Scubatoys is a Dallas dive shop that has always piqued my curiosity when driving back to my hotel. So this time I made the time to stop in and check it out! Scubatoys is near exit 442 (how's that for an auspicious number?) on I-35E N. For some reason it looks smaller on the outside than in. Pretty impressed with the size of the facility and the variety of gear they have. A neophyte diver could pretty much get fully outfitted here. Very surprised that they ha a good selection of backplates, wings, and hardware for them. Pretty uncommon in a typical dive shop, who all seem to specialize in selling ScubaPro Hydros-X BCDs. Luckily enough I have two complete sets of diving gear, so I was pretty immune to most of the shiny new toys there. But it's called Scubatoys for a reason. In the end I picked up a couple of replacement mouthpieces for my regulators, and a travel tube of zipper lube. ST is a complete shop, they'll do training as well as sell gear. They even have a diving club, although I hate to imagine where they dive in the Dallas Metro Area. Good shop and someplace to pick up scuba toys. Repeat and recommend! read more

We had our 3 kids certified in OW by ScubaToys across two different weekends about 2 months apart (our 13-yr old twins went one weekend and our 15-yr old did her checkout dives about 2 months later) in 2022. The weekend that our twins went, the temps were somewhere in the 40s. the visibility wasn't that great for both weekends. It was a little bit warmer when our older daughter went. Both of those weekends, it was 2 young people paired up with a dive master or instructor the whole time. Never did I see a dive where they were not paired up with an experienced diver. The instructor was a police officer who regularly dives in the trinity river (and other water ways) for search and recovery dives (not the same one in the recent incident). He was in the water all the time. I felt that the instructions were clear and safety was always a top priority. There were at least 2 diver masters and the instructor both weekends. The classes including DMs and instructor was about 9-10 people. There was an covered platform with stairs to the top deck where I was able to watch my girls dive. Never did I worry about their safety. The only complaint I could make about Scuba Toys, is that I felt like their organization of the classes could be better. I don't remember all the details but I remembered we had some problems with getting them all the forms they needed (physician sign off, medical questionnaires, liability waivers, etc) and could have been handled easier. Seemed like we sent them but the scuba shop could find them or something. In addition, we have bought some gear from them, then bought some gear from other resources. read more

We had a fantastic experience here yesterday. I called ahead and spoke with Ryan, because I know very little about scuba gear. But we need some for an upcoming trip to Turks and Caicos. Ryan was kind enough to ask a few questions and even check the water temp where I was going! Very nice! He assured me they had tons of gear and it's best to try it on. He was right! We got exactly what we needed for my boyfriend, and I got this fabulous blue shirt for myself. They have TONS of selection for wetsuits and gear. I highly recommend them! I love going to dive shops! I've been a PADI Instructor since 2013. I used to order from Scuba Toys when I lived in Hawai'i. Now we live here. . Nowhere to dive. I went there to get my battery replaced in my Suunto Stinger and really wanted to check out the place. I had emailed them about the battery change and they said they'd do it for $20 and tax. It gave me a good reason to drive all the way out there (35-40 minutes). They couldn't do it. They said I needed to send it out. I understand. Nobody there could do it. So, I decided to look around. It seems like they were going out of business. Stock was limited, areas were disorganized, etc. I wanted to buy something so I even checked out the t-shirt wall with all the 3X t-shirts. Nothing I liked in any sizes. Open the cupboards and they were bare. I hope they don't go out of business. Put some more effort into merchandising. Fill the shelves with a selection I worked at a dive shop in Japan where we had like 100 masks to choose from. I think Scuba Toys had like 8. Good luck guys. Lord knows we need more divers and more divers means more equipment/gear. read more

I've always had good luck with finding what I need and have recommended them many times. This last time I was there it seemed as though there were way less items in stock than in the past. My boyfriend loves scuba diving and encouraged me to learn. We had a trip planned for Belize so I wanted to get certified before I went. The online website shows you the available class times they offered. I chose the 4-day class, which was 2 weekends in a row: Sat/Sun at the store's pool in the back, and Sat/Sun at the lake out in Terrell, TX. The other option was evening classes on Tues/Thur with the pool & lake session on the weekend. Depending on which instructor is teaching on the weekend you signed up for, you would get either PADI or NAUI certified. They're essentially the same, with NAUI having a few extra skills to learn. The pool session in the back of the store was a great way to learn and not be scared. We got familiar with the equipment and practiced skills underwater until we were comfortable. The lake in Terrell was about an hour drive outside of Dallas, and is a man-made scuba lake. It has sunken ships and an underwater plane that was pretty awesome to "find". The lake is dark and the visibility isn't that clear, so it forced us to learn to use our navigation skills to find these objects! It was a bit scary at first, but with the instructor and your dive buddy, you'll learn everything you need to know! I had a great experience with Scuba Toys and loveddd my instructor! read more

