0 stars for service due to Lindsey. We went out for dinner on February 13 and had a very disappointing experience. Although it was busy, we were patient. We waited 20 minutes just to get water after being seated and were never given utensils. Throughout the night, we had no water half the time. Our server, Lindsey, never came to our table unless we flagged her down or her coworker literally had to "go find her." Multiple tables that sat after us were served and left before us, yet we were there for nearly two hours. One of the bills did include a 10% tip, so she was not completely stiffed. I tip well and honestly--never have I left a bill untipped, and it would have been well deserved--but Lindsey's poor service and disgusting attitude made it impossible. When she saw my untipped bill, she rolled her eyes at the table and walked away without saying anything--no "thank you" or "have a good night" to my friends who did tip. She then stopped us on the way out, blocked our path, questioned the tip, and became argumentative. Trying to shame customers for not leaving a "good enough" tip in front of other customers is completely unprofessional and unacceptable. To Lindsey: when a table has to wave you down and it still takes you 10 minutes, then you disappear for another 20, you won't get a tip--and it should NEVER be expected of anyone, especially with such a poor attitude as yours. I hate to say it but I am GLAD I didn't tip especially when you stopped us, I couldn't help but chuckle due to the audacity. Your service was unprofessional, and your attitude was disgusting. I've been going to this establishment for a while with no issues, even last week when it was busy, and the servers were attentive and kind. Friends recommended this as a place to try when we met for dinner and it did not disappoint! Those loaded fries - absolutely fantastic! Is that beer cheese drizzled over them with nice big pieces of real bacon?! That set the stage for a great meal to follow - soup (more beer cheese) and salad (because I'm trying) and a really great IPA. Our service was great; she was friendly and attentive and always appreciate being offered a sample of beer when I can't make up my mind! This is a pretty big place with a large back area - looks like it might be fun for the college crowd on the weekends? Quite family friendly though during the dinner hour on a Saturday! I ate here a few times when I was in college and the food was way better 8 years ago then it is today. I cannot believe I spent over $25.00 with a tip on one beer and frozen cheese curds in whitewater, it's cheaper in Milwaukee and Madison. The service was good, so I cannot complain about that. Stopped in with a friend for a beer and some appetizers, and we weren't disappointed! It was my first time in downtown Whitewater, and it's a cute area. Second Salem was very empty when we arrived, and remained that way pretty much the whole time we were there. My guess is that students are gone now, but it was surprisingly a ghost town during Memorial Day weekend. My friend and I both opted for the Old Main Golden Ale on tap, and it was very tasty! This beer has a smooth, hoppy taste with a finish of white wine and flowery notes. For appetizers, we ordered the cheese curds and Bavarian pretzel. The cheese curds were AMAZING! I love that it was very lightly fried, so you get more of a mouthful of cheese than breading. The ranch tasted homemade, and I LOVE homemade ranch. The pretzel almost seemed deep friend, although that isn't a complaint from me! It was accompanied by mustard and beer cheese, and the mustard was very flavorful - the beer cheese, not so much. We thought any place featuring a Witch motif would be able to offer vegan/vegetarian fare...why those two go together, I don't know. I don't think witches are noted for eating vegan, but I believe Wiccans are generally understanding, compassionate people so we took a chance. Superb Hummus Platter! In fact, I'd go as far as saying it was the best Hummus Platter I've ever seen. Not just a small bowl of hummus with pita slices around it. A HUGE plate of hummus with an even larger plate of assorted marinated veggies for dipping. Then they had Beyond Burgers on the menu...um...YES! The burgers come with lettuce, tomato and avocado, but no ketchup or mustard or pickle. Fries were good. Our lone vegetarian ordered the Margherita Flatbread and it was quite large, definitely meant for sharing amongst 2 or more people and he said it was super duper good. But it had cheese on it, so he had to eat the whole thing. And he did. My salad had the best balsamic dressing I've ever had because it wasn't sweet. I hate sweet dressings, and this was perfect. It was a giant salad and I cleaned that plate. One of us ordered the brussels sprouts and she said they were delicious. Beers were good too. The glasses had their cool witch logo on it, and one in our group left with a t-shirt from the place. The only knock I have against this place is that their tables are made with pipes that are placed at just the right position for you to bang your knees into as you sit down. Our waitress was vegan! After dropping my friend off at the Wisconsin Sheep and Wool Festival in Jefferson, I explored some of the surrounding region. This of course led me to Second Salem Brewing Company in the small town of Whitewater. There's not much atmosphere here to wow you (which I found kind of disappointing given the town's history) but they are creative with the beer names. I was impressed with the variety of beers available from Second Salem (a one barrel nanobrewery) so I had to go with a flight of it all. This included Old Main Golden Ale, Project Terrior, Wild Man Hefe, Beast of Bray Road Amber Ale, Coffee Porter, Nitro Black Mass Stout and Phone 90 Imperial IPA. I savored the rainbow of flavors and couldn't even pick a favorite. I started looking at the food menu once I realized how much beer I was drinking. The choice was made as soon as I read the description of the Wisconsin Burger. It's a burger topped with bacon, onion ring, cheese curds and cheese sauce. And it goes great with those beers. My only criticism would be that the décor could use some more hometown pride/embracing of the whole Second Salem label. I mean, even I embraced it with the purchase of a brewery t-shirt. read more

