Dear grown-ups considering this daycare for their beloved children, We started at ScuttleBugs four years ago. Our youngest will graduate next week, and it's time for us to say goodbye. We've collected so many incredible memories over the years, and it's very important to me to leave this review to express our gratitude and appreciation. You will meet loving, patient, and kind teachers, very friendly office staff (the door was always open), and an amazing chef (sometimes I brought one of my boys shortly before lunchtime and the smell was very delicious). What's special about this daycare is that everything is included in the tuition. You don't have to worry about packing snacks, lunch, sunscreen, diapers... everything is taken care of. We love Scuttlebugs! The teachers and loving and caring and always willing to hear your concerns or feedback in order for your child to feel at ease in the classroom. Their meal plan is another reason why we love scuttlebugs, it exposes the kids to heathy and diverse food, preventing picky eaters in the future. Besides that, they take the precaution of always applying SPF of their own to the kids before outside time. And if needed, they provide diapers too. We sent our 3yo twin girls to ScuttleBugs for several months before moving away. And the girls had terrific time there. The teachers cared for them with big hearts. They had fun activities always prepared for kids. The girls loved their time there. There were incidents of course, but they were prepared to deal with them. Whenever we had concerns (small ones), they were very responsive to them. While tuition isn't very low, for the value they provide, I think it's more than reasonable. read more

I found this center through my mother's group and we had our kid's event there. Pam and her team are fantastic! Truly made the children time at the center be all about discovery and fun. I should have read reviews on Yelp before applying for this "four start" school. Such a disappointment and frustration to have go to the waiting list & enrollment process and ended up with a rejection notice two weeks prior to the start date. Why??? If a child have tantrums, cannot feed himself, and have eczema-related skin issues, he/she will be turned down because "the school always wants the best for the children!" I was told that it's not fair for my son to not have enough attention because the teacher to child ratio is 12:1!!! Why didn't you advertise during the tour? We have not asked for more or less attention for my son. Unfortunately, the school rejected after we had informed my son's former school of his last day. The the refund took a little more than one month to finalize after multiple calls and emails. By the way, I could never speak to someone by calling the main line. It always sent to voicemail. The initial refund did not include the registration fee as what they promised. When reminding them of the refund, I was informed of the $50 charge for the missing door access cards!!! read more

We loved being part of the amazing loving Scuttlebugs family. My son just graduated PreK this year! My favorite teachers were Ms. Nicole, Ms. Tiffani and Ms. Anna. Shame on you Scuttlebug leadership! You can make mistakes and not take any accountability, but hold others accountable. We all made mistakes within the enrollment process but then punish us by rejecting my son days before his first day. Management and directors are educated on paper but do not apply what they have learned in real life events. The condescending emails sent to us were not appreciated. Then when we respond back with the same tone, it was your time to play victim. However, thank you for the rejection, you are correct about one thing, it was best. Your retaliatory and self-centered behavior is not the environment for my child. My wife and I have been very happy with this place for our child care. We've been happy customers since 2018. The staff has always been very helpful in getting our kids settled at drop off and ready for pick up. I've always been confident in the staff's ability to do their job. Most importantly, the management has a great attitude and work ethic, they have always accommodated our requests with regard to any issues that have arisen. We love ScuttleBugs!! And more importantly, my daughter loves Scuttlebugs. My daughter has been going to SB for almost a year and half. They've been tremendous, especially during the pandemic. Every teacher we've encountered has been fantastic--caring, kind and thoughtful. My girl started at SB as an almost 1.5 year old who was not the best at walking (no developmental issues; just a chill toddler with no interest in moving yet). While she was registered for the young toddler class, we listened to their guidance and moved her to the infant class for a few months to allow her time to adjust and perfect walking/running. She was soon in the toddler class then moved to the 2-year old class on her birthday. Also worth noting: my daughter eats a vegan/plant-based diet and this has been a non-issue with SB, as Miss Joana does a great job making vegan meals every day and Miss Linda ensures vegan snacks/ingredients are always in stock. Teachers are also great at ensuring children receive meals that align with each individual child's allergy and food restrictions. I've really been surprised with how quickly my daughter's vocabulary and knowledge has expanded over the last year and half. She is so happy at "school" and we are so grateful for everyone at SB! read more

