After having the tattoo artist Brenden/Brando Art use the word "retard" in a causal tone like the word had no negative connotations, I came back for a touch up on a different tattoo not done by anyone at this shop. Brenden bad mouthed previous clients in detail while he tattooed me. He didn't say any names but it was clear that he found some joy in complaining about them. His language and lack of sensitivity is what made this review a four star review and not a five star review. The touch up was fairly easy and was done in less than thirty minutes (including making the stencil). This touch up was done by Adam, and I'm super happy with it. I'd gotten a couple tattoos by a former coworker who is now a full time tattoo artist. She didn't do them very well, but mostly because it wasn't the kind of tattoo that was her specialty. Regardless, Adam did an amazing job with my tattoo touch up. Definitely thinking about using him as my next tattoo artist should I find myself wanting another tattoo. Adam was excellent. While I've never done a couple hour tattoo session with him, I still liked his approach and bed side manner. read more

Yesterday, I got my first tattoo (I'm 44 years old). Not knowing how it normally works, I walked in to Sellwood Tattoo and was greeted by Nicole and her amazing, warm and sunny disposition. I looked through each of the artist's books and really liked what I saw from Derek. I reached out by email and got a same day response, even though it was his day off. We exchanged a couple emails and we scheduled a consultation to go over my design idea and understand a bit more of the process and what to expect. He answered all my questions and we reviewed designs a couple days later. Derek's design was spot on--and I can't understate the value of that. He listened, asked questions and made suggestions. What he came back with was exactly what I wanted and if it wasn't he was going to make sure it was. We scheduled a day a few weeks out and the rest is history. I had my first visit with Chantal today, and it was absolutely my best ever tattoo experience. I called earlier in the day hoping to get an appointment today, a rare feat in the Portland area, but she told me to come in after 5 tonight. So I did. I showed her my wish, and she didn't bat an eye. She had me email her the picture, and in a few minutes she had a drawing that I loved and so we got busy making me awesome. During the process, we laughed and talked like we had known each other before today. Honestly, she reminded me of my sister, so double awesome for me! When she was done, her work had far exceeded my idea, and I LOVE IT!! My friend and I are visiting from Arizona and we decided spur of the moment to get tattoos. We called and asked if they could take walk ins, and they could! We were told to ask for Derek. He was so friendly, helpful, and totally eased my fears of getting a tattoo! It was my first and he did an amazing job. It was small and dainty. He did my friends elegantly as well! It was wayyyy faster than I thought it would be! I hadn't eaten all day and a girl gave me some candy to ease myself. Just the whole staff was so friendly and made me feel so comforted when I was definitely out of my comfort zone. Definitely ask for Derek! She is the owner of the shop and you can tell she's put a lot of love and hard work into making the space look nice and not like a creepster's corner like all the other places up Mcloughlin. They do the "Friday the 13th" specials that you can upgrade. FYI, they've moved literally across the street from where they once were. read more

I had a vague idea of what I wanted and met with Chantel for a consultation. She took notes and made some doodles, paid a deposit and set a date. When I came in for my appointment I was amazed at what she had created for me, it was even better than I had hoped. She was personable, fun and professional. Choosing a tattoo artist can be a difficult process. After several months of reviewing artistsportfolios, I decided that Chantel's portfolio spoke to me. I wanted a custom design melding various elements, and from all accounts, custom pieces are Chantel's specialty. On October 17th (2017) I sent Chantel an email explaining that I wanted to get a custom piece designed, and would like more info on the process. I never got a response to that email. On January 28th (2018), I sent a follow up email; I received an automated response that included, "my response time may take a few days," so I waited, but when I hadn't heard anything after five days, I sent a third email. In this email I advised that I would be in town for a few days in February, and asked to schedule a consultation in person. Again I got the same automated response. On February 9th, I wrote my fourth email which said, "Can you PLEASE confirm receipt of this email and let me know why you haven't responded to me. Are you selecting not to take me on as a client? Or was it an oversight with my last three emails?" Again, I got an automated response, so I know the email went to the right email address, but I never got an actual response. In a last ditch effort, I called the shop on February 26th, and left a message requesting a call back or a response to one of my four emails. It is now March 3rd and I have not gotten any responses from my four emails or my voicemail. I am very disappointed that this shop does not treat customers better. My attempts to reach the shop for scheduling: --10/17/17 email --01/28/18 email (104 days later) --02/02/18 email (5 days later) --02/09/18 email (7 days later) --02/26/18 voicemail (17 days later) ***Update 03/17/18: Although I still have not gotten a response from anyone at the shop, the artist's brother-in-law responded to my review on Facebook stating that I shouldn't post a one star review for lack of communication because did I 'ever think she might not even be alive?' When I responded to his comment by indicating that her Instagram account shows that she is actively tattooing at this shop with access to the internet, my one star review was removed from Facebook (deleted 03/09/18). I WONDER HOW MANY OTHER REVIEWS THEY HAVE CENSORED. read more

