I had the pleasure of chartering Captain Hoffman for the opening day of the cobia season. Reports…read morefrom around the fleet were slow (several friends were on other private and charters and were texting throughout the day.) We caught several smaller fish before my son hooked into the biggest cobia of his life. After a long battle (that I got to capture forever on my iPhone) he landed his biggest fish ever- a 59 inch long behemoth. Later that afternoon, I was able to get a similar sized fish to eat an eel. Captain Hoffman allowed us to release the fish because we had plenty of meat to take home. His mate not only was helpful and created a friendly atmosphere- he also brought along a drone camera so my fight was captured on video. The boat (the Clockwork) is large and very stable with a cabin and shade to get out of the son. That is important for me, as I am on medication that makes me very susceptible to heat stroke. If you are looking for an opportunity to sample the cobia fishery in Virginia's inshore waters, I can't recommend Captain Hoffman enough.

There's a reason this guy is on nationally syndicated fishing shows -- he's the best on the bay. There's also his boat, "Clockwork," which is large, super comfortable, has a two story tower, and is outfitted with all the latest electronics. While we usually sight fish for cobia, Capt Zack has put us on striper, flounder, sheepshead, bluefin... you name it. He even offers a "fish camp" where we've sent our kids the past two summers. Can't recommend Salt Treated enough!

I wish I could review about their services but we never made it that far. Their web-site…read moreemphasizes to email or call for info. For various reasons, I prefer email. I emailed them. Within a few minutes, I receive an email response with "Please give me a call." No attempt to answer my questions. Why do businesses solicit customer questions by email if they have no intent to answer questions by email? I pinged them back that I was surprised by the lack of detail. I received another response that noted: "Figured a quick, immediate response was better than a detailed tonight." That was wrong...a quick/immediate response simply telling me to call accomplished nothing but annoying me. By the way, the "detailed tonight" email never came. When the business puts the burden on the customer to track down the business for answers, they may lose business. That happened in my case unless I decide to change my mind and track them down by phone for more info.

My teenaged kids wanted to catch some sharks and he made it happen. We spent the morning fishing for bait and the late morning catching sharks in the bay. I felt like we were out with an old friend. Captain Alan obviously knows what he's doing, was eager to make the trip special for my family, and loves his job. What a great day!

You've come a Long way baby! WOW! I used to come here as a kid and it was nothing like it is now!…read moreTalk about a glow up! The beaches were pristine and even had a buggy driving on the beach picking up bits of debris, but mostly you didnt see any trash on the beach or in the park. The pavilions were clean too! There's a huge playground for the kiddies with plenty of shade! There were lifeguard stations at regular intervals, as well as emt & police patrols making this a safe haven for beach goers! We checked out the lighthouse in the center of the park, the historical marker. There were regular benches and lounge benches at various spots so you could chill if you forgot your beach chairs. Speaking of which, there was a stand/kiosk that rented beachy items - umbrellas, tents water activities, etc. and also sold sunscreen, sunglasses, and other sundries and necessities. Also, we found a sweet swing set near the boardwalk where you can just melt away into the horizon. The beach wasn't crowded and the water was calm and beautiful. Such a relaxing vibe. We will definitely come back to this beach, way more chill than VA beach and cleaner than colonial beach. Plenty of parking too, come during the week if you can! Saturdays get pretty packed. It's only about 1 1/2 hours from Richmond. We saw a couple girls with a big dog on the beach, I think it was a boxer or a Rottweiler- a lifeguard nicely told them that dogs weren't allowed. They were compliant. I appreciated the way that was handled. The park was lovely with picnic tables, lots of trash receptacles to keep the area clean. Great family spot!
