I was researching autism service dog trainers and came across Jeans business. I called and explained to her my situation and needs, she was busy at the time of my call, but advised me to call back again in 15 minutes so she could better assist me. I called her back and she gave me so much information on Autism service dogs for my daughter, tips and educated me on the subject. She is very knowledge and was patient explaining everything thoroughly and answering all my questions. She also named specific breeds that she felt were more adequate to my daughters needs. From our 15-20 minute talk you can tell she is very passionate about what she does, can't get better then that! I can see what she has the best reviews. I emailed the Service Dog Tutor Business to ask if there services were non profit/ free and I received an email from a "Jean Cary" stating that she is retired and does not know of anyone who could train my dog. I don't understand why she is listed as a dog trainer if she is retired. read more

My family has enjoyed working with Jean immensely. We actually talked to her before we got our dog to get her input on what breed she thought was right for us based on our particular family. We ended up having several breed suggestions along with pros and cons for each. We settled on a cavalier king charles spaniel and she has brought so much joy to our lives. That being said, our new puppy also brought the usual puppy challenges into our lives too at first. Jean created a well thought out series of sessions which included the basics but also let us customize each session by having her work with us on specific challenges. Additional reasons why I think she is phenomenal at dog training: * She really got to know us and our dog so that she could customize the training to get the most out of us both. * Various learning styles were incorporated (watching her, doing the activity yourself, having videos and articles provided to read and watch). We learned the "why" of behaviors which really helped us understand the techniques. * To help socialize our new puppy, she even brought over her lab and westie to play in the backyard and take walks with us. * We practiced walking on leash and using commands in many different settings at our home and parks to help our puppy get used to having activities happening all around her while still focusing on us. * Treats weren't the go-to method for all training. We did use tiny treats in the beginning but quickly learned about using a handheld clicker and how important praise is to raise a happy confident dog. * We continue to receive updates and interesting articles from Jean, including great places to take our dog. * She is very patient (with us and the dog). We asked all the questions we had and she was happy to guide us through the training process in a way that made each session very enjoyable. * We were able to book sessions in advance, but she was also understanding and flexible when we needed to change a date and/or time. * She included my eight year old in the training who was very cautious about interacting with the puppy initially. Our son and puppy are best friends now. I truly believe that Jean's kind style and her way of training has significantly shaped the dynamic and strong bond we share with our dog. Thanks Jean! Jean is such a special person. She has been training my puppy with me to be my service dog for mental health. This is a very different type of service animal to an animal that helps with physical disabilities. It requires a lot of patience and understanding that every mental health disability is different. Jean has infinite patience and understanding. She is constantly checking in to make sure we are training things that will give me the support I need, while also teaching me how to love in a world where my disability is not outwardly visible. Jean is awesome! We would give her 6 stars if we could. We found Jean while researching service dogs. Concerned with the cost to get a fully-trained service dog, we started exploring raising a puppy and doing the training ourselves/with the help of a private trainer. We had an introductory meeting with Jean where she provided ample information to help us in our decision on breed, temperament testing, etc. Once we found the right dog, we went to Jean for an initial 4-session series. We were unsure about our abilities to train a puppy. She quickly put our concerns at ease. During the first session, Jean was so easygoing and patient and provided easy-to-understand guidance on how to train our new puppy. We left feeling positive and eager to train. She truly set us in the right direction. Perhaps most remarkable is her patience with our children. Our 9-year old participated in the training sessions (while at times, our 5-year-old and 2-year old watched) and Jean was so accommodating and understanding. We learned some great training techniques and our older children are excited and willing participants in the training. Her post-session notes and informational materials on each topic are key as well. She even kindly accommodated our "emergency" potty training questions via email. We highly recommend her! read more

