I just finished a very disappointing phone call with your customer service department. I placed a…read moresubscription order on Sept 9, and I had called on Oct 29 because I still have not received any issue of Whole Living. The agent (who was not particularly friendly) that helped me said the earliest issue I could receive would be the December issue which would arrive in mid to late November, which would be more than 2 months after the initial order was placed. I told him that seemed like a very long time, and asked if he could send me any back issues before then. He said no, and that there was nothing that could be done to expedite the process. In this day and age, I find it hard to believe that the earliest they can fill an order is more than 8 weeks after it is placed, especially given that the magazine industry is hurting. As you know, many other mail-order services fill orders in 24-48 hours through US Mail and other services. In fact, I just ordered a subscription from Real Simple and got my first issue in less than two weeks. I have canceled my subscription, and don't plan to purchase any Martha Stewart products in the future as a result of this bad policy and poor customer service.

The Greenpoint Star is what I might call a fakepaper…read more It's a weekly, granted, but it shares some content with the Queens Ledger, Brooklyn Downtown Star, Glendale Register, Queens Examiner, and several other papers -- which means that each week's edition is a melange of neighborhood-specific news reporting and shared content. I've been getting the paper by subscription for free for ages because I responded to a photograph-identifying contest they held: What is this bit of graffiti? Tell us, and win six months for free. Six turned to 12 turned to however many, and I'm happy to still get it in my mailbox. Seriously! Despite my reservations, the Star is worthwhile for several reasons. It often breaks uber-local news before the Manhattan dailies. Its Brooklyn and Queens politcal analysis and commentary is spirited and spunky. And it has several outstanding features. The Christa Cuts column, penned by a young woman who seems to have recently moved further down Long Island, is full of attitude. The "Been Mugged Recently?" clip-out response form seems to yield few responses. And the "Back in the Day" offers a slice of historic life unparalleled by other area papers. I can understand how the Ledger/Star Newspaper Group wants to capitalize on interpaper synergy, but I can't help but feel that half of the paper isn't intended for me. That said, I still read it every week, and if you live in Greenpoint, I still recommend you pick it up. You'll make a better citizen and resident.

National Review is an American conservative editorial magazine, focusing on news and commentary pieces on political, social, and cultural affairs. The magazine was founded by the author William F. Buckley Jr. in 1955.

As the stridency contained within the small number of reviews here indicates, demagoguery from both…read moresides of the aisle is thriving in the US. Conservatives mock the mental acuity of progressives who in turn wish nothing but a short lifespan for those on the right that they disagree with. Cable news for their part has become an unapologetic bread and circuses echo chamber on both sides offering a safe haven for those never wishing to be troubled by any alternative perspective. In this environment, mainstream conservative magazine, The National Review is almost quaint in it's mission to fully articulate the "conservative" viewpoint with facts and rationale that requires no vitriol or finger pointing. Founder (and human thesaurus) William F. Buckley looked for reason over rancor in seeking the reasonable middle where consensus could be established -- a point-of-view that would now see his legacy all but expunged by the fire breathers on the Right and roundly dismissed as a privileged anachronism on the Left. As a result, these extreme times have not been kind to The National Review and their liberal counterpart,The New Republic where circulation has cratered as partisans on both sides seek out podcasts and YouTube talking heads who speak directly to their preconceived notions. And so it goes... five stars for the reasonable middle, if it even exists.

I had to take away one star because the Green Card immigration "advice" column is not written by an attorney and makes lots of errors and gives out bad advice from time to time (of course, if you are not an attorney you don't know whether the advice is reliable or not!).
