We came to Ireland for a couple days and decided to spontaneously stop at this castle for a morning tour. We were not disappointed! It was a gem of a tour and experience altogether. Our tour guide, Denise, was extremely knowledgeable and gave an awesome tour of the castle grounds and history about the inside of it. She was great! We recommend this to any family/ couple who wants to get away from the busy city and immerse themselves into the beautiful history of this castle. It also has a moat with eels in it - and an adorable duck named George! 10/10 stars!

He was so incredibly captivating. I'm not sure anyone spoke for the full hour of the tour we were all so fascinated in his stories. So sobering and poignant. For only €8 this is an absolute steal. We took the first tour in the morning which I recommend as you get to see everything, including the museum, before the crowds.

It housed many leaders of various rebellions, including the 14 leaders of the 1916 Easter Rising (and others during the Irish Civil War) who were executed there. Today, it is preserved as a national monument and one of Dublin's most visited historical attractions. The Kilmainham Gaol can only be seen via guided tours with tickets on sale 28 days before the one you might want. At the appointed date, I was online at 12:01 AM Ireland time to buy our tickets which sold out within minutes. Others might want to do the same. I've been to Alcatraz too, but this place has a little more blood on its hands. And it was so worth it! The generations of jail cells, the misery, the politics, the cruelty, the history, the executions, and all so well summarized and illustrated by our tour guide. All those years of history were so expertly portrayed in about an hour or so. I also remembered the scenes from "In the Name of the Father" (1993) that were filmed here. Other movies using Kilmainham Gaol as a set included: The Italian Job (1969), Michael Collins (1996), The Escapist (2008), and Paddington 2 (2017). I like a powerful reminder from a previous reviewer (Matt E.): The path to independence and freedom sometimes starts in dark, cold and miserable jail cells and not always on the battlefield.

For centuries, it was the headquarters of English (and eventually British) rule in Ireland. In 1684, a large fire destroyed a large portion of the castle. Instead of matching the original Gothic style, most of it was rebuilt using a Georgian style, similar to what you'd find in the French Palace of Versailles! It's quite the contrast. When you visit Dublin Castle, you can choose to explore it in two ways: with a self-guided tour to the state apartments or with a scheduled guided tour that visits the Viking Excavation, the Chapel Royal, and the State Apartments. When you first enter the courtyard, you'll immediately see the newer Georgian architecture in the neat red brick buildings surrounding the square. From the 13th century to the early 20th century, the castle was under British control. It served from being a royal palace and parliament to a prison. Dublin Castle was eventually handed over to General Michael Collins on the 16th of January in 1922. Collins was a soldier and a politician who lead the Irish people through their fight for Independence Dublin Castle plays a huge role in Ireland's history and a walk around the grounds is time well spent. Today the castle is a government complex and tourist attraction. Stroll through the famous Chester Beatty Library if time permits

Honest mum I did! Not any more now because it is all cleaned up and given a lick of paint, sure you would hardly even know it was from the 1500's! The grounds have all been cleaned up and the grass cut and it is a lovely place now to go for a stroll, long the lake and watch all the dogs chase balls and ducks and check out the local running clubs who frequent the paths. Late evening is a lovely time for a stroll here as it is very quiet. During the day it is a little more lively especially now as they have built a new children's play ground, keep an eye and ear out for the ice cream van who swings by here every Sunday and elbow any under fives who attempt to buy their screwball before you! The Castle itself is open for a tour and has a tearoom. Sometimes there is even talks and concerts help here too.

Tours are avaiable of the interior and there's a tea room if you're feeling a bit peckish. Make sure to check before you go for opening times as I went there once and they weren't open. One of the main draws as Melanie pointed out is the exapnisve grounds that they somehow managed to keep away from urban development. So if castles aren't your thing maybe the green open spaces will entice you.

Grafton Street is a blocked off area w/ retail stores all around & is known for local street musicians setting up and performing for all to see. As someone who loves watching live music, I really enjoyed watching the performances of those we saw during our visit(s) to Grafton Street. Each of the performers were very organized & so VERY talented (see videos included w/ this review of these talented artists) ! I loved how they each had their social media contact info listed. Helpful Tips when visiting Grafton Street: --- Make sure to bring some tipping money w/ you to give to each of the artists. --- Food Recommendations: Xian Street Food Dublin is located off of Grafton Street & they are famous for their Spice Bag - however, all their food is really good and made fresh. Great prices. They do have table inside and do take away. Can get very busy. --- Toliet: McDonald's restaurant is located on Grafton Street and you can use the toilet w/out having to buy anything. This is a "free-99" thing to do so I definitely recommend adding it to your itinerary when visiting Dublin. Hope this info helps!