I ordered a simple strap for my BCD and got the run around for about TWO MONTHS! I first contacted ScubaToys to ask about diving lessons. They got back to me same day. Their reply was helpful and friendly. I then went in to buy some gear. It was very busy and they were very short staffed due to employees out sick. They checked in with me several times even though they couldn't help me right away. Do you want to get scuba certified? GO HERE. The instructors and dive masters are ABSOLUTELY FANTASTIC. I was taught in class by Georgia and Tom (Leora came to be our diver master) and they were all so patient, and nice, and made it so much fun! We did our first weekend at their shop, and although the drive wasn't fun from Frisco, it was a great experience. They have a warmed pool, great equipment, and are great educators. Just come in your bathing suit, with clothes on top. Bring a change of undergarments, a towel, a hairbrush/detangler if you're a girl with long hair, and all your gear (fins, snorkel, mask, booties). You'll definitely want to buy them before you come because class starts before the shop opens. The weekend at the lake made me SO GLAD that I went with ScubaToys. Whereas other places had rickety little spots at the Clear Springs Scuba Park, ScubaToys has tables, a roof over them to provide shade, a giant pod with tons of equipment for the lake, and a nice dock. Honestly, the ScubaToys set up for the certification weekend made it clear who the best choice is, and it's these guys. On top of the great resources, their instructors/dive masters are phenomenal. Mike was our main instructor, but they were all so supportive and comforting. Heads up - the Dive Masters don't get paid, so bring some extra cash on the dive weekend to tip them. You'll probably have 2 - 3 dive masters for your group, so don't be the dick who doesn't tip! Check out my review of Clear Springs Scuba Park for more heads up on that weekend, but to conclude, these are the BEST guys in DFW to get certified by. 5/28/2019: I emailed ScubaToys specifically asking if they could still do annual service on my old Poseidon (I included the model number) regulator. 5/28/2019: I received the following response from Joe Johnson: "We can but the parts are close to $100 for that reg." (This was a lie - see below.) 6/3/2019: They received my regulator. 6/19/2019 - (2 weeks / 2 days later): Since their regulator repair form says: "Please allow 10-14 business days upon receipt for annual service work to be completed." I called to check on my regulator. Sandy told me that they get busy this time of year so it would be "another week to week and a half" before they would be shipping my regulator back to me. (This was a lie - see below.) 7/10/2019 - (3 weeks later): I called to find out where my regulaor was. Sandy told me "Let me check and I'll call you back." (This was a lie. She never called back.) 7/11/2019 - (1 day later): I called back to find out why Sandy never called me back. She said that my regulator was due back to them the next day and it would be "shipping tomorrow". (This was a lie. See below.) 7/15/2019 - (4 days later): I called back to make sure my regulator had indeed shipped on the 12th. Sandy gets on the phone and informs me that the regulator hasn't shipped yet and that they couldn't service the 2nd stage because of parts availability so they only serviced the first stage and that it would "ship tomorrow." 7/16/2019 - (1 day later): My regulator finally shipped. 6 weeks and 1 day and $151 later I have a regulator that I can't use because they didn't service both stages the way Joe Johnson told me they would when I first contacted them. Reasonable customer service would dictate that if you can't service both stages you call the customer and ask them if they still want the other stage serviced. Customer service is obviously not their strong suit, but lying obviously is. If you want your regulator serviced by a bunch of used car salesman have at it. I never will again. read more

