It rained the next morning, I drove down to see him from the Yard and within four hours he got it all squared away. Everyone I met in their yard that rainy morning treated me with respect which is more than I can say for most boat mechanics who typically talk down to me because I am a woman. Now enjoying the entire Summer on the Bay rather than waiting for one of the other boat yards to return a call, thanks to his help. He was up front and honest with me about the pros and cons of the boat, and made sure that I realized it was a true fishing boat. Skip and his team went out of their way to make my buying experience easy. From the survey and sea trial to the delivery he worked with me and my wife to ensure we were informed and answered any and all questions that you would expect from first time boat owners like us. The delivery was a chance for me to help pilot the boat from its home port to my mooring. Skip had his son go along with me to coach and guide me on the voyage. It was a great trip and I really appreciated the help. We will definitely look to Skip and his team to help us once we graduate from our current boat to a bigger one.

My wife and I have recently developed an interest in sailing as a way to travel and vacation in…read moredifferent parts of the world and after doing some research on the numerous ASA schools, we decided to go with Swain Sailing in the BVI. Their description of the Fast Track to Bareboating course sounded exactly like what we were looking for so we signed up for the course and began studying the text books. We arrived in Tortola prepared to take the exams, but they day before the course was scheduled to begin Gina Swain sent an email informing me that the first day of the ASA101 course had been cancelled because they didn't have any instructors available. For those who aren't aware, Swain advertises the ASA101 as a 2 day introduction to the basics of sailing and time is split between classroom and putting the concepts into practice on a IC24 keelboat. Gina assured me the ASA101 course could instead be taken on the larger live aboard boat the day before the 103/104 portion began. The following morning we arrived at the marina and waited for 6 hours for our instructor to arrive. When he did, we realized he was an independent local boat captain and not affiliated with Swain Sailing. After fueling the boat, we left the harbor at 4pm and returned at 6pm which condensed our 2 day ASA101 course to a 2 hour sail aboard a 45' monohull with a self tacking jib. The following morning we left on the ASA103/104 portion of the course and quickly noticed there were almost no chart plotting tools on board. No plotter, no parallel rules, no hand held compass and the only nautical chart on board didn't include most of the destinations we were planning to sail to. The teaching style of our instructor was very much 'hands off' and when he heard I work in the aviation field, he asked me to teach my wife the navigation portion of the course (plotting a course, depth soundings, lat/long coordinates, measuring distance, lines of position, dead reckoning, etc.). We were also required to pay for fuel and water that was clearly listed as included items in the price of the course. After completing the live aboard course for ASA103/104 we brokered our own boat through Swain and after spending 2 weeks in the BVI, I still haven't met anyone from the Swain Sailing School. I tried contacting Gina Swain with my concerns, but she has refused to respond or acknowledge me in any way. If you're just interested in taking a ride on a sailboat Swain may be an option, but to consider this a legitimate sailing school is a bit ridiculous. If you're searching for a school that teaches the proper way to sail I would suggest looking elsewhere.

Just finished (and Passed!!) ASA 101, 103 and 104 in the BVIs. The Swain Sailing program is run…read moreseamlessly - 2 days of day sailing and instruction on a 24' keelboat before heading out for 6 days on a 46' Bavaria monohull. We had fairly big winds all week, which I learned to feel confident sailing in. Mike, the Instructor/Captain made sure that i learned how to do everything on board - and then actually do it. Over the course of the week I was given more and more responsibility for skippering the boat. There was the perfect amount of sailing and instructional time - with a little Caribbean Free Time at the end of each day. It couldn't have been better. A HUGE Thank you to everyone involved.

The Weaver Cove boat ramp in the Melville Marina District is simply the best for launching kayaks,…read moreboats, and other watercraft to explore the most scenic section of Narragansett Bay. Ample parking. Trash facilities. Great map/info on Rhode Island's "Blue Ways" with suggested padding routes. Striking distance to small islands like Dyer and Prudence. Lovely view of Newport's Pell Bridge to the left and the Mt. Hope bridge to the right. Also a fantastic starting point for more experienced paddlers and boaters to go across the bay for a delightful lunch in Wickford, etc. We didn't end up kayaking very far - once we reached Dyer island we hung out on the rocky shore for the afternoon just watching the endless parade of sailboats coming through. A perfect summer afternoon. Gripes? Not that easy to find - signage isn't great. No bathroom facilities.