We were very interested to take a tour with full understanding that there was a waitlist, however, the gentleman receptionist said that it was not even worth trying. Disappointing and unfortunate as children will continue to age out, I'm not sure how you acquire the waitlist spots when they open. Edited - I'm not upset. More surprised and disappointed as I expect a business that works with children to have better tact in general conversation. There was no discussion of my child's age or expectation, only a follow up in request to see your facility. I appreciate your response but we have a lengthy list and being able to cross one off because "the waitlist is full we can't do anything for you" (these are exact words) makes it easier on us to come to that decision. We have absolutely loved our time at Scuttlebugs. My daughter started at 6 months old in the infant room, and continued on through GC3 in the 2s room. She loved her teachers and her friends there, and always came home happy. Every day when we arrived, she took off for her classroom with barely a glance back at me :-) I always knew she would be safe and taken care of. We have only left because we moved, otherwise she would have attended up until it was time to go to her local public school, and my infant would have been starting in 3 weeks. They have also been great during the pandemic. They continued to serve families, and have a great cleaning procedure in place, as well as a very protective drop off/pick-up process. The other families are also very respectful of these policies and procedures. We did not worry about sending her during this time. Highly recommend using them, they will be greatly missed! read more

Our son (3yo) has been attending Scuttlebugs for six months. We moved him from another nearby daycare due to poor quality of care there. WE LOVE SCUTTLEBUGS. It is an amazing school and we are so happy we moved him there. The teachers are fantastic, so patient and caring and we can just see the amazing new things he's learning. We went to a recent birthday party and the (former!) Director, and the Pre-K teacher, came to the kid's birthday party! It was 4th of July, and they took time out of THEIR holiday to come to a school child's party. That was honestly just so sweet. The school is great - I love their approach to education at this age (focused on play) and they share a lot of pictures, videos and blog posts. It's nice getting to see your kiddo having fun. They are just really ON IT. They are super duper organized which is great. They get a ton of outside time, and the "indoor gym" is really nice for rainy weather. When our son started, it was winter and constantly raining, so the fact that he could still get his energy out was great. They have Tuff Tumblers come in for optional EXTRA activities, which is awesome. We've had our kiddo in soccer class since day one. We just don't have time for stuff like that on the weekends...! The other thing is that Scuttlebugs MAKES OUR LIVES SO EASY. We just drop him off. They provide breakfast, all snacks, healthy lunches (who knew my kid would eat QUINOA, seriously?!), more snacks. Miss Joana, the cook, even knows the kids so well - she tells me about one of the kids who won't eat XYZ, so she prepares something special for him. Just so much extra special effort. They also provide diapers, all the bedding/sheets, and even formula for babies (assuming they're formula-fed, of course.) We never have to do anything - no packing lunches, no remembering to bring sheets. It just makes life so much easier for working parents. Can't recommend this daycare highly enough. Scuttlebugs was a game-changer for our family. It was the only preschool in our area that didn't hold kids back on curriculum just because they weren't potty trained by a specific time. We were at our wits end at our prior school. Our son had significant potty training delay and was held in a classroom with much younger children. He was sad, bored, and acting out. Scuttlebugs changed all that, and so much more. He has enjoyed an awesome and fun curriculum over the past 15 months. The teachers are loving, patient but firm, and are loyal to Scuttlebugs. I have seen them cry talking about our kids, because they care for them so much. Scuttlebugs costs a bit more than other places, but you can always tell why. They are constantly improving and replacing worn equipment, making improvements to the space, and have the loyalty of their staff and teachers. Oh, and you'll get spoiled by how they supply *everything* (food, blankets, diapers, sunscreen, etc.) We are sorry to leave, but know we will have friends at Scuttlebugs forever. read more