A nice option for trying on gear! Lots of wetsuits, and masks so you can try on gear, and make sure you can fit. Tons of swag & T shirts as well! They also do classes, and have an indoor pool. I did not check to see if they charge for testing your own equipment. I got my SCUBA certification at ScubaToys in 2001. I did not dive for a while, and lost my card along the way. When I went to dive again, the Dive Shops wanted to see my card, and I forgot which agency certified me. I only remembered I got certified at ScubaToys because I still have their name on my mask band. I called ScubaToys and spoke with Rick. He actually kept all his files, including students in 2001! He was able to give me the information I needed to get back in the water! I am very impressed by how organized this shop is, and I highly recommend them to anyone in the Dallas area!! read more

Got my certification a month ago. The instructors Jeff and Sean did a great job and made me feel comfortable. You spend one weekend at the Scuba Toys location and another weekend at a lake in Terrell. I just got back from Cozumel where I went ahead and got my Advanced certification. My instructor in Cozumel said my instructors did a great job. Just understand you are getting your certification to go awesome places. Diving in a lake is not going to be near as fun as tropical places. Also you can join their club and get 10% off products for sale. read more

It is a huge store with all scuba equipment you can think of. There were too many wet suits and everything else for me to look through them all. Pros: Huge selection, I also heard there was a pool where you can actually try on a suit in the water. Cons: Since it is a huge store, you cannot really shop without someone's guidance. Someone eventually helped me and he was very knowledgeable and nice, but it took him some time to come by. read more

My wife and I just recently married and moved to Texas. We had no friends here and wanted to start a new hobby. She is flight attendant and I am still trying to get into medschool, in other words money is an issue. From signing up for the class to every visit I had no less than 5+ star experience. It is a family run business and it feels like being part of a big family. My wifes schedule is crazy but they were flexible with doing pool classes and the lake dive months apart to make sure we can make it and enjoy it. Staff's knowledge is very helpful in selecting the best gear for you, not the most expensive. Their goal is not to empty your pockets but to win your loyalty with hard work. Regarding classes, they are very helpful. After my certification I had no problem renting gear and going on a dive with just my wife and no instructor, thats how prepared I felt! Best dive shop ever. Got my girlfriend certified (at a shop closer to home) and needed to get her geared out. This place probably has the biggest selection in the metroplex. We walked in and a friendly gentleman greeted us and we told him what we needed. Started with the wetsuit. He picked a perfect one on the first try. Next we needed booties and fins. Her foot is midget sized so that took some work. Ended up getting her kids size. Fins were cake. BCD took maybe 10 minutes to find one that fit well. Went with a scubapro that he found on sale. Sweet. We didn't get her a reg since I have plenty of extras. Check out process was a breeze. No issues. Definitely check this place out if you need gear. read more

My Fiancee and I went to Scuba Toy's after having a not so great experience with another Scuba shop in town. I was blown away at the level of customer service, enormous inventory, and all the employees passion for diving. Also the company is family owned and the owner recently bought out his partner because the partner ran the business with very little integrity, and the new owner truly cares about his customer and maintaining a family atmosphere for his employees. Lastly we spoke with Chip for about 45 minutes, and were very impressed with his knowledge of diving and the product knowledge. He will be the first one to tell you whether or not a product is right for you and whether or not you should spend too much money on something you really don't need, even if you were wanting to buy it! He also gave us a great discount since we were about to get married and had such a bad experience at the last scuba shop! Highly recommend!!! read more

