The Greenpoint Star is what I might call a fakepaper…read more It's a weekly, granted, but it shares some content with the Queens Ledger, Brooklyn Downtown Star, Glendale Register, Queens Examiner, and several other papers -- which means that each week's edition is a melange of neighborhood-specific news reporting and shared content. I've been getting the paper by subscription for free for ages because I responded to a photograph-identifying contest they held: What is this bit of graffiti? Tell us, and win six months for free. Six turned to 12 turned to however many, and I'm happy to still get it in my mailbox. Seriously! Despite my reservations, the Star is worthwhile for several reasons. It often breaks uber-local news before the Manhattan dailies. Its Brooklyn and Queens politcal analysis and commentary is spirited and spunky. And it has several outstanding features. The Christa Cuts column, penned by a young woman who seems to have recently moved further down Long Island, is full of attitude. The "Been Mugged Recently?" clip-out response form seems to yield few responses. And the "Back in the Day" offers a slice of historic life unparalleled by other area papers. I can understand how the Ledger/Star Newspaper Group wants to capitalize on interpaper synergy, but I can't help but feel that half of the paper isn't intended for me. That said, I still read it every week, and if you live in Greenpoint, I still recommend you pick it up. You'll make a better citizen and resident.

This free miniature magazine, showcases all of the new and unique shops, boutiques, restaurants, bars, galleries, and high rise/lofts Jersey City and Hoboken now have to offer. The magazine is full color and glossy. This is not a cheap freebie newsprint magazine. It sets a precedent of what is yet to come for life "on the other side of the Hudson". The photographs inside are professionally taken and each store and article gets at least half a page or more. Justice is done for the local entrepreneurs and artists. New magazine does a great job showcasing the locals. Get a glimpse of what life is like for mothers, web-site pioneers, jewelry designers, and art enthusiasts. The web-site for New is equally impressive. New encourages community interaction and local submissions. Welcome to Jersey City and Hoboken. While the facades may change, hopefully the historic integrity will be kept and the attitudes will keep as down to Earth. What was once just the financial district and land of former warehouses is now an emerging art scene, urban haven, and home to bars and restaurants geared to the trendy, upper crust, and family focused.

It is cool to have a free paper that will entertain you for more than 5 minutes. It just keeps you in the know of what is going on. Ads in there also for places like Barcade, tell of upcoming events East/West beer ngiht and so on. I was actually revising and looking over that very issue again earlier today. (Jan5-18, cover had a story of 48 hours with a certain rock star). That title in itself makes it blog worthy and worth an actual look at the article which was very interesting. One guy actually talked about his waking up in the morning routines of eating cinnabons then alot of other healthy crap like squash, broccoli, beats, and kale but then use of some kinds of drugs. Ironic in that he seemed like a health nut with the food he actually consumed but used drugs and abused alcohol left and right. The bar and restaurant directory in the back makes alot of Brooklyn bars seem very appealing. I have also seen a few spots in there of places us yelp eliters got to sample at one point or another like Nita Nita and Woodwork. Thanks for the Reco's guys. Oh yeah then there is a sex with the natural redhead section on the back page, it is usually very funny stuff that explicitly involves penetration and sexual operations. Some more inappropriate than others. Overall- Yes, thank god it is free, I check out your magazine and now I need to look for the latest issue.