This is a wonderful development/ day care center for children. The teachers are kind, patient and engaged with the children. In the mornings, my grandson runs in enthusiastically to greet the teacher and his classmates. The communications home are great~ daily postings of food, diaper changes, naps~everything a parent needs to know. All I can say is, connect with me offline to understand my journey with SCD. Everyone lives in their own reality and sometimes in life you win some and lose some. My comments on this place are very disappointing and brings forth the effort to review. We as adults need to take accountability for mistakes and understand the longevity of emotional intelligence which I feel this establishment does not have or do. In the beginning I was incredibly excited to have my child join this place but as the interactions got more frequent with them I feared exposing my child to such an environment would be more detrimental to their growth in the long run. Scuttlebugs is amazing and deserves every star! My daughter has been there for about a year now and really thrived at this school. She started in the infant classroom last year when she was 11 months old and moved up to the toddler room not long after. The teachers and staff are caring and attentive; directors Ashley and Eunice are great, always greeting parents and kids with a smile on their face. There is even a personal cook who looks after the special diets of the kids! All in all, you will not find a better daycare in the area. There is nothing more comforting as a mom than dropping our daughter off every morning, knowing that she will be cared for. We are moving out of state and incredibly sad to leave Scuttlebugs. We found Scuttlebugs at a rather desperate time in our lives, knowing that, if we had to, we could keep looking. But after the tour, we were cautiously optimistic and after many months we are very, very happy. They aren't just caring, they are interested in helping our little ones develop to their highest potential. They develop their staff, they don't just hire them, and they are continually working to improve their curriculum. It's all inclusive, we aren't bringing diapers or water bottles or what have you. Beyond being reliable, loving partners in raising our children, they are professional to deal with and I am always impressed with the whole package they bring to the task. But the real eye-opener was how they handled Covid and the regulations that came from that. As essential employees, we needed their help and they bent over backwards to help us, but resisted caving into us when it affected their rules and the new, changing, regulations. They quickly pivoted to a much more rigorous process of pick up and drop off, limiting the number of adults in the lobby, always having sanitizer, and prohibiting access beyond the lobby. Yet they felt even warmer and more caring at the same time. They went the extra mile to keep their staff as secure as they could, so my little ones had access to the same teachers they have grown to love. Anyway, we continue to be comfortable with our decision and would recommend Scuttlebugs without hesitation. read more

Here, I can finally note this school! My daughter left it at the end of this month after 2 years spent with the Scuttle Bugs team. She started not even 3 years ago, she was very very shy and reserved, she did not speak a word of English, she hardly understood this new language (we are French and it was only a year that we were in the USA, it was her first daycare in English). She is now 4 and a half years old and is completely fluent thanks to this school. They have always been very open on this subject, on her small difference, even asking her to teach them a few words of French. Since the months spent in the school, there have been a lot of staff changes. Today it seems more stable and the school innovates constantly. Today the children have guinea pigs which they learn to take care of but also a kitchen garden. The teachers are adorable with the children, tender and listening to them. For info everything is provided: diapers, wipes, sun cream and all meals and snacks. The menu has helped us choose this school. As French, we wanted our daughter to eat healthy and balanced. This is indeed the case thanks to the chef who is cooking good food every day. The school program is adapted, my daughter has just finished her Pre-K here and I know she will do exactly the same thing next year in TK. At the end of the day I recover her work at the school to see its progress. They also organize field trips that I had the pleasure of accompanying. But also events of all kinds: Valentine's Day, Mother's Day, eggs hunt, carnival, graduation ... I recommend this school to all, it is also a friend who had warmly recommended it to me and I will do the same. Thanks Scuttle Bugs for making my daughter so happy to go to school! Scuttlebug is a safe, clean and play based preschool. Many schools claim to organize educational activities but don't have qualified and/or articulate teachers to initiate and organize those activities. In all the tours I have taken thus far, the directors (tour organizers) did not arrange interaction with their teachers, even when I requested them. During the tour at Scuttlebug, Nicole, one of the teachers approached me and started talking about the school. Children this age absorb so much from their environment that they start speaking a language new to them by the time they are three; a feat difficult for even the most brilliant adults. And child psychologists consider this age vital for future brain development. So it seems important that they have at least one articulate and interactive English speaking teacher around. Scuttlebug displays names and qualifications of its teachers on the website. None of the other schools I visited do that. Directors at Scuttlebug, Ashley and Eunice are excellent communicators, spend a lot of time with kids, and know them by name. When I shared new research on educational activities, seminars, phonics etc., with them over email, their response was quick and encouraging. Their fee is only slightly higher than other schools by about $10 per day. $10 for diapers, wipes, and food cooked on site by a personal cook (that other schools don't provide) sounds like a worthwhile investment. My daughter looks forward to going to school in the morning. A better indicator, I believe, is whether she wants to come back after school. And now that she has started speaking, when my wife goes to school to pick her up in the evening, and her teachers tell her "Mommy has come, let's go", she sometimes says "No No". She identifies with her toddler room teacher Ms. De, and her new preschool teacher Ms. Anna. Ms. Perla is very playful with kids. The reason we are changing the school is that my wife is starting her masters in fall, so I'll need to pick our daughter in the evening, and it takes about an hour from my office to drive to Scuttlebug thanks to US 101 and San Thomas "Expressway". I hope Sam opens a branch in the Mountain View/Sunnyvale area. read more