5* Prices, Sales, and Service team. 1* Execution. Everyone I've talked to at ScubaToys (both online and over the phone) has been knowledgeable when needed, and extremely kind. Additionally, they were as helpful as they could be each time I called. Here's what happened: I ordered a gear package from them which included their custom Zeagle BC, the Brigade. Zeagle dropped the ball hard and failed to fulfill this order for about 6 weeks. As ScubaToys had no control over this, I am giving them a pass on the delay in fulfilling my order. That said, I emailed the representative on the sales side that I worked with for updates before I knew that Zeagle was the problem and never received a response. After 3 weeks of non-response via email, I called since it very much seemed that I didn't matter once the shop had my money. The woman I spoke to was incredibly nice and apologetic for the ordeal, and promised to have the product manager call me back the next morning when he was back in the shop. I never received a call. I called again a few days later and was finally put in touch with the product manager who said he would call Zeagle and figure out the problem since all the other components of my rig were in the store and ready to go. He informed me that I would receive a call back from him once he heard from Zeagle. After a few days of not hearing anything, I called the store again and was told that Zeagle had a processing delay due to moving distribution centers but that things were moving and the BC would arrive in a week or so. Also, I was surprised that no offer of concession was made as a result of these problems. I proceeded to email Joey weekly for the next 3 weeks for status updates. The order was finally shipped 8 weeks after order. I did a quick inspection of the order once I returned from a trip and everything appeared in order. This past weekend, I broke out the gear and rigged it up for my first dive. Everything functioned great and the BC was excellent. However, I discovered that the computer/SPG I ordered (Oceanic ProPlus 3) was not the exact model I ordered and paid for. The computer that was sent to me did not have a quick disconnect cable fitted to it. I have recently contacted the shop about this. I will certainly change my rating to 4*+ if this final problem is resolved quickly and efficiently. TL;DR Order fulfillment was a serious problem and the delays were awful to deal with. Working with ScubaToys was the most effort I have ever had to put in to fix a problem that was not caused by me. That said, when I could get in touch with the shop, everyone was very helpful and understanding. I was treated as well as I've ever been treated at the point of contact. There was a portion of my order that was incorrectly filled and needs correcting. As the majority of the problems we had were not caused by ScubaToys, I will update this review to a far more positive rating once my problem is resolved quickly and satisfactorily. read more

Two years ago my 14 year old son and I took our Open Water Certification at Scuba Toys in Carrollton. Greg Williams and his wife taught us and they are FANTASTIC instructors, and the lake trip with Steele was not too bad regardless of the fact it was 40 degrees air temp and 50 degrees water temp in November 2014. We had an incredible trip diving in Brisbane, Australia. Then last month my husband took the same class with Greg and was a bit nervous but Greg was awesome doing the pool work with him and Miles was also incredibly patient and my husband passed! My teenage son and I also took a refresher course several weeks ago before going to Cancun/Cozumel and Greg was again an awesome instructor. read more

Prepping for a recent dive trip I realized within a week of leaving my 5mil wet suit no longer fit. Scuba Toys shipped me two sizes since I was unsure. They only charged me for one knowing I would have to return one. They truly went the extra mile to help me. I have had only the best experience at this store. Staff is extremely helpful! They give you all the information to make an informed decision on your purchases, this can be an expensive hobby so for those out there that only want the cheapest products will probably regret not listening to the staff at Scuba Toys. They give you real advise on what is needed and what is not needed even if that means they do not upgrade your sale. This has happened to us several times and we are very thankful for the advice. We will be long time customer since we have first hand experience with the amazing customer service, the knowledge we receive from the staff is top notch! Instructors: I am a 54 year old woman who really wanted to be certified to scuba dive but had some anxiety when I started the lake dive, it did take me several times to become certified. This was my comfort level only, all the instructors I have had the pleasure of meeting and learning from have been the most patient, positive and knowledgeable instructors I would not have been able to be a certified without this staff. I am now a certified diver and am so excited to enjoy the underwater world of the clear blue water during vacations. I was able to rent a scuba dive camera from this shop. I had to provide my own SD card (to store the pictures and videos). Here is the timeline of events that I recommend to follow to get the most out of your digital camera rental: A day before you are picking up the camera, call the shop and tell them to charge the camera's battery. On the day you pick up the camera, bring with you your personal SD memory card. Have them help you install it and show you how it plugs in to charge and everything. Have them show you how to take pictures and video with it. Make sure there are batteries (AA) provided by the shop, for the external flash. Ask questions about using it, opening/closing it, the warranty, how to handle it, their policy, etc. Next, be sure on your own to read the instruction manual; you can learn a lot about taking better underwater photos by using some pre-set modes. Conclusion: The staff is friendly and helpful. Ask questions beforehand to make sure you get all your bases covered, as this shop is busy. Take care of your equipment rentals and return it on time. The staff here will help over the phone or in person when you have issues or questions - don't give up! Camera rental was for a SeaLife underwater digital camera with external flash. Waterproof (dive-proof) case included (and the camera itself was waterproof too). read more

