US 95 and Nevada Route 164 are the crossroads of the Town of Searchlight. Standing on the northeast corner is the Searchlight Nugget. The Searchlight Nugget is an old school casino that isn't really that old. The Doing family built the casino in 1979. Since that time it has been a stop for people traveling between Las Vegas and destinations that include Cottonwood Cove and Laughlin. It has been a place to stop and not sleep. The Searchlight Nugget is a small building with a large restaurant, casino with primarily slots, gift shop, and a bar. After a few hours of relaxation and recreation in Cottonwood Cove (14 miles east), I was up for a cup of coffee as I approached the crossroads of Searchlight. Regardless that I wasn't too hungry, I figured over a cup of coffee that I'd check out the menu. Maybe I'd get dessert. US 95 in rural Searchlight is a different ribbon of concrete than in Las Vegas. Contrary to the hyper busy freeway it travels on at the Spaghetti Bowl in downtown Las Vegas, an hour south it is a rural two lane roadway regulating traffic with a strictly enforced 25 M. P. H. speed limit. Just like the section of highway it sits off of, the Searchlight Nugget is an open space without crowds. This is the casino I walked into. On Super Bowl Sunday, the small surface parking lot was mostly empty. The first thing that caught my attention were the signs saying that the Searchlight is not responsible for something happening to your car. That causes me to ponder if there has been breakins here. The second thing that caught my attention is this mutant size chair inside that looks like it was made for Big Foot. From the entrance I saw everything. In back of the small casino stood the bar. On Super Bowl Sunday it was lifeless. I headed to the restaurant on the right for a cup of coffee. Searchlight Casino's gimick is their 10 cents coffee. I didn't really care about the price. I'm a Starbuck's regular. I cared about the taste. In this large restaurant absent of patrons, I made my way to the counter. I'd share it with one other person. I'd pass over the food and a beer. Upon a glance at the menu, I observed some decent food specials including spaghetti and meatballs for $8.99. I just wasn't hungry. I'd pass over a beer because I was on the approaching tired side. I didn't want to drive buzzed and do something foolish like drive 27 M.P.H. in a 25 M.P.H. speed zone. Do you remember the show Alice with Mel's Diner? I expected a Mel's Diner style greasy spoon with service issues. That was only an expectation. The server at the counter was pleasant and persistent with coffee refills poured in a clean up. I expected decent coffee. The coffee was the decent diner coffee that I have been accustomed to in the days before Starbuck's came into my life. This coffee was inferior to the coffee house chains at the same time it was superior to the coffee that Village Pub recently served me. It was a decent tasting caffeine boost that kept me wide awake for the miles of desert ahead. Now that I gave my 10 cents worth about the Searchlight Nugget, there is something that I ought to mention. The owner is looking to sell the Searchlight Nugget with numerous properties in Searchlight. It will be interesting to see the development in the future or demise of the Searchlight Nugget. read more

I came to this place for work, not because Im addicted to gambling, haha. I will first off have to say that being a vegetarian in a place like rural Nevada can be challenging in it's self. There was literally nothing on the menu that could be considered vegetarian unless you ordered a number of sides such as french fries, onions rings, and a salad. The salad is of course iceberg lettuce with a couple of rings of raw onion and maybe a slice of cucumber in it. Their side of fruit is all canned fruit floating in syrup (even the cherries were candied cocktail cherries), and their side of vegetables was canned as well and low in variety. Everyone who wasnt vegetarian seemed to enjoy their meals however, pretty much everyone else ordered the ribs which were on special. The one thing I did really like about the place (oddly enough) was the fact that they allowed smoking inside and the combination of that with the jingling sound of the slot machines reminded me of being a kid in the 80s going to places like Showbiz Pizza where the parents would all drink pitchers of beer at the tables and smoke while us kids ran around and played all the arcade games. On the way from Vegas to Laughlin, Searchlight is pretty much the only thing around during the long monotonous drive. This little joint makes a nice break for breakfast to break up the drive. The Nugget is an old casino and it looks it. It's small, with a few rows of machines, a little restaurant, and a bar. There's a also a random giant armchair. Why are you there giant armchair?! I need to know! The machines don't pay out cash or the little tickets. You've gotta wait for an attendant to show up with the cash, whether you won $5 or $500. It's a bit annoying, I'd assume for the attendants too. The food is nothing to get real excited about either, nor is the service. We sat ourselves, but noticed the table was a bit sticky and dirty so changed seats as the server brought out our drinks. We mentioned that we were ready to order as she set down the drinks and walked away growling about not taking orders. Ooooook lol We came for breakfast and all ordered their Deuces Wild with french toast, bacon, and scrambled eggs. I could've made it all at home, maybe even a little bit tastier too. I love when people write horrible reviews of hole in the wall places in the middle of nowhere. This is Searchlight, not Paris - what the heck are you expecting?? Searchlight is a small town about 50 miles from Las Vegas, and about the halfway point between Henderson and Laughlin. My Mom and I like going to Laughlin for a night or 2 to get away on weekends, and we have to pass through Searchlight to get there. We always see the Nugget, but have never stopped, until recently. Now, we went in there with pretty low expectations. It's fairly obvious from the outside (and inside) that this is a no frills joint. Half of the building is a "casino," and the other half is a cafe. There were plenty of tables and booths and it was "seat yourself," so we grabbed a large booth and were immediately approached by a server who took our drink order. My Mom ordered the famous 10 cent coffee. She expected that it would be horrible and that they would probably charge for refills (there had to be some trick), but she said it was pretty tasty and after 2 refills it was still only 10 cents! Can't really beat that! We were there for breakfast, which is served anytime. The prices were reasonable and our server was very friendly, if not a little rough around the edges. My Mom ordered the ham steak and eggs with hasbrowns and biscuits and gravy. I ordered the chicken fried steak and eggs with hash browns and sourdough toast. I am very particular about my hashbrowns - I prefer the shredded type rather than homefries. Our server mentioned that they actually offer both, which I loved! Unfortunately, he returned a few minutes later to tell us that they had just run out of hash browns and only had their country potatoes available (boo!). I decided to change my order to corned beef hash and eggs with toast instead. It didn't take long for our food. My Mom really enjoyed her ham steak and said that her eggs were cooked perfectly (over easy). The biscuits and gravy were tasty as well. I can honestly say that the corned beef hash was probably the best I've ever had. I was really surprised! There were 2 almost patties of hash, and the outer area was crusty and a bit dry, so I didn't think it was going to be good. But once I got in to the middle, the corned beef was so tasty and moist. I would definitely order this again. My eggs were also cooked perfectly (over easy), and the country potatoes were standard. To say the least, I was pleasantly surprised by the Nugget. It was better than any Denny's I've ever been to, but it's not Bouchon (let's be honest). Would I stop here again? Absolutely. Stopped here on a long Sunday ride. Perfect place to stop if you are coming from Vegas. About a 50 mile ride. Ate at the café. Food was actually really good. Got an egg white omelet with fruit and toast. Toast was a bit over toasted and pretty crispy, but omelet was great. They even included blackberries in the fruit, which was a nice surprise. And it is "Home of the 10 cent coffee," so you really can't beat that. The bust boy did try to take my plate as I was still chewing, which was a bit embarrassing. The food area is non-smoking, but it really doesn't make much of a difference since every where else in the casino is. So, enjoy that cigarette smoke while you eat. **This review is for the cafe only--not the casino** I'm going to make this short and sweet ... 1. It took three servers to understand that we wanted three waters. One for each of us. Three is the magic number, right? 2. I don't think I've ever had drier food. My dad's toast was so hard he couldn't bite into it. 3. It took three tries to get someone to bring a silverware set and napkins (that darn magic number again!). 4. There is literaly a SIGN separating smoking from non-smoking in this place. Its like telling you that you can smoke in my living room, but not if you sit on the couch. Its still the same room. Smoke can't read. If you're a non-smoker and from CA where it's pretty much illegal to even think about smoking, then this is pretty gross. read more

