Reasonable kayak rentals out of a slightly-dusty marine shop…read more This place isn't on the water --- kayak rentals involve a guy with a pickup driving your kayak to the shore, with you following. At the end of your adventure (about 10 minutes before you're done), call the shop from your cell phone and the guy will bring the pickup back to collect the kayak. This whole system worked better than I expected. I got a single kayak --- a quite reasonable Perception Swifty 9.5 sit-inside in good repair. The basic aluminum-and-plastic paddle was nothing special, but in reasonable repair. They also do tandem kayaks, small motorboats, and very small sailboats (Sunfish). The marine shop is a little dusty, and looks to do lots of outboard motor repairs.

Great value for boat rental. We rented a 19 foot boat for a full day on the weekend for $350. Boat…read morewas about 15 years old so nothing fancy (no AC outlet or radio), but boat itself was in good shape, functioned well and we had a fantastic day in the harbor. Note to boat renters: the shop does not use credit cards except for boat rentals, and required a $2000 authorization that it appears they ran through an old computer in the back office, so we initially had issues with finding a credit card that their system would not decline. Just be aware that this can take a significant amount of time even if your credit cards have never had issues previously, and they don't take AmEx. As mentioned in the previous post, the rental shop itself was not on the water, but was an easy 5 minute drive with the shop bringing the boat on a trailer and then picking it up at the end of the day with a stop by the gas station on the way back to the shop to top if off that the customer pays (very economical, only went through 12 gallons of gas). The shop requires that someone in party is an experienced boater and they take you out on 5 minute test drive before letting you go. Even though we were never in shallow water and convinced we didn't run into or over anything, there were some dings in the propellor noted at the end of our trip. Steve verified that that they could have been there prior to our trip, and was honest in not charging us for them. If you are fine with a more social (we got to know Steve quite well) while not the most streamlined renting experience, then good bargain!

Great Captain with customer-oriented service and extensive knowledge on fishing (local and…read moreinternational) I have been fishing with Jason for a number of years and consistently go back to him for winter flounder in the spring and early summer up in Quincy and then follow him in August to Westport, MA for stripers, fluke, sea bass and tautog. Jason is very customer-oriented in his service. (Hopefully you like his sense of humor! ) As an example, Jay will occasionally decide to do some "exploratory trips" early in the season and invite some regulars. Once the season starts up, he may also decide to do some early am striper fishing before the regular 6 am. trip. Again he'll invite regulars occasionally to join him for free! When I wanted to go fishing this year down in NC, Jason put me in touch with a fishing buddy of his who had moved down there from Long Island, NY. I had a great time which couldn't have happened without Jay's help. So, here's a captain who's the best flounder captain in the area (his boat has had the largest flounder caught in MA for something like 9 of the past 10 years) who not only has a very fair charter rate but also offers open boat trips. Jay offers Tuesday and Thursday open boat trips in Quincy so that customers who can't afford to charter a boat can reserve a spot and just pay for themselves. You'll find that Jason has quite a number of regulars, some of whom book every Thursday trip in the best months. Thursday open boat trips are available after moving to Westport in August. In 2013, I was with Jason when he caught the largest tautog for MA: 14 3/4 lbs, length = 30 inches & Girth = 21 as measured at the Westport Marina. (picture attached) Check out the article in On The Water magazine by Ron Powers who was also on the boat with us. Jason is very understated in his manner but if you Google his name and On The Water magazine you'll get to read about the number of 50# stripers he's caught as well as his extensive experience in the fishing industry. As you start the last hour or so of fishing, Jason will start the filleting. Wait 'til you see this poetry in motion. Jason was a professional fish cutter so you will see something unusual when he breaks out his cutting board and knives. The only caveat I have is that Jason is very fishing oriented so his boat is set up the same way, no creature comforts. Women, be warned, no head on board. But, as the trips are 5 hours this usually doesn't present any problems. You can bring your own equipment or just bring your drinks and such and use Jason's set ups. So, if your new to the area or just eager to be fishing with an excellent fisherman and guide, do yourself a favor and book a trip!

The class had just the right mix of some classroom and theory instruction along with a majority of our time spent on the water. I appreciate how much we repeatedly practiced the important and practical skills needed to operate a sailboat under power, including docking, standing turns, fueling, and more. We were also fortunate that our instructor, Captain Dave Pelkey, was in possession of vast sailing knowledge and experience, which he shared often, explaining the reasons behind everything we were doing, not only how to do it. I recommend the school to anyone seeking to increase their sailing knowledge and to get an ASA certification.

The typical government organization experience: Bad customer service, a can't-be-bothered attitude,…read morealong with pointless and cumbersome processes. I left hoping I wouldn't have to return for a long time. Long story short, if you have to go here... look over the required items carefully and mentally prepare for a crappy experience. Essentially, this place serves the same role as the Registry of Motor Vehicles, just for boats, ATVs, and snowmobiles. Why they don't just combine the two roles and save the state some money is beyond me. I recently went here, after buying my first boat, to register it and change the title. I used the Mass. Environmental Police's website to check that I had what I needed, apparently I missed an item. In addition, I needed to go to a notary certify a change on one of the papers. The missing item... the sales tax I paid on the boat, a week prior. That's right, the Commonwealth of Massachusetts couldn't figure out a way to look up the sales tax I paid to... the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, unless it was by me printing out a receipt at home and hand carrying it to them. Genius! As for the notary, how tough is it to have a list of local notaries for the customer to go to. I am sure they turn people away daily for these items, and they never bother to improve the process... why, cause "it's not my job." Eventually got the boat registered, but as I left that day I heard a customer ask, "How often do these go right the first time?" She chuckled as she said, "Not many!" That should tell you a lot.