My experience at Scuba Toys is a case study on how NOT to run a business. My husband and I booked an open water certification course 6 weeks in advance and were told that any medical conditions listed on the NAUI paperwork required a doctor's evaluation and signature on a medical release waiver. One of those conditions applied to me, a childhood asthma diagnosis. I went to my doctor and got a full physical. I am in excellent physical condition, don't take any daily control meds, and haven't had any asthma-related episodes in more than two decades, so based on my medical history my doctor cleared me for diving. My husband and I spent nearly $400 in required equipment from Scuba Toys, then spent several hours at home on the course work and written exam that we were instructed to complete before the first day of class. We showed for the first day of our open water class where myself and another gentleman were pulled outside the classroom because our medical releases both had asthma on them. I was told that my doctor's approval was not sufficient and I would not be allowed to participate in the class until I visited a particular pulmonologist in downtown Dallas who is affiliated with the Diver Alert Network. I was essentially kicked out of the class because no one told me this information before the first day of the course. The other gentleman was allowed to stay for reasons unknown to me. I was incredibly disappointed, angry, and embarrassed by this confrontation. Later, I called the pulmonologist's office to make an appointment. I was told the first available appointment was 4 weeks away and that all the tests they were going to do (chest x-ray, breathing treatments, stress test, etc) would not be covered by my medical insurance and would cost me several hundred dollars. I found this entirely unacceptable. My husband and I went back to Scuba Toys the same day to try and get a refund for the class since they weren't going to let me participate and their doctor requirement was unworkable. We asked to speak to the manager and were directed to Joe. I told him about the situation, that I didn't understand why this extra requirement was being imposed by the shop since it's not a part of the NAUI certification requirements, and that if they would not accept my doctor's release then we would have to get a refund. Joe told us that he would give us a refund if we were "going to be shitty about it" but that first he would call my doctor to verify that he is qualified to sign the medical waiver. Also, if we went the refund route he said he would have to deduct the cost of the course materials because we'd already written in our workbooks and completed the test as we were instructed to do before the first day of class. Of course had I known ahead of time that my doctor release would not be accepted I wouldn't have written in them. I warned my doctor that Joe was hostile to us and would be contacting him. My doctor said that he would not waste any time arguing his credentials with Joe and that HIPAA regulations would keep him from giving Joe any information about my medical history. Joe said he would call me with an update the next day, but he didn't. I left a message with a front desk employee requesting that Joe call me back the next day. No phone call. Finally, I decided I'd had enough of these shenanigans and went up to the shop to demand a full refund. This time, however, Joe's attitude and demeanor seemed to have undergone a complete 180. He said that he'd spoken to the shop's insurance providers, his lawyer, and the NAUI certification board who had all informed him that he could not make a determination on which doctors were qualified to sign the medical release form. He also brought up the other gentleman who was allowed to stay in class and said that our situation should not have been treated differently than that gentleman's. He apologized for the way things had been handled by his dive instructors but didn't apologize for cursing at us in our first meeting. The only recompense we were offered was two private classes with a different instructor on the weekday evenings leading up to the lake weekend so that we could re-join the original class. We decided to do that, if only to get the bad experience over with and not lose the workbook cost. We spent four of the next five days with the instructor for the pool and lake portions of the class. The instructor was awesome and we had no problems with him whatsoever. Based on our experience I will not spend another dime at Scuba Toys, which is unfortunate for them. Due to their arbitrary, undocumented rules and the manager's horrible treatment of us, they've lost two dual income, no kids customers for life. read more

Went it on a Thursday afternoon looking to do some scuba diving. Didn't know anything about it. Figured i would walk in and inquire about the classes they offered. Its a family own business and it shows. The employees we dealt with didn't really know much about scuba diving and couldn't answer our basic questions. Their only concern was making the sale. Which they did. Costed me and my wife about $650 dollars for the lessons and training material to read over. Lessons were for two weekends, Saturday and Sunday, with one weekend taking place at the class and pool, and the other at a lake in Terrell TX. Which they advised isn't too clear or visible. Which made us wonder well what was the point of going there, if you cant see? But regardless we followed through. We decided upon the following weekend, because the sales people assured us that we would be well prepared for the class and would have no problem going through the course material. We get home, they forget to send us the training material link. So we lose a day to study, we have to call them back to get them to send the link to the e-book and course assignments. They finally do, and we soon realize this is going to take much longer than expected. We are both college students and accustomed to studying and assignments, and this was far too much to read and comprehend in less than a weeks time. So we call and inquire about hour options. We asked about the refund policy and the sales person literally laughed over the phone. That sort or professionalism accurately speaks volumes to the type of company Scuba Toys is.