I came to Whitewater this past weekend for a graduation ceremony. We arrived early so we decided to stop in here for a bite eat. We came in the back door and found our way to the host/hostess station where we were promptly greeted and offered our choice of a table inside or outside. We chose outside. They have a large patio overlooking some water (and also the railroad tracks), but there were no coverings or umbrellas to shade the table. The hostess brought us water almost immediately. I thought we were off to a great start because I had read some other reviews first about slow service and awkward servers (and spooky stories about the restaurant's history). Then our actual waitress came to the table. She was extremely friendly, albeit somewhat awkward, and asked us about ordering drinks. My boyfriend and father ordered some beers: the Old Main and the Trash Panda brews. She brought them back rather quickly but then didn't return to take our food orders for quite a while. Once she finally did, I ordered the Warhawk Deluxe burger, my boyfriend had the Wisconsin Burger, and my dad had the Second Salem Fish Fry. The waitress didn't offer my dad a choice of a side so he asked since the menu said it would include his choice of a soup or salad. She told him she wasn't sure, as it was her first day on the job, but promised she would check into it. At this point we decided to give her a break about the slowness and awkwardness since it was only her first day, but after waiting for the food for quite some time, and having nothing to block the sun, I started worrying about sunburn (you wouldn't believe how easy my fair skin burns), and there were ants everywhere, so we asked if we could move inside and they were very accommodating. Also while we were waiting, I stepped away for a bathroom break and while in the ladies' room, I became convinced the place was bewitched. First of all, it was extremely dark in the bathroom which didn't help. But then the toilet started acting possessed and I remembered the other spooky reviews and every scene from every scary movie I have ever watched appeared in my head. I literally ran out without drying my hands. The guys thought I was crazy because apparently the men's room was well-lit and normal but I wasn't too convinced. They also have a lot of horror-esque paintings all over the interior of the restaurant which isn't very pleasant. Anyway, once our food finally came out, I put in an order for a Crispin Pear cider and my dad didn't receive his side of soup so he asked her for that. She brought the soup back within a couple minutes but forgot the cider, apologizing and promising to return with it soon. The food was good. Really big, tasty burgers and the chips that came with it were well seasoned. My boyfriend liked the Wisconsin Burger. The cheese soup that came on it wasn't drippy and messy; it was pretty thick and they served it sparingly. Also, the cheese curds that came on it weren't deep fried or breaded as we had predicted, but he said it worked well. It sounded like my dad enjoyed the fish fry and his cheese soup as well. I stole one of his fries which wasn't overly flavorful but had a nice crispy texture. Our waitress finally brought my cider once I had almost finished eating, at which point I didn't really want it anymore, but it ended up being a refreshing ending to the meal. And since it took almost 20 minutes to get the check taken care of, I felt like I had plenty of time to finish it. In the end, we sat there well over 90 minutes from start to finish. Long story short: if you're looking for a quick bite to eat, I wouldn't recommend it. However, if you aren't scared of witches haunting the bathrooms, and you have two hours to spare, then go ahead and give it a shot. Happened to be passing thru Whitewater when stumbled across this Brewery. We are glad we stopped. It was Monday a little after lunch time and they were not that busy which was ok with us. We decided to try all there beers by tasting them in flights. Glad they do flights so anyone can try them. Also I was happy to find out that they make all their beers in house. I would say that they were all pretty tasty. When we walked in and got seated we were greeted with a smile and asked what sounded good to drink. Our waitress was very friendly. We orderd our daughter the homemade Mac-n-Cheese, Mom ordered the Mozzerella sticks homemade, and I had a basket of wings with lots of sauces! It was all pretty tasty and good size portions. I really enjoyed the Blue Cheese and the Bourbon BBQ. Food seemed to come out of the kitchen fairly fast. The inside of the restuarant was clean, which is always something we look for. They had some interesting graphics and pictures up on the walls that tell a story behind the names of the beer and the town's history. I thought that was very cool! The bathrooms were clean and tidy. It was a pretty big place split into a few sections, maybe for parties or weekend entertainment?
