They gave me a ton of paperwork to complete as this was an initial visit for two of my three children. After 20 minutes of completing paperwork upon submitting it to the front staff I asked if I could make a friendly suggestion. I suggested that they put their intake paperwork on a website for new patients to download in order to save time at the actual appointment. Or they could have emailed it to me prior to the visit. During my suggestion the front staff worker began to talk over me stating that, "Yeah, we don't do that. That's why we tell you to come in 30 minutes prior." I said "I know you don't do that. That is why I am making a suggestion. And I find it quite unreasonable that a pediatric practice would expect a kid or multiple kids to stay still for 30 minutes while their caretaker complete paperwork. Fast forward, once I submitted the paperwork I waited for 25 minutes. I was sitting RIGHT in front of the front office staff area. They were too busy training a new employee to say anything to me about the ridiculously long wait. The waiting room wasn't crowded so I didn't understand why I had to wait so long. I very politely went back to the front office staff and inquired about the status of my appointment. She explained that the dentist was in surgery. I'm wondering why she couldn't have apologized for my wait and explained that BEFORE I had to ask. Then finally we are called inside by a different front office staff member who very rudely told my daughter that she couldn't sit where she sat and has to sit over "there." Well if she did her job correctly, and especially since she was the first person to walk in the door she should have immediately told us where to sit. Then she asked me when my son's last dentist visit occurred. I had an attitude and said I answered that question on the paperwork that I spent 20 minutes completing. I'm wondering "Why didn't she review my paperwork prior to us entering the room?" Then she started ordering us around. "You sit there, you lay there..." I said, that's not going to work. Both sons were crying at this point because she was gruff and has absolutely no bedside manner and clearly doesn't know how to work with kids. Then the doctor bursts in and initially tries to be upbeat, but it became clear that he was rushing us and did not understand the dynamic that had previously occurred. I had an attitude with the employee and she had an attitude as well. Then Dr. Ergas actually fixed his mouth to tell me that "Maybe you should have brought another person with you to handle things." My black sons (3 and 1 years old) were crying hysterically and nobody cared. I told him that that was an extremely insensitive comment to make. Then he started yelling at me (yes, he actually raised his voice at me while my 3 year old black son was laying down in front of him) and tried to justify his issue. He explained that he was in surgery... I told him 3 times "I don't have a problem with you, I have a problem with your front staff." He essentially told me that if I have a problem with them I have a problem with him and kicked me out. He stated, "You can go get care somewhere else because we don't need this." I then told my kids that we were leaving because obviously this doctor doesn't like to work with black people. I am so disappointed that I actually had to have my first ever conversation with my black 4 year old daughter about why some people don't like people who look like us. I am going to make it my mission to let everyone I know understand that Dr. Ergas and his practice are completely unprofessional and, in my opinion, have some severe prejudice issues against black people and/or those who appear to be single moms. He needs some diversity/sensitivity training as does his staff ASAP!

He is efficient with his time making her experience not only tolerable but, & I cannot believe I'm saying this, fun. When all was done, she got to pick a generous prize from the treasure chest & we were on our way. I've been a patient at JD Howard dental for approximately seven years now and I have always been…read morehappy with the stellar service. I, as are many of the patients at JD Howard dental, am a bona fide sufferer of dentophobia. If not for modern dentistry, and all of the amenities offered with regards to comfort, I'm quite certain all of my teeth would rot and fall right out of my mouth. I know many other people feel the same way and that's why we search out dental practices that provide sedation dentistry without judgment. My phobia is so bad that I require sedation with regular dental cleanings. Apparently, sedation dentistry is no longer a major part of this practice because I don't see it anywhere on the website. Until recently that form of sedation for me was nitrous oxide. Though ironically, I have never really had much of a fear of the needle when requiring Novacaine. I know that's a little unusual, but it's true. Recently, I have heard that the practice was sold by Dr. Howard and bought by a corporation. The things that I'm experiencing there now are pretty typical of businesses that are bought by corporations and the biggest issue there is the patient always seems to come last and the bottom line is always first. As a result, I have lost the nitrous oxide for basic dental care. I've also noticed dentists have left the practice as have hygienists. There's always a reason for that. I had an appointment for the hygienist for which I was given a prescription for Halcyon, a benzodiazepine. The consent paperwork that I was given stated that the norm for this is Lorazepam or Ativan unless contraindicated. I have no health history that would exclude the use of Ativan. This is what happened. At approximately 10 to 15 minutes after I took the Halcyon, I knew there was going be a problem because that stuff hit me really hard. It hit me so hard in fact that the dental hygienist had to assist me from the waiting room to her room and back again. I have almost no recollection of anything that happened after that. I remember the hygienist taking my blood pressure and hearing the diastolic number, but I don't remember much of the actual work, I don't remember my teeth being polished, and I don't remember any examination or discussion with the dentist, which is particularly disturbing. I left the hygienist room with my swag bag, and once again her assistance to the waiting room. The worst part of that is that anytime I have dental work at JD Howard dental I'm now going to be out of commission for the rest of the day. Can't drive, can't work, etc. I'm in health care so I obviously can't work after that. That means I have to take a whole day off with vacation time which is completely unacceptable. With nitrous, none of the things cited above, were even remotely an issue. I finished my cleaning or whatever other dental work it was, made my way to my car, and drove myself home. After questioning, it has been brought to my attention that nitrous oxide services will no longer be offered by the hygienist. So my question becomes, who made that decision? Oh wait, it's a corporate thing and likely a refusal to pay for their certification, or accept any associated risk. At any rate, and in light of all of the above, I have no other choice, but to seek dental services elsewhere. I am a recent Snowbird and I have found a full service sedation dental practice in St. Petersburg, Florida, who offers nitrous for dental cleanings. After a lot of consideration, I have elected to go with them and have my first appointment in January '25. I only chose a Florida practice because I couldn't find sedation dentistry in this area. This recent appointment at this facility was unfortunately my last. The practice under corporate ownership has become something no longer desirable to me and judging by recent Yelp reviews, I'm not the only one.
