I went to this store for the first time and fell in love! So many beautiful pieces exported from different European countries. I bought a beautiful silk scarf, a dress and a pair of jeans. Although the sales tactics of the lady at the counter were a bit aggressive, when I told her I would just be taking the pieces I chose, she didn't continue pushing. She was very sweet and gave me a couple of pins as gifts. I attribute her way of selling to the different culture. I could see she wanted to be helpful and appreciated that. My family shopped at Serenity last week while on vacation to Seattle. The goods were interesting/unique, if perhaps a tad overpriced. The saleswoman/owner was extremely aggressive in her attempt to get the youngest to buy a product. She asked where we were from, and commented on how that was a wealthy area. Then, amazingly, she changed the subject to politics. 'Isn't it great that President Trump met with the North Korean president?' After no response, 'Oh, I can tell you are Democrats.' I'm not sure the hard sell badgering, and conjecturing on wealth or politics, is the way to go. read more

There's a shop just a few doors away with prices way too high. I walked out after finding gloves for $91. So I was skeptical of Serenity having exorbitant prices too. After passing the second time, I gave in & glad I did. Really cute winter weather hats, gloves & scarves, all for really good prices ($12-30). Some nice selections of jewelry too. The service was nice. She let me browse & wasn't pushy, I hate that. Bought an adorable knit hat to add to my collection. I'll have to remember to stop in for more reasonable boutique clothing & accessories the next time I'm in town. Small but worth a look. read more

Summary: Great selection of cute, unique accessories, but inspect all goods and buyer beware. Serenity does not conform to UCC law on refunding damaged items. First, the great; Serenity is a nice little shop in Gilman Village full of lovely accessories like hats, scarves, gloves, and purses - as well as some unique items like Turkish coffee servers. The prices are not jacked up insanely like in some other shops in Gilman village, and the variety is nice. Hand-beaded clutches, lush pashminas, and interesting jewelry are just a few of the things they have to offer. I've toured the shop a few times over the years, and the staff has usually been friendly, informative, and not 'pushy' - great for introverted accessory geeks like me. If you love accessories or want to get a non-generic accessory as a gift, then this is a good place to go. The not so great: I bought a lovely, unique pair of touch-screen gloves with a skeleton-leaf imprint design, but found a hole in it when I got home and tried them on. In the shop I had only tried on the right glove for fit, but once they were both on at home I could clearly see that the left thumb had a busted seam, leaving a hole around the size of a dime. I packed the gloves in a clear plastic bag with the receipt to take back a few days later. It wasn't so simple! There was no identical pair of gloves in the shop, and there was a different woman behind the counter that day. She refused to refund the gloves, and led me around the shop to try on a bunch of gloves to see if I would like a different pair. They were cute, but I wouldn't have bought any of them and I need to take my time with decisions - not easy with a waiting mother and baby wondering why her stroller ride has stalled. I insisted several times that 'No, if there is not the same pair here, then I really need to get a refund.' She kept refusing, and would instead lead me on to a new pair of gloves, 'how about these?' 'aren't these cute?' etc. That form of pushy sales coupled with a lack of awareness of the law is troubling. The really bad: In addition to not refunding the defective gloves, the woman (who I found out later was actually the owner) kept implying that a) the damage to the gloves was my fault and b) that the hole wasn't really a hole and not actual damage since it was along the seam. She would pepper her speech with comments to the nature of, 'maybe the gloves were too small and you tore them' (I informed her that I had tried the right glove on when I first considered purchasing them to ensure they were not too small, to safeguard against that exact problem), 'maybe you wore them for a while and they wore out' (I informed her I had noticed the hole immediately upon putting them on at home - and I had purchased them only a few days prior. I put them away in a bag after that.) 'Some people have kids or dogs that damage -' (I raised my eyebrows at this one and she tried to laugh it off. 'Not you, I mean, in general....'), 'we've been here eight years and never had a complaint.' (Perhaps she didn't mean it, but the tone of this comment really implied that I was in the wrong for daring to bring a complaint.) She also insisted several times that what I was referring to as a hole (the hole in the seam) wasn't truly a hole as only holes in the main body and not burst seams counted as holes. To add to this, she insisted that since it was not a hole in her view, it wasn't real damage since 'you can stitch it up,' and even mimed sewing the seam for me. (I sew 5+ hours a week, so I am very familiar with holes in seams that need stitching up - any gap in a finished garment that isn't meant to be there is a hole that needs repairing. And gloves are not that easy to repair given the extremely narrow seam allowance and the importance of durability. And unless goods are sold as-is, a customer shouldn't be expected to fix defects in a brand new product.) During the middle of this, I had to connect with my mother-in-law who was meeting us, and informed my mother-in-law which store we were in and that I had been held up as the store lady was not giving me a refund. The store-owner kept pestering me during the call, 'who are you talking to?' 'Why are you complaining about me?' Once my mother-in-law arrived, the store owner changed her tone a bit and offered to take a picture of the hole ('though it's not really a hole' she insisted again), send the picture to the manufacturer, and have the manufacturer send out a replacement. I would get a call within a week. I accepted for the sake of time and peace. I tried to privately reach out to the company through facebook, but the husband of the owner claims that it's up to the customer to ensure items are defect-free before sale, and seems to believe their 'no-returns' sign exempts them from the law. I stopped by this shop this summer with my daughter and a friend of mine. The owner/salesperson started following us around the store like we were there to steal, and at the same time, she kept pushing my daughter to ask me to buy her random useless stuff. At some point, she asked us what language we were speaking. I told her French. She said "I thought so but you don't look like you are from France or even sound like it." I found her comment highly offensive. So, I proceeded to tell her "Well, all three of us are French citizens, so, I don't I'm not sure where you're going with this." Of course I know where she was going with this: we are black! Her ignorant behind doesn't seem to know they not all French people are white. I take it that's why she was following us around the store as well. Lol. What she does not know is that I'm highly educated and can afford to buy her store on the spot and pay her salary! This is my second year buying gifts from this store, all very nice quality from Turkey. Last year I purchased scarves for my entire family, this year it's capes and shall's. With far to many people fighting cancer and kids fighting cancer within our gymnastics community, I bought good luck stones and raw cut moonstone earrings for friends and a little 7yr old gymnast who is fighting cancer in another state. They gave us free bracelets and good luck pins for all our gymnastics extended sports family, which meant more to me than everything I purchased.
