I'm astonished that this place receives positive reviews. I haven't posted reviews on yelp for some time but felt I had to do so after a horrible evening at this restaurant. As we arrived for our 8 pm reservation, we were told that the degustation menu had ended at 8 (no notice anywhere on the website). However, we were told there was a menu for their "most popular" items where a customer could choose 2 or 3 courses at a slightly discounted rate. When one of us tried to do so, we were told that the entire table had to buy into this discounted menu (unlike a tasting menu, this menu offered choices for starter, main course and desert so theoretically each of us could have chosen a completely different meal so there was no logic whatsoever in forcing everyone to use the "favourites" menu (especially when 2 of the 3 of us wanted the lamb dish that didn't appear on the "favourites" (might this be because the lamb was far more expensive?). We had to insist not once but twice that this policy was grounded in no logic. Certain items were excellent (like the raw oysters and the wine) but, once the kitchen was involved, the food was, at best, mediocre. Our main server was lovely. A second server who took over while our server was searching for the wine order (it arrived far too late when the food was cold), threw food on the table without even explaining what it was and had her back to us leaving the table before the plates stopped clattering. At the end, we were told there would be a 3.25% (approximately) fee for using an Amex card while a lower fee would apply to other cards. When my son, politely, explained that charging more for Amex was in contravention of a recent law case in Australia, the "manager" looking after us, rudely told us he had obtained legal advice that the case didn't apply to him and if we had a problem "go to mantra.com and register your complaint" as he turned and walked away. Apparently this restaurant is pooling its employees with the hotel which it serves, resulting in 50 employees, thereby avoiding the new law. It was a horrendous evening and we will be advising the people who stay in our vacation home to avoid it at all costs. read more
