Imagine being so insecure in your position as a manager that you make your employees feel like they have to walk on eggshells just to get through a shift without upsetting you. A team is only as strong as its leadership, and unfortunately, Scooters in Anniston, AL, is a perfect example of what happens when management fails.
Let me make one thing VERY clear: No employee should have to work in fear of upsetting their manager, only to end up being fired because that manager's pride was hurt. Retaliation is not leadership. Intimidation is not leadership. And using your position of authority to punish employees because you can't separate your personal feelings from your professional responsibilities is absolutely unacceptable.
A good manager builds their team up, communicates professionally, and creates an environment where people feel respected--not an environment where everyone is constantly worried about what might set them off.
If employees are afraid to speak up, if they feel targeted for having a difference of opinion, and if their jobs are put at risk because management takes things personally, then maybe the problem isn't the employees. Maybe it's the person in charge.
Scooters deserves better leadership, and its employees deserve to be treated with basic respect. Do better, Sandra Layton. Being a manager is about more than having a title and the power to fire people. It's about how you treat the people who work for you--and right now, that deserves some serious reflection. read more
