Iron Dragon Tactical School Of Self Defense - Cane-Fu Classes

Iron Dragon Tactical School Of Self Defense

My daughter and I have both been taking here for about 6 months. The sensei are excellent. Stan…read moreowns the place since he's a retired corrections officer, has a very real-world approach to martial arts. He teaches my "cane-fu" class, which is more like practical self-defense for older people (who might happen to have a cane handy.) He and his son and another sensei teach my daughter's kenpo class, where they do learn kata and forms, but they always make sure you know what the moves are a response to. In fact, that's Stan's first question almost every time: "why are you doing this?" Hard to believe this quality of martial arts instruction exists in small-town Galt.

I used to train with stan back in high school, he's a great self defense instructor and his classes…read morecan also be a fantastic workout for those wanting to get in shape. I haven't been to his dojo in downtown Galt, but he used to have classes in his backyard(or garage on rainy days) which was quite the experience. I remember one day, trying to do a form while he distracted our eyes with a water hose...haha. He didn't do that often but he was always trying to find new ways to mix things up for us. I really appreciated how different it was compared to the usual karate place, where you can see yourself doing forms in the mirrored walls, he emphasized body control- knowing where your foot is(without looking) so that you don't screw up the technique for example. I don't know how his classes are currently, but I think he provided great real world tactical self defense back then and have no doubts that he's still a great teacher. I wish I had stuck with it longer than I did.

The constant fed back helps with confidence building as new moves are learned. It's only been a month, but my grandson watches the videos and practices almost everyday. I can see his enthusiasm and confidence growing.

I would steer very very clear from this place if you are black or brown. The owners are racist and…read moreare not afraid of showing favoritism towards their yt clients. Black or brown folks will be ignored during classes. Sad, because the owners themselves are POC but they have very close ties to maga folks. They also promote people very easily. As long as you're paying, the 'master' doesn't care. Everyone gets a belt promotion. ***UPDATE*** Yelp seems to be hiding my review about this place. Let me add more info since it's so weird for my review to just disappear like that. I had a niece and nephew attend this place for a few years. At first things were great, then the owners got greedy and changed the timeframe of the classes as well as the quantity of classes you could take. They lost a lot of students because of this but those that were loyal stayed. My brother and sister in law contemplated on leaving since the classes were shorter and were only twice a week now instead of three times a week with an additional half hour. Oh, not to mention, THE PRICE STAYED THE SAME WITH THIS CHANGE. So not only were you paying MORE but got LESS. My nephew was on the spectrum and my niece was not. The difference in how they were treated was not what I was expecting. I came to a great amount of their lessons to watch but after seeing how the school was ran, couldn't bring myself to support this place. Obviously the decision to keep them there was not up to me but I couldn't stand it. Seeing the little black and brown kids get very obvious low standard treatment compared tho their Caucasian and Asian counterparts were incredibly sad. They are not at all prepared or even educated enough to handle children on the spectrum. The 'master' has lost his patience many times and tries to play it off but it's very obvious to those sitting and watching. Again, I would urge all black and brown parents to take their kids elsewhere.
