At the age of 16, Ken followed in his fathers and grandfathers footsteps by becoming a captain and vessel owner, purchasing his first commercial fishing vessel, the 42 foot F/V Sam-an-I. Two years later, just after graduating high school, Ken purchased another vessel, the 27 foot F/V Silver Mist. Ken then went on to earn his 100 ton masters license, and private pilots license in Anchorage, before returning home to Cordova. Fishing the Samani and Silver Mist went well and Ken soon decided to make an upgrade to a newer vessel, selling the Silver mist and purchasing the twin jet drive powered F/V Second Wind. This was a major upgrade and after a few more good fishing seasons, it was time to look at upgrading his larger vessel. Was afraid we might not see much wildlife but wow, there were so many opportunities from eagles (in trees and on icebergs), to adorable sea otters, whales, puffins, and sea lions. I easily took 200 photos! Every time something was spotted, the boat would slow or stop, and information about what we were seeing was explained. Of course, there was the star of the show - the Meares Glacier. We got very close to it and stayed there for a good 15-20 minutes. The boat has plenty of inside and outside seating and you are also welcome on the bridge. We were served a warm bagel with choice of cream cheese, butter, or peanut butter about an hour after departure. After leaving the glacier, we were served lunch. I'm a vegetarian so I brought my own sandwich but they were happy to offer just the veggies, rice, and roll without the chicken. Free coffee, tea, and water all day. Staff was friendly and approachable.

Great charter!…read more Andrew was very quiet, but a very good guide! We quickly got all our allotted Halibut, and then he immediately took us to areas to start looking for rockfish, which we also started catching. At the Halibut spot, we were catching Halibut and Cod almost as fast as we could lower our lines, there was very little waiting. I've never been on a charter quite like that! We were originally supposed to go way out into the bay but, couldn't due to weather. However, this charter was very communicative with us, and took us out for a shorter run in a different area. Only criticism is the weird fish processing process (lots of steps and handoffs, intensely manual), but this seems like it's more of a Valdez thing than a charter thing.

There were just four of us (two couples); once we were outfitted with waterproof boots, jacket, and suspenders, we had about a 15 minute drive to Valdez Lake. Logan gave us a choice of paddling to the base of the glacier which would have required longer paddling or to meander around the icebergs. We chose the latter and had so much fun! Logan said the icebergs shift every day, and because of that, it becomes a bit of a maze. We even had to backtrack when we hit a dead end. Logan shared information about the history of the glacier; it was interesting to learn that many of the icebergs were a result of a strong calving in 2020. Shout out as well to Sami who answered the phone when we inquired about two possible tours so we could decide which one would be best for us. She was also there when we checked in. Her friendly personality was a welcome greeting before we set off for our tour.
