I'm an alumna of the Fund, and I have nothing but GREAT things to say…read more When I was a high school honors student whose father has just passed from cancer, my counselor told me about the Fulfillment Fund. At that time, I thought the program was a scholarship program with a lot of nice adults, who turned out to be what I would later title "mentors." In the early stages of the program, I enjoyed bi-annual backyard bar-b-ques at Fulfillment Fund Founder Dr. Gary Gitnick's house, weekly mentoring conversations with Fulfillment Fund Program Manager Todd Mandel, and frequent exposure to cultural events, where I had the opportunity to interact with other Fulfillment Fund scholars. The program was not as robust as it is now, with a Mentor Program, a high school program, collegiate internships, etc. At that time, it was just mingling with the staff and a one-year scholarship. Fast forward past college graduation into my career. I somehow got reassociated with the Fund. I became an official mentor and rediscovered all the wonders youth go through when being exposed to the world. I was able to mentor two youth at the same time, from 9th grade through both of them receiving their AA degrees. One was chosen to be with me in the 9th grade, after an EXTENSIVE review of my worthiness (WHAT?--no j/k, I know it's for safety purposes for the children.); the other had her mentor give up on her in 10th grade. Both young ladies lived in Watts and were from broken homes. But I believe EVERY child deserves a chance. Thus, I took her under my wing as well. I didn't realize I had SO much left to give until I started to invite these two young ladies into my world. To keep this short, we bonded and I discovered how much I could grow by simply sharing my blessings with those less fortunate and willing to explore the world through you. I VERY MUCH recommend supporting this program, as they're all about the kids. Our future. Our present. It's all about the kids.

So I've been volunteering as a mentor for Project Motivate (PM) for almost a year and I'm so glad I…read morefound them through VolunteerMatch! Project Motivate is the first Vietnamese-American mentoring program of its kind . You are paired up with a Vietnamese youth (of the same gender for the school year) and the program has a set schedule of meeting every Wednesday night from 6pm-9pm (that was the schedule for this year) where mentor and mentee all meet in a classroom . I drive every Wednesday evening from my house in LA to Huntington Beach to tutor my mentee. Because that's how I strongly I believe in what they do. My mentee is such a sweetheart, she's very inquisitive and loves to read as much as I do. So naturally we connect immediately. Even though when she first joined the program she was very very shy and refuses to even make direct eye contact when talking - seeing how she had grown in the past year to finding her own voice and gradually being comfortable in her own skin has been extremely rewarding for me. Naturally, being a mentor is something that one has to not only want to do but also has to have the time for , I'm blessed that I'm at a point in my life now where I can give back in this way. To give you an idea of who the other mentors are in the program with me this year: there are couple attorneys, a couple bio-engineers, a couple of social workers, a research analyst, a couple film makers , and a handful of college students who have all come together to volunteer our time once a week. The program also arranges activities for mentors and mentees to do on one Saturday every month. By the way this may sound funny, but please don't feel like you have to be Vietnamese (or even Asian) to be a part of this organization we have volunteers in the program who aren't! Your rate will not change based on the number of children in your care either. You could be working more than 40 hours a week with a family and not receive any benefits because their employees are hired as "on-call" sitters, even if you have a consistent booking. They only care about enriching themselves and using you as a pawn to do so.
