Patisserie by PPX Events - Nutella brownies

The pastries here are on par with some of NYC's best. We couldn't quite do a side-by-side…read morecomparison of plain croissants with our NYC favorites, since only almond and ham + cheese croissants were available -- and I suspect that island humidity makes it nigh near impossible to offer that perfectly crisp-tender, layered product for more than five minutes out of the oven. But... what we tried two days in a row were utterly gorgeous, beautifully risen, beautifully layered, redolent with butter, generously stuffed with fillings. The ham and cheese version had a touch of Dijon mustard, I believe, with a light sprinkle of sea salt atop (possibly flavored, but it was hard to tell from the smidgen I was able to wrest from my children). Almond croissant came generously filled with a lovely and not overly heavy marzipan based filling. The lemon meringue cruffin we sampled was perfect in texture, a decadent brunch treat that fueled a lot of ambling around town with friends and a few hours at the beach on top of that. Despite our wet napkin attacks, bits of that meringue decorated the children's faces for hours. The cheesecakes -- delicately bejeweled with edible violets and fruit -- deserve a call-out for their extravagant beauty. If we'd had hands free + reasonably quick access to a fridge after purchase on either day, I'd have walked away with one. Or three. Whoever the baker(s) is/are here mean(s) serious business. I can throw together reasonably edible cookies, brownies, and tarts. But the croissant + laminated pastry making classes I took at the French Culinary Institute (now International Culinary Institute) once upon a time leave me in no doubt that I lack the patience or skill to make these kinds of things -- and I live in awe of those who do, and do it so beautifully. I understand that PPX Events is primarily a catering company. How lucky we are that this side of the operation is available to the average Jane pedestrian as well! P.S. The counterperson who was there on both Saturday and Sunday was awfully nice.

There's a place to park, I can walk in, order a fried fish sandwich, look at some lobsters in a tank for ten minutes (the best part) and be out the door with a hot n ready fried fish sandwich in my hands. On my last visit, the woman at the counter was so happy. I was already happy because I was getting a fried fish sandwich. And then I was feeding off of her energy, and I was just having such a great moment in Sayle's Seafood! Now, I could sit in and eat here and bask in their fishy glory since there are tables, but I have yet to do so. I also love the view of the harbor from the front porch and that it's tucked down that little street and the vibe is so island that it contributes to the over-romanticism of Nantucket that happens in my mind but that's okay. The fish sandwich was really good. The time before that, I ordered the clam strips side, which was a lot smaller than I believed it was going to be. They were small individual pieces and fried well-done, while I do prefer a softer crunch. Next time, I will order the clam strip platter which comes with accoutrements. I also had their clam chowder, which I also thought was pretty good. I will be back for more seafood, and I hope that it is soon!

We sat on the deck, and the staff was so sweet--they literally took the lobster straight from the tank to the back to steam it. They even cracked it for us! The restaurant was pretty chill around 9:30pm, even though it is centrally located near the HyLine Ferry port. We saw the evening ferry come in, and had a front row seat to the taxi and luggage chaos outside while we sipped Diet Pepsi and root beer in air conditioning. So nice. The bartender, Chris, was knowledgeable about the menu (thank you for steering us away from the five meat and sides platter- our eyes were surely bigger than our stomachs!) and onto the Selfie, which was two meats and two sides with bread. It was actually perfect to share for a light dinner, and we left happy and full. My boyfriend opted for the Mac n' Cheese (actually very flavorful, and I loved the homemade-tasting pasta!) and the Burnt Ends (sauce was sweet and sticky goodness), and I had the Cornbread (kinda dry but still yummy), and THE BEST FRIED CHICKEN I HAVE EVER HAD. Let me TELL YOU. I have very low expectations for chicken and rarely order it when out for dinner. Too often I've been lead astray by dry and flavorless bird entrees, and it ends up being a waste of time and money. However, after a long day of walking around Nantucket, I was starving and only fried chicken would do. This was truly S-Tier. Flavorful, moist, and cronchy- I almost both ordered another serving AND risked missing the ferry the next day to go back and get more. It's truly that good. BACK Yard Barbecue is yes, a New England BBQ restaurant, however, this is arguably some of the greatest fried chicken I've had in a long time. Coupled with the friendly service and relaxed atmosphere, you can't go wrong for pre-or-post ferry noshing!
