The Scottish Liberal Democrats are one of the major political parties in Scotland. Until 2007, the party was in a coalition government with the Scottish Labour party and currently has the second highest amount of MPs in Scotland. The party is led by Tavish Scott who decided not to lead the party into a further coalition with the SNP over the issue of an independence referendum.
The party (known informally as the Lib Dems) believe in an Untied Kingdom which is structured in a federal way and therefore is a strong supporter of further powers being devolved to the Scottish parliament, albeit to some extent. The party models itself as the party that wants modern reform throughout British politics, including voting reform.
In Scotland, the party is especially strong in the more rural parts of Scotland including those in the Highlands, Caithness, Grampian and North East Fife. This to me seems quite an interesting fact as the Liberals usually find more support in the modern cities through younger voters.
After entering in the coalition at Westminster the party is preparing for a backlash amongst Scottish voters in next years election. read more
