Barges and boats will dock here and there is frequently a concession boat since the island has no amenities. A little walk towards the gulf will bring you midway to a "kiddie pool" safe for kids to swim and play in or adults to relax. The water is truly great in both those spots. The gulf here is absolutely beautiful. There are small intact and crushed shells on the beach line and in the water about knee deep there are medium shells if you dig around. Waist deep are where the large shells are. There are plenty of these but you have to work for them. Bring goggles, flippers, etc. and it will be easy. We went on a day when the jelly larva were swarming so we stayed knee deep and still enjoyed ourselves and got a few good shells. If there had been no jellies we could have found A LOT more and bigger ones for sure. The further you walk down the gulf side the more secluded you will be. Get there on first boat out!

The white sand beach was beautiful but be prepared for all soft sand until you make it to the shoreline. For anyone with disabilities this beach could be a difficult to navigate. The other hurdle was the long set of stairs from the street to the beach. My friends and I were fortunate that we met guys each way, arriving and leaving, who carried our huge cart down and up the stairs for us. So be prepared. Gaze over the side of the pier and you will often see amazing marine life including fish, sea turtles, stingrays, dolphins, manatees, and pelicans. Whether you are looking for a great place to fish, spectate, or to take a stroll, don't miss a visit to the Russell-Fields City Pier!" I am not a fisherman by any means, and there were a lot of people fishing here. However, the 1,500 foot pier did look inviting, especially as it transitioned from clear to green to blue water. It's nice that the pier offers a $4.00 all day spectator pass whereby you can get a bracelet and come and go as you please; all day. It is a great spot to fish, people watch, look for marine life or simply watch everyone on the beach or in the water. We didn't stay too long as it was very hot, but the Gulf provided a nice breeze and it was a worthwhile visit.

Interesting fact, the sand is that way from granite deposits that flow from North GA and beyond all the way down into the Gulf as silt. Because of the beaches, the area attracts more and more tourist every year and IMO is getting more luxurious as the years go by. I've noticed better restaurants, more aesthetically pleasing looking buildings and just a more upscale feel with each visit. I'm writing this here because I noticed many of the beaches along the 6 mile coast are PRIVATE. I'm not sure which beach to actually post this review but I find that simply horrible, ridiculous, backwards and restrictive! Who adds gates with Codes to a beach?!?! I can understand a handful of properties and major resorts but to secure majority of the coastline with Controlled Access? In my particular visit I stayed at a resort and had the codes for entry/exit but found many people having difficulty simply getting to the beach! I don't think they knew the beaches would have controlled Access! Even to exit, you need a code! That's shameful! It was frustrating to see people struggle with umbrellas/coolers and chairs only to have to find the Public Beach and have to walk back to their car. May I add the city also doesn't have any form of boardwalk to enjoy a long walk down the coast or some form of transportation to maneuver the public/private beaches! You're basically on your own! I'm curious Who/When/How that got approved because that's definitely some backwards N. Florida, My Property, ME, ME, ME planning! I'm not a resident but I believe some things on this planet are public and Imo a beach is one of them! Plus their has to be better ways to protect and maintain these beaches than blocking them off from the general public. Any who, for anybody planning a Trip to Destin, Please do your homework! Mum and Dad have been telling me all week about the beach, but I did not really know what to think till today. The sand was white and the water was cold, thanks to dad baptizing me for a surprise dip. After a moment of shock, I did my best Peter impression and walked on water back to the sand. Guessing Dad was unsure if I liked it or not, so he dunked me a couple more times just to be sure. I was a good sport about it, but will have to rethink getting that close to the shore again. I loved running and chasing all the small dogs thru the sand. Wore out a few dogs today, but then again that is what I do. I'm going to ask my parents to bring me back soon, now that I know where the park is. Had a beach of a time and after a long bath , will sleep good tonight.
