Whenever I stop to pick up a roast chicken just a few doors away, I usually pop into Otto's and do a little bit of shopping. It's a really, really spectacularly clean store, with lots of display space, which surprised me a little bit before I went in for the first time. Being a complete carnivore, I often grab a few steaks to tide me over for the week. I can tell you that the steaks are thick and juicy. I don't know where they get their dead cow from, but I reckon they're awesome. Big, tender porterhouse with home made mushroom sauce. God, I get hungry just thinking about it. You'll find pretty much everything you need, meat-wise at Otto's. Oh, and the service is pretty damn good, too.

Walking into the South Melbourne Market you will be inundated with fresh fruit, veggies and meat, but I would definitely recommend Theo's as my favourite for the best quality meat at the lowest price. If you are looking to save even further try heading to the market at around 2pm - 3pm, right before the stalls close they often discount their produce rather heavily in an attempt to sell it rather than have to throw it away.

Bertie's, on the other hand, is different. Bertie's is more like a speciality food store - championing the 'paddock to plate' cause. They use free range meat and butcher the entire carcass - which means you can literally pick any cut you like and ask for help on how to prepare it. The same amount of thought is given to the condiments and accompanying food and booze - all very high quality and appear to be from local or speciality producers. What keeps me coming back though is their lunch offering. They make a daily selection of salads, usually vegetarian, but you can select a freshly cooked meat to add as accompaniment like pulled pork, roast turkey or lamb. In winter, they make deliciously rich soups that you almost need a knife and fork for.