I contacted Jean Cary at the Service Dog Tutor in January of 2016 to explore the possibility of training my dog as a service dog. I spoke to her on the phone to see if we were a good fit and inquired about an initial session. She immediately informed me that I would need to pay her $600 in advance for 4 sessions. I thought that was odd because we haven't met yet, don't even know if my dog has the type of personality required of a working dog or if we are a good match. But I thought ok, her yelp reviews are great so lets try. I said I would be paying in cash and will pay her in full the first time we meet and agreed on a day the following week. Also, she's unwilling to meet on weekends or drive to your place like other trainers. A few days later, she called me back saying she has since picked up a couple more clients and that I will need to send her a check in order to reserve the appointment that we already set up and agreed to. In my mind, this was red flag number 2. I told her we already had an agreement and also that I don't write checks. She continued to insist and started asking very inappropriate and bizarre questions like "what you don't have money in your checking account?" Another red flag but I said ok, I'll give you a credit card number which she said she doesn't accept. Finally, very reluctantly I said I would send her a check which I did. At our first session she made me sign all these forms and waivers and I felt like I was buying a car or something. She seemed to know about dogs but I quickly learned that her training method is extremely rigid and non flexible. I got the impression that it was her way or no way. Her method is completely based on giving dogs treats to get them to do what you want them to do and thats not what I wanted. The other method is called "social reward" and takes a bit more work but engrains the behavior more deeply and creates more loyalty in the dog- my opinion. But I tried to be open minded so my wife and I went to the second session as well. But halfway thru, we were working on basic skills and I didn't quite understand something and asked her several questions. At one point her reaction to my question was "for the 5th time #####" I was taken back and shocked but just tried to absorb it. After going home and thinking about it, I put our sessions on hold and found another trainer. In fact, I read online that he was Jeans mentor at one point. He is wonderful and I will be reviewing him very soon. I subsequently sent her an email asking her to return 2 prepaid sessions because she verbally agreed she will if our team wasn't going to work. I have studied under Jean Cary. Her demeanour is complementary to my manner of learning, in that she is patient and has just the right amount of humor. Her timing is right on the money for both the human and canine student. I have been able to go from handling a juvenile dog that bolts at every opportunity to handling a dog with excellent recall, self regulation, and self descipline. He self corrects to the appropriate behaviour. He is a fine example of Jean's step by step methodology that was used to create a solid foundation for discipline. The training has oriented him into preparing for pet assisted therapy and service work. I could not be more pleased, or have more self confidence than after having studied with Jean. She is a natural teacher, and it is fun to be with her during the class. I endorse her completely!!! read more

Five stars for Jean! My little dog and I just completed our fourth training session. She was just great with him and immediately identified several effective techniques that improved my dog's behavior. She also explained aspects of canine communication that helped me modify my actions to more effectively train my dog. Jean came to my house to work on specific issues related to charging the door after the doorbell rang, which produced a significant improvement. We also had some fun leash-training sessions outdoors and she also provided very useful handouts and video links. I now feel more confident and knowledgable about going forward on my own. read more

If you are looking for a dog tutor, Jean is wonderful! Since Feb, Jean has been helping my family train our Wheaton Terrier (Nori) to be my daughter's service dog. Jean was recommended by a friend, and she met with my family even before we found our dog. She recommended breeds based on our specific needs, and I am so glad we followed her advice. We found a 3 year old "retired" show dog that is a perfect fit for our family. I couldn't be happier with the results so far. Jean has a way with dogs, and she really knows how they think. With Jean's help, our dog is picking up skills quickly and bonding with the whole family. She is also a very happy, social dog. Our goal is to have Nori ready to accompany my daughter to school next year. This will require Nori to walk calmly with my daughter in a crowd, sit and wait during classes, have manners with people and other dogs, exhibit impulse control and have an ability to focus on my daughter in the midst of distractions. We have made amazing progress. Each week, we tackle an area with different exercises in different environments (the yard, the park, a grocery store, a busy shopping area). We see what works for Nori and then our family practices for the rest of the week. With Jean's help, I think Nori will be heading to high school next year! read more

Jean Cary is MY Service Dog Tutor. I say that because she is essentially training me to train my dog during our weekly sessions. Jean gives simple verbal step-by- step instructions and practice while we are together. She follows up promptly with emailed articles, videos and written instructions for the training goals covered. Jean responds to my questions thoughtfully. She is very helpful when training issues or new unwanted behaviors crop up. My pup Frankie, is a 14 month old small breed, but together, we are personalizing and providing him the tools he'll need to assist me (e.g. waking me up when my alarm clock rings, retrieving dropped items, good manners so that he can be my mirror and comforter wherever I go). To these ends, Jean's curriculum supports our practice of behaviors in between training classes and our overall success. Frankie's behavioral improvements are noticeable and meaningful during the 3 months we have been working with Jean. Not only can I tell the difference but also my family and friends comment on Frankie's improvements as well! I am sure that Frankie will be able to pass his Canine Good Citizen test much sooner with Jean than without her. Part of Jean's philosophy is positive reinforcement and having fun which is reflected in her approach to me and my dog. This is important to me because I care about my dog and wouldn't want to use any technique that is less than kind. We are all having fun while doing the important work of training. I feel so lucky that I found Jean to help me train a service dog. I have always felt frustrated with dog training and hated doing it until I started working with her. Now it's fun! I own a very beautiful Aussie Minnie that is very young and energetic. She is beautifully colored and has a motherly intuition. (Yes it's a girl) We've had the pleasure of working with Jean in the hopes of making her a service dog and she has worked wonders on my pup. We are now a little past ten training sessions and the dog is picking things off the ground and handing them to me with ease. Socks, shoes, beanies, the newspaper, you get the idea. Jean is very professional and is a natural whisperer which comes easy because of her calm and assertive demeanor. In addition she is very thorough with end of training notes sent via email and always makes sure you have some homework to do. I have been training my golden with Jean for a few months now. I especially love her patience with both my dog AND me! I was very insecure and unsure of myself at the start of our training. Week by week I am gaining more confidence, which translates into being able to better help my dog. Jean sends a weekly update of what we covered and need to practice as well as many videos that reinforce the particular issues that we are working on.