Do Not enroll your kids here!!! The staffs are nice to you as long as you hand over the monthly checks, but once you run into a scheduling issue, they take your deposit and hold their contract very stringently with a whole lot of attitude. I returned to work from maternity leave and due to transportation issues, my husband and I decided to pull our child out temporarily. We were late in giving them the full 30 days notice by a few days, and they not only applied our last month's deposit for the month that he did not attend, they used the delta for the following month that he did not attend and requested for more funds. I emailed to the director, Sheryl, and she never extend the courtesy to respond back via email or phone call. The only time she says hi to me is to remind me that the tuition is due (I forgot my check a day late). When we enrolled our son, we wanted him to be exposed/learn socialization amongst kids his age. This was not met because instead of being in the toddler age appropriate room, they pushed him into the preschooler's (4-5yrs of age) room to combine the handful of enrollments. I sure hope the staffs remember the names of the few kids that did attend! How would they handle having many kids like Montessori/Challenger schools. He was never potty trained/receive age appropriate lesson plans even though we were paying for this higher rate. The preschooler's room had tiny lego/toy pieces that my two-year-old could have put in his mouth and choked. Every time I visited the center, all the kids were individually off on their own to play. I rarely ever saw group lessons/play/singing. It's unfortunate that ScuttleBugs is a very new establishment that relies heavily on word of mouth, but would be willing to burn bridges. I find it harsh to charge people $600/month as penalty for missing a few days of their 30 days advance notice. They could have gave us credit in services or pro-rate the five days and refund the rest. Instead, they robbed us of our whole last month's deposit. read more

Our son has been attending Scuttlebugs for over a year now. We have had the best experience and feel so fortunate he is enrolled here. He started in the twos class and is now in junior preschool. The teachers genuinely care about the students. His current teacher, Ms. Valena has been so good with our son and he loves her so much. The director Stephanie and founder Sam have always been very friendly and responsive to our concerns. They are also very accommodating to food allergies and the cook Joanna has been great to work with to make sure our son follows a gluten free diet. The food offered is so healthy and nutritious with ethnic meals and lots of fruit and vegetables. 100 times better than other facilities we toured, where goldfish crackers and juice were the main snack foods. There are also lots of planned activities through the year, carnivals, book fairs, pot luck dinners, parents night out, and informative sessions for parents. The curriculum is play based and Reggio inspired and they practice positive discipline. The kids get plenty of time to play outside each day, lots of sensory and art play, reading and circle time. I also feel that my son is very safe, a keycard is needed to enter the lobby and the classrooms. The play yard has opaque high walls so the kids are not visible from the outside. The facility is just a couple of years old, inside it is very bright and clean and the toys and facility are in great condition. read more