This is the type of place that the owner is holding off on renovations a little longer so it can be called a "landmark" rather than "run down". The food was edible, the prices were decent, but service was lacking. If you are starving in the middle of the desert (as I often am based on my reviews) go for it. So this is a slots casino, and I guess if you are jonesin for some gambling then this would hit the spot. I've been to the greasy spoon section of the "casino" a few times with friends and the food is ok, and cheap. Some classic dinner waitresses work there that are priceless! If you're there and have to have a burger it's a better option than the mcdonald's definitely! Be really sure to try the antique "one armed bandit near the entrance!!! There are only three places to eat in Searchlight. The Nugget casino, Algoberto's and McDonalds. I was working in the area and the day before we ate at Algoberto's. so today we went to Nugget casino. What a mess. I ordered the chili burger, served open face, a chili size. I don't know how it was made because the bun under the burger was so soggy, it was as if they dipped the bun in water before putting it on the plate. I thought it may be the chili was watery and had soaked the water out leaving the chili dry, but the bun wasn't tinted red as it would have been if soaking out of the chili. imagine you had taken the bun, held it under water until saturated, then flopped the resulting glop on the plate, place a burger patty on top, poured chili over the top with a side of cheese and onions mixed up, to put on top (what if the person wanted cheese, without onion or vice versa). They apparently buy cheap frozen french fries, since the average length was 1 inch in length. I have heard good things about the place, from coworkers, so it's possible I just ordered the wrong thing, my bad. But I like chili sizes and I use them to compare different restaurants. FYI I also use chile rellenos, if available, to compare Mexican restaurants. To be fair, my coworker had a green chile roast beef sandwich and cup of soup (think it was beef barley) he thought it was good. That being said, if I'm working in the area, and I'm not in the mood for Mexican food, I will try it again and make sure I don't order anything that would involve getting bread and water together. Will report the results, if it happens. Until proven wrong I would rate the local restaurants in the following order: 1. Algoberto's 2. McDonalds 3. Nugget Casino Since I'm not much of a MCDonalds fan (I like the fries, but I basically consider it dining to suppress hunger feelings), it's no small feat to be rated below them. read more

We stopped here on our way home from Vegas. It looked like it was a good place to eat due to the fact that the dining room was very full. We were seated and had coffee and our order taken quite quickly. However, we soon realized that the full dining room wasn't due to the good food it was due to the horrible kitchen speed and lack of working wait staff. Food sat in the window while the one waitress ran around take ordes ans delivering checks but no food. After an hour of watching that food kept sitting and people that were there before we walked in were not eating yet either and the tickets kept piling up for the kitchen window we paid for our coffee and left hungrier then we came in. Every time we head for Laughlin NV, we head for Searchlight and the Nugget! We have never had a bad meal and we LOVE the 10 cent coffee! We are heading there next week as a matter of fact. I read the other reviews and think some of them are off the mark unless they never have breakfast and are there only to gamble. We have never encountered lots of smoke and I have always enjoyed "Jeannie" because she always pays for our meal. Looking forward for being there sooooon. read more

This low profile casino out in the middle of Mojave Desert is definite diamond in the rough. The diner-style restaurant server up tasty yet simple dishes. In addition dollar drafts and free shuffleboard in the bar made this an easy and cheap place to hangout. Also every employee I encountered was extremely friendly and hospitable. Awful......if you eat there only order breakfast or a sandwich. Their dinners are horrible and made from frozen product, the gravy made us sick for two days, I still can't believe we ate it.
