A fun thing to do in Gettysburg. My family loved it and we bought 2 antique photos . Best souvenir of out trip. Call the shop first as hours seem to be weird. A small shop in the tourist region of Gettysburg it blessedly does not sell tacky shot glasses and t-shirts but it does provide a far better reminder of your trip. If you're of a certain age you can remember getting old fashioned photos done and then having to wait around while it developed. In the 21st century Servant's is digital and the picture is done by the time you've changed your clothes. The staff is friendly and the cost more than fair. If I were going to offer a suggestion to make it better, I'd say have men's clothes that are not civil war uniforms. but otherwise. it is lots of fun and worth the visit. read more

My friends and I were in Gettysburg for less than a day; by coincidence we were passing through at the same time. One of the things we really wanted to do while there was get an old timey photo, and thankfully Servant's was able to make that happen on our tight and potentially inconvenient schedule! It's a fairly standard old time photo setup, which is awesome if you're someone like me who has family pictures from decades ago and remembers the old wooden bar sets fondly. The two employees were personable and friendly, and made a good effort to make sure our pictures came out right. The building itself is also pretty cool, being an actual home that played a part in the civil war battle that made the town famous. It's supposedly haunted as well, which is a cool element to add to the whole experience. Overall, I'd definitely recommend checking Servant's out! read more

Time is a flat circle. Today I awoke in 2016, thinking the date is an immutable fact, as I'm sure many of you do now. I rolled out of my memory foam mattress, laced up my rubber soled shoes, and threw on a sweatshop denim jacket. I scoffed at the packaging to my new underwear. "Breathable cotton" it read. Today we believe in progress for progress sake, faithful devotees to the church of modernity. And then there was Servant's. I molted my modern feathers, and draped myself in period-accurate silks and hats. In so much fabric, I never felt more perfectly naked, like the butterfly escaping it's cocoon. Of course, I knew it was but a thread in the tapestry of my otherwise sanitized life. But time is fleeting. Although a moment cannot be captured, it can be memorialized through lens of a master artist. They say a picture speaks a thousand words, but I say it's more like a river in winter: There is a lot going on beneath the surface. There are two options of settings available to you- as true in this studio as it is in life. Do you pose yourself as a saucy tart, perched atop the bar of a saloon--embracing your baser nature? Or do you sit mournfully beside the window, a chaste and dutiful wife, awaiting the end to this terrible war? Or are you both? Are not humans a complex creature, awash in dualities? Unfortunately you have to choose only one background for the photograph, but it's food for thought. read more

We went to Gettysburg on a Monday and one of the things I wanted to do with the family was to have taken an old-fashioned photo taken wearing Civil War era clothing. I saw several ads of one particular photographer and it said on the brochure that he was open every day so when I called the next day to arrange an appointment and found he was closed, I was very disappointed. It was a rainy Tuesday and I noticed a photographer next to Tipton Grill where we were having lunch, but he too was closed. I called him and he was willing to come in, but said he does not provide costumes. I then remembered seeing one or two photographers on Steinwehr Ave, so we went and found Servants Old Tyme Photos. He wasn't very busy and he had costumes for everyone. The owner was very personable and did his work very quickly. We ended up getting one in black and white and one in something called "old time" which is in between black and white and full color. Very reasonable prices. He doesn't advertise much, but we were all satisfied by the experience and the products. read more
