We had a group of ten, so I reached out to the museum (as on their site it recommends doing so for groups of ten or more). We were able to schedule a group tour and art activity for $5 per person! But we also would have been free to just visit the museum on our own. The museum is housed in a beach house that was actually moved to the current location from further up the coast. It is a beautiful building with a more modern add on that houses the offices and studios. There is a gorgeous sunporch with games and puzzles that you can enjoy while there. The museum always has two digital exhibits. When we were there it was two South Carolina artists with extremely different styles. One was batik and nature scenes that were full of beautiful color. The other was more modern/abstract and used some interesting layering techniques. The museum educator gave us great information about each artist along with information about some of the museum's permanent collections and history of the museum and building. When we were done with our tour, we were able to make our own batik designs which used white wax crayons and watercolor to design whatever we wanted. It was really fun to get creative in this beautiful space! Overall this is a lovely place to visit. The museum is free but they do accept donations. You won't spend a ton of time here, but it is a great place to spend an hour or so, especially on a rainy or cold day.

The series "Lateral Hazard" aspires to be a "playful and thought provoking" exhibition on MB's title of golf capital and our history with the military base. It was neither. The art itself was "meh" and the two artists expressed distain for both the military and golf without exploring beyond condemnation. The "thought provoking" was roughly at the level of "golf and the military power connection are bad, man" I'm a big fan of free speech, so they can say whatever they want. And I'm just a regular guy, not an art critic. Just expected either thoughtful discussion, or engaging art- got neither. Waste of time and space.

The new conservatory was open during our visit which houses an impressive orchid wall. It is quite beautiful! The zoo area has some otters and bird sanctuary, goats, alligators, horses and many more! I love how beautiful everything is. Even when you're at the zoo, you will still find touches of the garden and a few sculptures here and there.

I don't recall how many automobiles are on display, however there are several, closely arranged in four areas. The inside temperature was comfortable. The isle ways easily maneuvered through. Probably easy to get through with mobility issues. I didn't see any specific order of the displays. Not a Chevrolet or Chrysler specific area, however the owner favored Mopar products. Walking through should take around an hour. The collection included many muscle cars with excellent examples of factory "stock" race cars. Also some more obscure examples of little known cars. Several low production numbers cars. Unfortunately some of those low numbers cars were easily missed. You guide yourself. A tour guide would have been nice but I enjoyed my experience all the same. Overall a good experience. I'll probably return next year as they rotate other cars annually.

Beyond Van Gogh is an immersive art experience, offered through 9/22/24 at Broadway at the beach…read more The exhibit space was small, smaller than most immersive art experiences I have went to. You enter through a walkway which details some history of Van Gogh but nothing that seemed orderly enough to follow his history. It was not busy on the Friday evening we went with only a handful of people in attendance. There were three benches that seat two people throughout the room. There is open scheduling which is nice as you don't have to select a specific time to go. The immersive art once you get through the history of Van Gogh was 45 minutes in duration in one room. It was a bit confusing at first of when the start was and the end but I believe we walked in from the start of the show. There are some Voice overs in French I believe and some quotes that appear. The initial 10mins or so are lack luster but as the show progresses to the sunflowers, almond blossoms, and starry night, it is beautiful experience. The screens itself were low and in a small space so it was distracting to see the splits in the screen and ceiling.. other experiences I have been to have higher screens. The value of the experience is decent but would recommend looking for discounts prior to. Overall, it was an enjoyable experience. However, I cannot say the same about customer service. There is no direct person to reach and if you need to reach them, you get the run around. I purchased the tickets in advance to surprise my parents and I wish I had not. I do not have an issue with the non refundable policy but being you can exchange tickets and I missed the "cut off" because I did not know a flight would be delayed by 10am the day before, I lost a ticket. I called the 1800 number which told me to email the direct location. It took hours to get a response to which they told me to send a copy of email to show clix to proceed with exchanging tickets. I did not have a "copy" as I emailed showclix from the website contact support form. I then received no response at all just house before the close of the show. I went back to the main beyond Van Gogh and reached out to which she said she did not recall speaking with me. I noted I emailed the direct location and she said "let me check the email".-- why was I getting runaround like these are all different people when they can access these locations? She proceeded to regurgitate the policy of tickets not being exchangeable outside of 24 hours. What's the point of customer service to reiterate what you can read be responding to I individualized circumstances? Once we arrived, unable to bring the third person, I made the comment of trying to reschedule and the host at entry said nothing "enjoy the show". Seeing the place was completely empty it is absolutely ridiculous that the tickets couldn't be moved one day or at least have a credit for the 3rd ticket. I was planning on going, prepaid for tickets so I really don't understand. Word of advice-- don't purchase the tickets in advance.

They say it's an hour experience but it only takes about 30 minutes for the video to loop so that time assumes you read each of the quote boards in the hallway. They are mostly excerpts from his letters to his brother which don't tell you anything about who Van Gogh was as a person or as an artist. There are only a few scenes that even make use of the entire exhibit space well and the others just haphazardly throw images on the wall.

The building itself is 42,000 square feet and features a neat architectural design. Charles Gwathmey designed it so that natural light floods into the space, which is a really nice touch. CAM houses a beautiful permanent collection and frequently rotates its exhibits, so each visit offers something new. The first painting I saw during this visit was by Elliott Daingerfield, whom I was already familiar with from the Blowing Rock Art & History Museum. Female artists are also heavily displayed here, well above the national 11% average seen in most museums. Mary Cassatt, Minnie Evans, Maud Gatewood, Judy Chicago, Elizabeth Darrow, and Fritzi Huber are just a few of the prominent names I remember seeing. The Andy Warhol: Silver Clouds room installation was absolutely mesmerizing. I didn't expect to like it and almost didn't go inside. It seemed a bit weird with the large, pillow-like metallic balloons floating around, but once I was actually inside the room, I didn't want to leave. It was incredibly peaceful watching them float and move, and just standing there being gently tapped by them as they drifted was a truly unique experience. While I wasn't quite as crazy about the other exhibit, "Fresh Air" inflatable sculptures exhibition, they were large and made for a quick stop. But that is the beauty of art--some works deeply appeal to you, and others not so much. Outside the building, there are nature trails and a sculpture park to explore. The museum grounds are historically located where the Civil War Battle of Forks Road took place. There is a monument called "Boundless" by artist Stephen Hayes to honor the US Colored Troops who fought on this exact property. This installation sits just a few steps away from the parking lot, so make sure to check it out before you head inside or after your visit. The CAM Café is also located right inside the museum layout, as well as an excellent gallery gift shop with locally made items.

It was a great solo treat to see so many beautiful pieces, read, and learn. This is a two story experience with every changing exhibits. Currently you can see a few Monet pieces. I had no idea they would have Monet before visiting so this was a lovely surprise! In general the regular admission price is fair. The staff are incredibly friendly and the space is beautiful. It's also worth noting you are able to host weddings here.
