra star!

The house is set up for tastings for small groups and couples in nooks and on couches. Its the most relaxed and fun tasting in the clare area. no giant benches and feeling like they want you gone. Sit out side on the patio on a sunny day and enjoy a glass of something something, you won't regret it. One of my favorite wine producers, which was only enhanced by this experience.

A year ago I would have given this restaurant 5 stars: it has been one of our favourites for20+…read moreyears. However, after going there for lunch on Thursday I have downgraded it to three stars. The reasons for this are: The menus are presented on an A4 sheet of green paper, food on one side and wine on the other. Not the class of presentation we are used to here. The fish was the only menu item listed as GF; not every gluten intolerant person wants fish for lunch. We were specifically asked up front if we had any special dietary requirements but even so we were not told of any other GF alternatives. The home-made chorizo was slightly too dry and lacking in flavour. A sauce or relish was definitely required here. My wife had the pork belly. The waitress asked if she wanted it entrée or main size and said the main had 5 pieces of pork compared to 3 on the entrée. When the bill came we were staggered to see that to increase a $23 entrée to main was charged at an additional $28! I do not know how they can justify this. On the plus side the caramelised onion and Brie bruschetta was absolutely delicious and the bread roll was also very good, even though it was late in being served (we were beginning to think the butter dish was for decoration). Sorry Skillogalee, but you are no longer one of our 'must visit' establishments.

They had beautiful, calm music playing and aside from the fact that we were child-free, it was such a peaceful place to be. Now for the wines, they were all sublime, I wanted to buy all of them! Their taste was so unique and refreshing, I will be back to buy more.

There were 15 of us, and the staff seemed quite put out that we were crowding the space. One of them also seemed quite put out that we were there at all, and was on auto-pilot as she was pouring the wines. We had to ask quite often what it was that we were drinking, as she didn't bother telling us. I get the feeling that she thought we were just another drunk wine tour bus (not true), and didn't bother to find out whether we were serious about wine (which we were!). We were given some lovely wines to taste ... but they were way overpriced for what they were (one was $70 per bottle!!) - then again, the woman didn't give us much of a chance to savour the flavours, as she was rushing to get through them all and get us out of there. I don't think any of us purchased any wine there - and I think this was due mainly to the attitude of the staff. Won't be back here!

The flight I chose to taste included two selections I left with, their Grenache and that notable 109. Quite nice...and I look forward to trying them at leisure when home. The staff were very pleasant, and my son enjoyed his hot chocolate. Nice folks here, and tasty vino!