While it's fresh in my head, I'll give a quick review to this shop I found completely by chance. So I wanted some text done for about a year, five words. Today ended up being The Day. I yelped for a place open Sat around 2p and that accepts cards. I called to see if I needed an appointment. I didn't, today. Told me to come in around 4. They called back and said 3 would be better so I headed up. The person who worked with me was Henry, who has a beautiful book of illustrations and a personality that's made for this work, "meeting people where they're at". All shapes and sizes were in the shop and I was always comfortable. He's an illustrator full time and has some beautiful animal drawings. If you love animals or bugs, he's your dude. I filled out a medical form. I was quoted a price for my piece. He looked at my picture and right away printed something up. His clean workstation was set up with clean instruments and good lighting as well as a fan. My arm was supported and I had some water from a cooler. We placed the piece and I had time to check it over. I had a clear idea of how I wanted it to look and the placement was clear in my mind. But I was also open to his expertise wrt size as to maintain integrity of the font over time (Times New Roman with serifs). This wasn't my first piece (and probably won't be the last either) but I appreciated him starting with a light touch. It probably took 20-30 min and I have another tattoo close by (another font, one word) and he offered to touch it up (different shop, five years ago or so). I thought that was really nice and I let him. We talked about basic things like vacations and Portland and work. He was easy to be around and kept me distracted enough from the buzzing. I was never in pain and this was probably the least painful tattoo I've had. But that may be time playing tricks on me. I was photographed (my piece) by him and myself before I was saran wrapped and left to retrieve cash. Cash is preferred depending on which artist you have. I'd go back here. I'd recommend the shop and Henry. It was easy to do without too much forethought. My piece looks great and the touch up was a really nice gesture. He also said their work is touch up included. So in a few years, if it does look gritty or blown out, I just might. Cool guy, cool shop, easy process. Thanks to the Yelp machine for making it happen. read more

I have a significant amount of tattoos, I've had work done in different countries and from different styles. The tattoo I got from Sellwood tattoo shop is an embarrassment. I asked for a very small simple black tattoo and the owner Chantel did the work for me. Well it looks horrible!!! from the first day I could see that the line work is shaky, she did not pack any black color inside the "all black tattoo" and half of the tattoo was gone in 4 days time. I won't even go back for a touch up because I doubt she would do a better job. Absolute crap !!!!!! read more

Got my tattoo from Emi and had an awesome experience! My tattoo looks beautiful, and she went the extra mile. She is kind, funny, and was genuinely interested in what I wanted from my tattoo. Before I even went in she responded very quickly to my emails and was receptive to questions. I have several tattoos from various artists but after several of my friends had given me recommendations for Brendo(n), an artist from Sellwood tattoo, I decided to go in with my sister and girlfriend (we all wanted separate tattoos). The tattoos I had seen from him on my friends had really impressed me, and now I can understand why. You can tell he loves what hes doing and Brendo was incredibly time efficient, caring, and took the time to draft up (and redraft!!) exactly what each of us wanted. Brendo had pinpointed our tattoos to match exactly what each of us had in mind. In fact, after he did my first tattoo, I decided to go ahead and get a second design he'd drawn that very same day, just because I loved it so much! He was so incredibly professional; it is evident to me that every tattoo he creates (no matter how small) is something he takes pride in, and appreciates attention to detail. His after care advice has also been phenomenal. It was my sister's first tattoo, and she had a few follow up questions the next day. Brendo responded to us immediately with sound advice. My husband and I get our work done by Derek at Sellwood Tattoo after following him from a few other shops. This location is the best location by far and away. The shop is very clean and Derek works in a somewhat private area. He always grasps the concepts that we are looking to achieve with our tattoos and often comes up with even better than we could have imagined designs. My husband has had lots of work done by Derek, and I've had a re-do of an older tattoo (which Derek make look as great as I'd always imagined it would) and several new tattoos. I came here for my first tattoo which ended up being a half sleeve. It being my first tattoo I was kind of nervous that I wouldn't clearly communicate what I wanted, but my tattoo is beautiful and completely exceeded my expectations! The shading in it is amazing, and it looks super dimensional, I love it! Chantel, the owner of the shop did my tattoo and I'm going back to her for all of my other tattoo work. I haven't been tattooed by the other artists there but I've seen their work and their clients are always really happy with their tattoos. Oh! And the place is so CLEAN! Which is awesome, no one wants to be poked with sharp objects for hours on end in a dirty, sketchy place. Between all of my tattoo sessions I have spent close to 24 hours in the shop and I really like the environment. I've gone to Sellwood Tattoo for a few different kinds of work. The shop is very clean, and comfortable. All the artists there are super chill and laid back not to mentioned talented. Chantel has always been very flexible withe regarding scheduling and I can ALWAYS get ahold her via phone or email. That's impressive being that it's her shop. She's completed cover up work on me, fixed/added to my existing tattoos and given me whole new pieces by themselves. Today I had a large older piece completely re-done and Im just beside myself and in awe, she went above and beyond what I expected to walk away with. My best friend and I went in today to get matching BFF tattoos (don't laugh) of something relatively small and simple. My friend emailed Chantel after seeing the great reviews online, and she got back to us almost immediately and held the communication needed to get everything situated and planned out. She told us to come on in at the end of the week before one of her prior appointments and she was awesome!! The shop is extremely clean, everything is hygienic and unwrapped in front of you, and all tattoo artists are very friendly and welcoming.
