I am surprised I haven't reviewed Sr. Machete's before. Open in 2019 and located right off the square, they have both indoor and outdoor seating-we typically go in summer and sit on the patio. They have a solid drink list and your typical selection of Mexican beers. While their menu is what you would find at your typical Mexican restaurant, they do have one unique item-Machete. A long, thin folder corn tortilla stuffed with cheese and meat. They come in various sizes and trust me, they are big and wonderful. Service has always been great. Staying at a nearby hotel and came in for dinner on Jan 2 around 5pm. Was welcomed by a very nice staff member and sat at a table just across the kitchen window. It was a Tuesday and I was hoping for a taco Tuesday special but they do not offer any so I opted to go with a half order of the nachos. Right away complimentary chips and salsa were brought out to my table and well as an ice water. The chips and salsa were tasty although I found several of the chips to be overly salted. My food came out rather quickly and was a huge portion, especially since I ordered the half size. Again, I found some of the chips to be a little too salty but once I pulled those out the rest of the dish was very good. I didn't get anything to drink so my bill before tip was just under $10. Had Valentine's Dinner here before a show at the Overture Center. Parking is available across the street in the ramp. Service was friendly. Machetes were the star of the show here, they have 3 sizes and are great for sharing. We got the pastor which was full of flavor! The steak portion was small and the fajitas were a bit dry in comparison so I would go for the machetes for sure. Our waiter was friendly and helpful. I ended up ordering the unique offering of the "machete" because I wanted to try it, and decided to split a 16" machete with my lunch companion. We ordered the marinated steak machete and we ordered extra pico de gallo and corn as fillings. The machete is long and slightly crispy -- like a cross between a taco and a burrito. Went here for lunch on a Thursday and was very glad we got there before noon, since they filled up at that time. The waitress was pretty quick to take our drink order and bring out some complimentary chips and salsa. The chips were quite tasty and weren't overly salted. Since it is called Señor Machetes, I ended up ordering the fajita machete with roasted chicken breast and a side of pico de gallo. First, I will say that its kind of misleading to say that there is a choice of side with the machetes, as it's an upcharge. And by choice of side they mean topping, i.e. pico de gallo, crema, cucumber habanero pico, roasted corn, jalapeños, or pickled onion. For me, it was necessary to have something extra to brighten up the flavor of the machete, but I probably could have just used the salsa. Overall the machete was decent and service was good, but the prices seem a little high for what you get, as the fajita machete was $13 for the nine inch without any sides. It would be nice if it would come with some beans, rice, or a pico as the House Favorites section does. read more

We popped in for a very early dinner on a recent Friday night and had the place to ourselves for the first 30 minutes. They do have a happy hour from 2-7pm but the choices were limited so I just ordered a non-happy hour Pacifico beer. They did serve free chips and salsa which were good. The waitress was very friendly and helpful in explaining the machete concept. We had never seen this before. I tried the smallest size (which is still a good portion) with an al pastor (pork and pineapple) filling. It was quite tasty. It comes with one additional filling/side - I got the pico de gallo. More fillings are an upcharge. I thought it was a tad pricey for what you got but I would order it again. My wife got the chicken enchiladas with verde sauce and she gave it a thumbs up. Seńor machetes, the best authentic Mexican cuisine i have had around the madison area. Walked in on a busy Saturday night, i was attended shortly after by the sweet & kind server. If you are a big taco lover this is the spot. I had the stake & lengua tacos with rice and beans. The tacos are LUXARY! The stake was amazing tasted just like stake on the grill. What a great meal! Right off Capitol Square and a stone's throw from Monona Terrace, you'll find Señor Machetes. We came on a beautiful August night, and coincidentally the same night as Madison's Dane Dances. So as our 16' Fajita Machete was presented before us we were simultaneously blessed with the rhythmic booms of Orquestra SalSoul Del Mad, a local salsa and soul group. Of course the sounds of live music are not included, but the happenstance made for a wonderful vibe (along with a pitcher of the house Marg). The machete... it's this glorious giant taco crepe hybrid. We got ours with the marinated shirt steak and it really hit the spot. Juicy and flavorful. Make sure to ask for plenty of spicy sauce- the machete would be incomplete without it. I came with a friend that is also a human garbage can and we just barely finished this bad boy. The margaritas were good- little heavy on the sweetener though. We did order the house margarita so that could be why. I would recommend upgrading for the Jose Cuervo margarita pitcher. We then ordered a steak fajita machete to share and it was absolutely amazing! It was such a unique dish. It contained plenty of steak, onions and peppers, delicious melty Mexican cheese, and roasted corn (we added the corn). The service was good as well. Our waitress was very nice and attentive. The servers also followed COVID protocols. They sanitized, wore, their masks, and had tables spread out. Overall, it was a great experience! Racist horrible staff! Got there after going to the Art Fair in the Square. Were told it would be a 35-40 minute wait for food since the kitchen was backed up. After about 15 minutes with no service we asked if we could get drinks and chips. We then got menus. A few more tables were seated after we got there. When staff came out to take orders, they went to tables that were seated after us! They were Hispanic. We were told they were here first! BS! I will never step foot in that place again! We have Jalisco a few doors away! They are amazing! And there is Taco Local! Excellent food! I went with the vegetarian machete, which included sauteed peppers, onions, jalapenos, tomatoes and cheese. The machete is like a longer, less pressed, less closed version of a quesadilla, think somewhere between a taco and a quesadilla. It arrived with sides of sour cream, salsa, guacamole and escabeche. The tortilla was fresh and strings when you pulled it apart. The fillings oozed out of every bite. The crunchy and flavorful vegetables rounded out the subtle queso fresco. Let me start by saying that we went for an early lunch and the place was almost empty. We couldn't understand how it wasn't packed during the lunch rush. They had drink specials, which I didn't drink but I'm sure others would appreciate. Our server was amiable and courteous. As a Tejano and Chicano who grew up in South Texas along the border, I can assure you that the plates are priced reasonable alongside being served well. I will also say their serving of free broth as an appetizer is a reminder of some home restaurants. My only dislike is the serving of chorizo with lunch plates. It must be a Midwest thing as in South Texas; we mainly eat it for breakfast. By the way, Mexican cuisine shouldn't be seen as cheap. This place does Mexican food justice with generous servings and good prices. Don't take advice from a non-Mexican, non-Mexican-American for eating at a Mexican restaurant. I wouldn't attempt to know more about Italian or German food. If you're nearby, do yourself a favor and drop on in. read more

My favorite spot downtown for quick, easy Mexican food. It's Midwestern Mexican, not what you'd find in Mexico for the most part but for what it is it's really good. You could definitely find something for a picky eater here, the menu is friendly for kids and adults alike. Always friendly, attentive (but not overbearing) service, even when they're slammed. The bar is small but has a decent selection of tequilas and frozen margaritas and some good NA stuff, too! It's not a romantic space, very casual vibes, good for catching up with old friends. The patio is big and can get pretty loud with all the bar patios in the area but not much can be done about that. The whole block tends to be busy with 20-30-something's.