July 28, 2016 Today my daughter is "graduating"--it's her last day at Scuttlebugs. She's five-and-a-half years old and has been scampering about Scuttlebugs since she was an infant. Now she follows her brother, 7, into the next phase of schooling. He went to Scuttlebugs, too. All told, our family has been with Scuttlebugs for four-and-a-half years. At this moment, we're the longest standing family at the center. That's got to count for something. If you're like me and you want to keep score, here are some key numbers on a scale of one to five for your consideration. ADMINISTRATION. The management team at Scuttlebugs is committed to learning and growth, both in their students and as business owners. They do an effective job of communicating organizational updates, changes, and decisions to parents. And while there have been some bumps along the way, the management team has course corrected when necessary and learned from experiments that didn't go as planned. On this metric, I give them a 4 out of 5. As the administration team grows, as it's currently doing, I expect them to notch a solid 4.5 in time, as their efforts will more effectively scale. EDUCATORS. One of the things I most value in Scuttlebugs is the teaching staff. They care about the kids and rightfully take pride in the positive impact they're having, now and into the future. At every phase of our kids' learning and growth, I was repeatedly impressed by the overall quality and commitment of the teaching staff. They're the guts of the operation and a good portion of success that Scuttlebugs is achieving. 5 out of 5, end of story. CURRICULUM. I appreciate the Pre-K curriculum a great deal, in terms of its focus on having fun while exploring thematic content, week to week. The curriculum prepared my son for kindergarten, and I firmly believe it has prepared my daughter, too. As an important side note, my wife and I like to see the results of school engagement in the form of drawings, paintings, and sculptures created in the course of the day. Because the curriculum outside of Pre-K is largely invisible to me, I'm giving a 4 out of 5 here. But please note: Scuttlebugs has recently promoted a gifted teacher to run the curriculum for the entire center. I anticipate very good things from her in the future and won't be surprised if a 5 is in the offing. FOOD. Two words: Ms. Joanna. She's been at Scuttlebugs as long as Ms. Sam, one of the principals of the center. Ms. Joanna is responsible for food preparation, from morning till late afternoon. What's more, she's naturally gifted with the kids and often lends a helping hand as this or that situation requires. 5 out of 5. PHYSICAL SPACE. This is the weakest part of the center, in my opinion, and I'm referring specifically to the outside play area. When I first saw it, it struck me as unnatural and artificial. But in time, in fact, very quickly, I got used to it, as did my kids, who never had any hang ups with the play yard. They just played, and I think yours will, too, despite the lack of trees and green grass. Overall, I give Scuttlebugs a 4.2 out of 5 and would re-enroll our kids without any reservations if we had to start again from the beginning. Oh Scuttlebugs, how we would miss you. So sad that Scuttlebugs team is not moving with us out of CA. My daughter attended the toddler room for about 6 months. She absolutely loves everything about Scuttlebugs and runs out of my arms every morning to go in. I love the open communication from the founder Sam and directors Ashley and Eunice. Also, it is great to get greeted with a smile and everyone you run into for pickup - have a story for you about your child. Everyone, from the room teachers to amazing chef, to directors partake in interactions with the children. And the teachers are so amazing. I am in awe of the creativity and patience they show to all kids. My daughter had a tough first week, as most kids do. But the teachers took extra care to make her feel better and help her in the transition. My only regret is that I did not find out about Scuttlebugs earlier. We have been at Scuttlebugs since 2015 and sadly have to say goodbye as we move out of the state. We were late to the game on getting into a childcare facility but Sam understood our dilemma and helped us formulate a plan to get our son into the facility as close as possible to when I was to return to work, a few partial weeks here and there actually helped me adjust to full time so that was a bonus! This past January we had the opportunity to have our daughter join our son at Scuttlebugs but not before we did all our homework on other facilities, costs, value for what you get and quality of care providers. There just was not something else out there that made me as comfortable as Scuttlebugs for many reasons. The first being Miss Lala, she has a way with infants that allows them to explore their entire personality and express it as well. She helps them communicate through signage language, knows when the littlest thing might be off with your babe and also teaches them manners, which I love! Miss Perla will rock your babies and take them to music class so they get exposed to culture, sounds and love as early as possible. This duo has been there since the start and I know my kids adore them. That is just the infant room, we have been through the toddler room, Jr Preschool and Preschool as well. These rooms have amazing teachers as well, Miss Greta in the Jr Preschool was a godsend to me when I had Isabella and was trying to potty train Oliver as well. She gave my husband and I some sound advice and then helped us out along the journey, without her I don't think we would have had him potty trained as quickly as it was. There of course are always bumps along the way but I always felt heard and that I could continue to express my thoughts and concerns at any time. I will greatly miss the staff and facility as we make our trek to our new home but will definitely plan on visiting! read more

