Stump's Decks & Porches

Stump's Decks & Porches

I'm very picky so I got 4 estimates. Stump's had the lowest price out of all 4. I paid $21,000. The…read moreother guys were quoting me $25-31k. I live in a very well to do neighborhood and unfortunately, these guys will look up house values and charge accordingly so while some neighborhoods will get $10k decks, not mine. If I was living in DC suburbs then they'd charge us $50k for the deck. I got the PVC Aztek material with metal posts. The guys did the job in 2 days. I was worried when I saw scuffs on my new deck the day after install, but Luke came to buff them out. With Aztek, you have to be very careful about scratching the deck with furniture so I've yet to put anything on my deck! We rarely eat out there anyways. We're not outdoorsy people.

In both solidity of structure and also presentation. The workers were pleasant, tidy, cleaned up each day, and assisted working through some unknowns that cropped up. I used high quality lighting, and porch rail which included a flat top for drinks, and also LED lighted from underneath. I am not prone to writing reviews, generally, but where work is especially good it should be acknowledged so their business can expand. The design and quote phase introduced some new ideas to my intentions. Kevin, MIcah, and Jose did a great job on-site. Based on the back deck/porch experience I am considering a front porch overhaul as well.

First time using this company. Phone calls were returned very promptly. Working with Robert was…read morepleasant; he explained the process in depth and was able to show me multiple photos of projects he completed in the past. Our biggest obstacle was the weather. It was difficult for him to find enough dry days in a row to complete the staining of our deck. His crew arrived on time and were very polite and pleasant. Two workers arrived at 1:30 pm and began prepping the deck (it had been pressure washed a couple weeks prior); more workers (2 or 3) arrived about 45 minutes later. By 4:30 pm they were done...which is where my concern came in. We have a pretty big deck, with a lattice covered arbor, and I am not convinced they applied two coats (as promised) in such a short time. When they arrived, I questioned the information Robert had given me saying that both coats would be applied in the same day, with minimal drying time in between coats. The worker confirmed this, saying the product was a "wet coat" product. When I checked the information on the back of the can they left for touch ups, the directions indicated you could re-coat in two hours. The size of our deck, combined with the minimal amount of time the workers were on site, makes me doubt that the entire deck received two coats, as contracted. I did contact them to discuss and was told that yes, they did do two coats on the whole deck. I was told that their experience allows them to complete a project of this size in such a limited amount of time. The finished product looks good, however there are some areas that are shinier than others. Also, the deck overall has a sticky feel when you walk on it. I was told this should go away in a few weeks to months, but to contact them for resolution if it does not. My overall experience allows me to recommend this company. I would, however, watch the workers carefully to make sure the project is completed as contracted.

Tell me the boards are there, but delivery won't be for another 2 weeks, which means 2+ weeks in reality. Nope, not gonna happen. I hired Ted Locker Sea& n McGrory to rebuild my deck In late summer 2024, I noticed that Locker was…read moreworking across the court from my home & asked him if he could rebuild a deck. He told me he could & that he had been a councilman & was familiar with Upper Providence Township Inspections Officer.I told him I wanted everything the same as on the original deck with the exception that the under supporting boards be spaced apart to allow water to flow through them; as I had been told that water had gotten between boards & corrupted on my original deck. I pointed out one of my neighbors decks & he told me he knew what I wanted. He created a handwritten quote, which I told him needed to be revised to reflect what we had discussed. He returned with a rewritten quote specifying which reflected the spaced underboards, but he had only brought one copy. I signed the copy and he promised to bring me a copy agreement I had signed. I believed him. Locker informed me that I would need a permit, which had not been needed in 2004 when I had replaced my deck the first time. I asked him when would the building inspector be out to inspect the deck as I wanted my monies worth for the inspection. Locker told me that he would be out at the beginning and at the end. The day Locker began the work I had a doctor's appointment & left for the better part of the day. He did not have the promised copy of the agreement nor did the inspector stop by. I also noticed that one of my boards against my home had been ripped off. I asked Locker about it & he told me that I didn't need it. I told him he should not have ripped it off & should have left it. I asked him if he was going to replace the exposed wood & he replied that it was not in the contract to replace the board he ripped off. I asked him for my copy of the signed agreement & he told me that I had a copy of it. I told him that I did not have a copy of the agreement as he had not given it to me & asked that he bring the copy the next day. He did not bring the copy the next day, but promised me he would give me the copy also claiming that I had a copy o f it. Again, Locker never gave me a copy of the agreement. Locker spent a total of 3.5 days working on my deck. I noticed that there many of the pieces of lumber had not been cut equally or flush. I addressed this & again he replied that it was not in the contract. I asked him again for a copy of the agreement & he told me I had a copy of the contract. On the third day I called the township to ask when the inspector would be out & I was asked 'Has the work been started'...! I was shocked. Locker had NEVER called the township to inform them that he had started the work. I informed Locker who was speechless. Still believing that Locker would do the right thing, I gave me the second check. The last day of Locker's work, I inspected Locker's work more thoroughly. I realized that he had reconfigured the railing without my consent. I also touched a small piece of wood that seemed to sitting on the deck board & it fell off. The entire piece of wood had not been cut properly & a small piece just lie on the board. I showed this to Locker & he had his grandson climb the ladder & glue the wood to the deck. I told him you can't simply glue a deck together & he told me he was using carpenters glue & it would hold up. (What other areas have been glued?) On the last day, I still did not have a copy of the agreement, the inspector had never shown up, & Locker was still claiming that he had done quality work. I asked him for a copy of the agreement & he asked me for the third check. Locker stayed outside my front door knocking for an hour while I was on the phone with my doctor's office. When I got off the phone, Locker asked for the third & final check & I asked him when the inspector be out & where was my copy of the agreement. Locker told me that I would get the copy of the agreement after I paid him. I called the police because Locker would not leave. By the time the police came, Locker had left. The following day, the inspector came to my home, he had told Locker to put washers under a miscut supporting beam & considered the deck acceptable. When I met the township inspector he turned out to be the most egregiously nasty individual I had ever trusted. I do feel that since the township approved the sloppy work on my deck, they should be liable for the work; but that, naturally will never happen. Take a look at the photos & tell me that your township building inspector would approve this work! I thought that home owners could expect quality, but not in Montgomery County Pennsylvania! This monster was awarded his last payment in district court, then when I appealed it. I would like to see each of those attorneys accept the quality of work Locker performed on my home. I have learned a lot from this egregious nightmarish experience. Ted Locker fabricates with impunity and should be avoided.
