It was a nice, rustic accommodation that still had creature comforts like heat and a shower. It felt authentically Alaska in a way few other places in the state do. (so many feel like a TGI Fridays, where they just staple Alaska knickknacks to the walls and call it good. Impresses tourist, makes locals roll their eyes.) A few things to know: - The gravel road to get down into here is VERY steep, be careful! I imagine some vehicles might not be able to get out! - Gary, who runs the place is very kind. However, it can take days to get a place arranged. If you're trying to book last minute, don't bother. You also can't book online, you have to send a message through the website, or call.

This April was my third heliskiing trip to Alaska in what has become an annual tradition, and this…read morewas my second time with Black Ops (went with Points North out of Cordova in my first year - also a great operator). I did the 7-day package (and I extended one day since the weather was the best all season), and got 4 (spectacular!) days of heliskiing and 2 days sled skiing on our down days (super-fun as well). Robe Lake Lodge is in a beautiful location, and sitting in the hot tub at sunset with the frozen lake and the mountains as backdrop and with a cold beer in your hand and good company around you, comparing the lines you skied up on the mountains during the day is just an incredible experience that you will never forget. Everyone from the guides to the pilots to the ground/lodge staff to Josh and Tabatha themselves work so hard to make the experience for guests amazing. They did a great job of matching skiers/riders with those of similar levels (I actually ended up sharing a cabin, and skiing, with friends I made last year). The rooms are basic but totally adequate and comfortable (I slept so well every night), the main lodge is the heart & soul of the place and where breakfast and dinner are served and is also where the sauna and hot tub are. There are several smaller cabins dotted around the property (I stayed in the main lodge last year, in a separate cabin this year) and there is some walking (a few minutes max) required from the cabins to the main lodge but as long as you have the right footwear it is no big deal. The terrain in the Chugach is phenomenal, the best I have ever skied, and even on a day when I did not think we'd get the heli out, the Black Ops crew was able to find a "blue hole" in which we played all day long while other operators were grounded. On the best weather days pretty much the entire Chugach is your playground, and you get to ski some pretty gnarly, spicy, unique lines that you won't find anywhere else on this planet. Everything is done safely, but guides will absolutely push the limits if they believe the guests can handle it (this is why it is a good idea, if you are able to, to book the longer packages as that gives the guides time to evaluate your abilities and upgrade the terrain they'll expose you to). We skied/rode some pretty amazing lines on the final two days, I think I'll remember every turn until at least next season, when I plan to go again! Highly recommended.

We were still charged the full rate for Robe Lake lodge but stayed at the awful best western in town. This was the most poorly run operation I've ever experienced in all of my back country ski trips. Don't just take my word for it. Read the other reviews on poor management and bad safety. One of the Helios couldn't fly because of an accident. The skiing is epic! But that's after you wait in a parking lot with no information and constant delays due to bad preparation. They obviously can't control weather but the guests are left out in the cold. There are many other Heli options in Valdez. I would NEVER go back to black opps.

We fished the open ocean, outer Prince William Sound, and the inner Fjords, and caught Halibut, Ling Cod, Yellow Eye Rock Fish, Black Bass, Pink and Chum Salmon. We saw bears, seals, and seal otters. It's not only fishing. We got to kayak a glacial lake to the Sheridan Glacier, and walked the wonderful little town of Cordova. The next time we go back, we want to tackle some of the hiking adventures and open water kayaking. This is not a 5 star resort, The rooms while not too fancy were clean and comfortable. There are higher end rooms that face the sound, but we opted for the basic room, because it would be such a waste to just stay in the room. Food was really good and the staff super friendly. There are great place to eat in town as well. Boots and fishing equipment are supplied, but you will need your own rain gear. If you have your own hip boots or waders, I would recommend you bring yours, especially if you have unusual size. Another thing is rubber utility gloves to handle fish and protect your hands, and a multi tool to pull hooks would be helpful. If you are looking for a 5 star adventure, you really got to give Wendy & Steve try.

Everything about this experience delivered, and Steve, Wendy, and their entire team provided incredible service at a really reasonable price. If you're making this trip for fishing, you'll be happy. If you're making it for camaraderie, you'll be happy. We were making it for both and had a perfect experience, even in the middle of COVID madness. Highly recommend this trip for families, serious fishermen, or both.
