As you open your mailbox, sitting there amongst the bills, ads and hate mail is your very own copy of Esquire Magazine. You are the first to read it, there is no sharing and no one has folded over pages or pulled out recipes they might want to try. Inside is a wealth of articles on style, fashion, being manly as well as some downright funny sh*t! In the latest issue, I came across an article on the world's riskiest flight. Being a pilot and an aviation enthusiast, yes my eyes light up at the sight of a plane, I voraciously devour any article in the mainstream media about airplanes. This article advances as its premise the idea that a commercial airline flight numbered "191" is doomed for disaster. The author cites as examples the following incidents: -in 1967, NASA flight # 191, a test flight which reached 266,000 feet suddenly inverted, descended at Mach 3.93 and broke into tiny pieces over California; -in 1972, Prinair flight # 191 veered left off the runway upon landing and struck a utility pole; -in 1979, American Airlines Flight #191 lost an engine, meaning it fell off, on takeoff and then crashed in Chicago; I remember this one and in the aviation industry we referred to the aircraft thereafter as the "death cruiser"; -in 1985, Delta Airlines Flight # 191 penetrated wind-shear while landing in a thunderstorm and crashed in Dallas; -in 2006, Comair Flight #191 took off down the wrong runway in Kentucky and crashed moments later. I would not consider myself to be a superstitious person but when planning travel or accepting a flight change, I'm going to hedge my bets and steer clear of any flight numbered "191." *** Anyway, back to the magazine....David Granger, the Editor in Chief does a fantastic job of presenting the range of men's fashion from the uber expensive to making recommendations for assembling a stylish wardrobe in a year for $5,000. The articles are always informative and there is enough variety in different sections to keep the readers laughing and entertained. At renewal time, I am a definite re- subscriber.

The Greenpoint Star is what I might call a fakepaper…read more It's a weekly, granted, but it shares some content with the Queens Ledger, Brooklyn Downtown Star, Glendale Register, Queens Examiner, and several other papers -- which means that each week's edition is a melange of neighborhood-specific news reporting and shared content. I've been getting the paper by subscription for free for ages because I responded to a photograph-identifying contest they held: What is this bit of graffiti? Tell us, and win six months for free. Six turned to 12 turned to however many, and I'm happy to still get it in my mailbox. Seriously! Despite my reservations, the Star is worthwhile for several reasons. It often breaks uber-local news before the Manhattan dailies. Its Brooklyn and Queens politcal analysis and commentary is spirited and spunky. And it has several outstanding features. The Christa Cuts column, penned by a young woman who seems to have recently moved further down Long Island, is full of attitude. The "Been Mugged Recently?" clip-out response form seems to yield few responses. And the "Back in the Day" offers a slice of historic life unparalleled by other area papers. I can understand how the Ledger/Star Newspaper Group wants to capitalize on interpaper synergy, but I can't help but feel that half of the paper isn't intended for me. That said, I still read it every week, and if you live in Greenpoint, I still recommend you pick it up. You'll make a better citizen and resident.

The weekly paper is particularly good at following the various immigration bills and what is happening in Congress on Irish affairs. The subscription rate is reasonable given all the timely information each week. I had to take away one star because the Green Card immigration "advice" column is not written by an attorney and makes lots of errors and gives out bad advice from time to time (of course, if you are not an attorney you don't know whether the advice is reliable or not!).
