"What I do is the opposite of building walls. I build bridges. A bridge is something that connects instead of separating." -Santiago Calatrava (1951- )
Crossing the River Liffey, the Seán Heuston bridge stands between Heuston Station and Phoenix Park. It was originally built in 1828 and today is used for pedestrians and Luas traffic - cars and trucks are shifted to the downstream Frank Sherman Bridge.
When it was built, it was the King's bridge but was renamed in 1941 to honor the Irish revolutionary figure Seán Heuston.
From here, a great view of the river and as you pass from time to time, you can see that the Liffey is truly tidal. At one point in the day, you can see the tossed bicycles and shopping trolleys on the riverbed. And later, the river is quite full and all of that muck is hidden.
