I attended a pie fundraiser and silent auction a couple months ago at SEEDS that aimed to raise money for their youth development program, Durham Inner-City Gardeners (DIG). According to the website, "DIG empowers teens by teaching organic gardening, sound business practices, healthy food choices and food security values." Awesome, awesome, and more awesome in my book. I loved spending a couple hours exploring the two acres of land downtown that the DIG crew uses to grow a wide assortment of fruits, vegetables, and herbs. Teenagers actually lead the tours, and they are extremely knowledgeable! Not only do they grow the food, but they also sell it at the weekly Saturday Farmer's Market downtown. Then, due to fundraisers and auctions, the teens also receive a small stipend each month. So in a way, they get an early start on learning what it's like to have a job. I took way too many pictures here (it was spring, I was outside, couldn't help myself). If you're looking for a unique place to spend an afternoon, I really suggest taking a tour of the gardens. Also, if you like the basis of DIG and are interested in supporting them, check out the website - http://www.seedsnc.org/dig.htm. You can make a donation or volunteer.

We arrived and there was a live DJ playing Dancehall and Reggae, which had a great selection of music. There were tents and food trucks around the perimeter which had long lines and for good reason. There was good food and great merchants which my sister bought a shirt and I got a bucket hat with the Panamanian flag on it. My sister told me that there were a couple events being hosted in the coming weeks. I would definitely return when I go visit my sister.

Downtown Durham is cool and Durham Central Park is a big reason why. When I think of Durham Central…read morePark, I mainly think of The Pavilion and Foster Street, which hosts the Durham Farmers' Market (https://www.yelp.com/biz/durham-farmers-market-durham), and the adjacent public greenspace, playground, and skate park located between Foster Street and Rigsbee Avenue. However, Durham Central Park extends well beyond that. It's really a neighborhood, encompassing some of the coolest spots in the city. Aside from the aforementioned farmers' market, highlights at Central Park for me have included: * Boxcar Bar & Arcade: https://www.yelp.com/biz/boxcar-bar-arcade-durham * Durham Food Hall: https://www.yelp.com/biz/durham-food-hall-durham * Foster Street Coffee: https://www.yelp.com/biz/foster-street-coffee-durham Additionally, my wife and her co-residents are big fans of: * The Glass Jug (bar): https://www.yelp.com/biz/the-glass-jug-durham-3 There's also a lot of great stuff around Central Park like: * M Sushi: https://www.yelp.com/biz/m-sushi-durham * Pizzeria Toro: https://www.yelp.com/biz/pizzeria-toro-durham * The Blue Note Grill (barbecue and live music): https://www.yelp.com/biz/the-blue-note-grill-durham-2 * The Parlour (ice cream): https://www.yelp.com/biz/the-parlour-durham-2 * Viceroy (Indian restaurant): https://www.yelp.com/biz/viceroy-durham My wife likes to get her hair cut and styled at: * Rock Paper Scissors Salon: https://www.yelp.com/biz/rock-paper-scissors-salon-and-gallery-durham-2 The neighborhood also includes the DAP (Durham Athletic Park), former home of the Minor League Durham Bulls baseball team. According to artwork on the south side of the Liberty Warehouse Apartments, Durham Central Park was established in 2001. The Pavilion opened in 2007. There's lots of amazing public art in the neighborhood too. The municipal space is ideal for events like the farmers' market, festivals, live entertainment, food trucks, etc. It's perfect for the community.

This park is over 300 acres and includes walking trails, community gardens, playgrounds, picnic shelters and classrooms. I could not wait to go to this park as soon as it opened as it is only 5 minutes from my house. This area of Wake County is limited on safe walking trails and Beech Bluff has solved this problem. There are six walking trails in total - 3 that are ADA accessible and 4 that are natural surface trails. Each trail is a half-mile long or shorter. I have walked almost every trail and I really like them. They will be shaded during the summer and are wide enough throughout that no one has to stop to pass by other groups. Now for the playground. There is an area with four swings - two regular swings and two adaptive swings, a tall playground with two very long slides, and a smaller play area meant for toddlers. There is also a rock climbing wall. There is seating around for parents and a good amount of space between the two playgrounds. This area is not very shaded; I can imagine the equipment getting very hot and it being uncomfortable for parents to sit and watch their kids in July and August. There is a shelter near the toddler playground, but it doesn't have a good viewpoint of the larger playground. I have two kids (2 and 4) and my 4 year old was very interested in the larger playground, but my younger child was not. For me, it was very difficult to monitor both children with how the playground is laid out. With lots of kids on the larger playground, it is challenging to keep an eye on your child as they climb up the levels. I walked by the community garden and classroom but haven't utilized them yet. There are also shelters near the two large parking lots. I have a few thoughts on improvements, but none of them would keep me from coming to this park weekly. Things that I think can be improved: * Signage on the walking trail trailheads that state the length of the trails * More swings in the playground area. There are no baby swings currently.