I called this center and had a tour with them and everything looked fine in the first visit. At the time of tour, I was supposed to put my child there 8 months from the time of the visit and everything was set (paperworks, fees,....). Then some plans have changed, and I called the center to move the start date to 2 months earlier (which was 6 months after the time of the tour). They said, they still will have opening but will get back to me the week after my call. I didn't receive any call the week later and I called back, the person on the phone told me to leave a message and re-assured me that they will get back to me by the end of next week. Again one week passed and no one got back to me, I called and the person on the phone again promised me to call back. Back and forth, I neither received a call from them, nor I heard from them in any other way. Even now, that we are approaching the initial time frame (8 months passed) I haven't received any communication from them. I registered my child in another daycare, they had opening and my child is now enjoying time there, but the questions here is: how do we trust a center when they don't even return a call? With the top cost of childcare, how this center really is irrespective of customer's needs and requests? When they cannot get back to me just for a phone call to discuss, if I had further suggestions about the quality of care, would they really care? These open questions made me think of another place that actually value the needs of customers. read more

We as first time parents had a lot of questions and concerns when it came to finding the right day care. Our research placed Scuttlebugs on the top of the list, and we were extremely pleased to find that out experience matched their reputation within a short span of time. Our 2 year old is shy but he absolutely loved going to 'school' and adapted to the place within days. His teachers, Greta and Emma are amazing - calm, consistent and most importantly, loving and caring. The center maintains high standard of hygiene, safety and has a variety of activities to encourage learning organically. I appreciate the daily reports they send and the administrative staff is friendly and attentive as well. They are definitely doing great work and worth the bit of extra fees as compared to other places in the area. read more

My daughter attended Scuttlebugs for Jr. Preschool. She learned a great deal from their wonderful teachers and staff. Each day brought her mother and I new surprises from the new words she learned and activities she engaged in. My daughter made her first friends at Scuttlebugs. Her growth, both intellectually and socially convinces me that Scuttlebugs is an ideal place to introduce a child to the world of education outside of the home. The school takes great pride in their quality of their educational methods, their equipment (and toys), and maintaining a clean and inviting learning environment for our kids. My daughter (10 months old) was in the infant room at Scuttlebugs from December 2016 until recently. We were very happy with Scuttlebugs and felt the staff, teachers were caring, loving and treated my daughter and us like family. We wanted to especially thank Lala in the infant room and she is beyond amazing in every way! You really cannot find a more genuine group of teachers and staff. We received daily reports and teachers always called to let you know if something was going on or your child was becoming ill, etc. They also sent photos and videos, which was great to have at work while you are missing your little one! We recently moved daycare providers because we found less expensive daycare within Santa Clara that worked better with our budget. That being said, I would happily recommend Scuttlebugs to any family looking for daycare. read more

We were so sad to leave the ScuttleBugs family when we had to move closer to San Francisco for work. Back in 2015, relocating from Australia to the Bay, Sam the owner made taking a tour of the centre a breeze and we were impressed with how safe and spacious the centre is and how soon we could have our daughter start there. Our daughter truly loved every day spent at ScuttleBugs, forming very close bonds not only with teachers but her fellow classmates. Excellent and patient with potty training and cleanliness. Our daughter commenced there as a toddler and moved up through into Jnr preschool. The varied curriculum and environment helped her flourish and she's now a bubbly positive 3yr old. This is an update review. Appreciate the positive response from the management on our case. As stated earlier in my review, the facility is really great and we were very impressed with it. Unfortunately due to lack of timely communication resulted us in opting for a different daycare center. I still hope that in future years I will be able to enroll my son at scuttlebugs. read more
