He also offers a Saturday classes. Grandmaster Flaherty is so kind and helpful, and he is always adding new fun events and activities. He also offers an event called the FAST TRACK (its an intense training day). I feel safe leaving my son here - and he has grown more controlled and mature through his practice of Kenpo Karate. For new students there is nothing to lose, he will give you a free class, and NO contracts is also nice. I have seen students coming and going. I know its hard to please everybody but for us we give Flaherty's Kenpo Karate an A++.

They teach Shaolin Kempo & Shotokan Karate. The training includes physical exercise, strength training, and self defense. BUT- even more than the physical training is also a component of the program that I think really sets MMA apart from other karate classes. Emotionally strengthening components of the programs & classes including self control, accountability, courage, confidence, kindness, self respect, respect for others, and so much more!! The quote from Sensei Mark Cameron states that at Manteca Martial Arts they believe that: "A Goal is a Dream with a Deadline." To me the quote is a good example of the balance of physical & emotional teachings here.

Stan…read moreowns the place since he's a retired corrections officer, has a very real-world approach to martial arts. He teaches my "cane-fu" class, which is more like practical self-defense for older people (who might happen to have a cane handy.) He and his son and another sensei teach my daughter's kenpo class, where they do learn kata and forms, but they always make sure you know what the moves are a response to. In fact, that's Stan's first question almost every time: "why are you doing this?" Hard to believe this quality of martial arts instruction exists in small-town Galt.

I haven't been to his dojo in downtown Galt, but he used to have classes in his backyard(or garage on rainy days) which was quite the experience. I remember one day, trying to do a form while he distracted our eyes with a water hose...haha. He didn't do that often but he was always trying to find new ways to mix things up for us. I really appreciated how different it was compared to the usual karate place, where you can see yourself doing forms in the mirrored walls, he emphasized body control- knowing where your foot is(without looking) so that you don't screw up the technique for example. I don't know how his classes are currently, but I think he provided great real world tactical self defense back then and have no doubts that he's still a great teacher. I wish I had stuck with it longer than I did.

All the kids have a great time while in class and all the Black Belts seem very respectful and are great teachers to the lower belts. Don Rethage is great with the kids and can adapt his training style to meet your individual kid's needs. He always very personable with the parents and makes everyone feel welcome. As far as classes go, the students get a little bit of everything. After warm-ups, they'll do some bag work combinations, Light Sparring, Weapons Training (Staff, Sticks, Nunchucks, what I've seen so far)they'll work on their curriculum (Kata, Stances, etc)and sometimes he'll have the students work on some advanced stuff as well. The the students are great with each other as far as control and respect for one another. I keep reiterating this because my son in the youngest in the class and they don't treat him as he's a nuisance whenever they get partnered with him. So far the best thing about this place is in order for them to test for the next belt they have to get permission from the parents. The permission slip asks if they have been living the martial arts creed at home / school. Thus keeping them accountable for their actions off the mat in order to advance. We've held our student back and he's seen improvement in his off the mat activities. In closing we love being apart of the American Karate Ohana. At first we had a problem with its lax feel but after seeing the quality of students this place has produced, as far as genuinely good kids. We've come to appreciate it.
