Whenever I am out of town I pick up whatever free weekly publication is available and refer to it for the skinny on arts and entertainment events. Newcity, a free news and arts weekly, is one of the last local papers published here in Chicago, and has been published every week for about twenty years. With so many titles owned and edited by large national companies, Newcity's quiet and consistent coverage of what's really going in our fine town is always a pleasure to read. Their gallery section is the most comprehensive in the city, and their film reviews are always top notch. They also publish supplemental titles, including Boutiqueville, an overview of Chicago's independent fashion scene, and Best of Chicago, their oft-imitated- never-duplicated annual manual. (aka the police blotter) They went from a full- to half-broadsheet fairly recently. A good choice considering there wasn't enough content to warrant this oversized, awkward format. I gave the paper 5 stars because I believe in what they are doing but I really think the writing skills are lacking and as a past copyeditor -- there are tons of mistakes! But what can you do!
