I adore the Christmas markets! I mean, I did just recently plan a whole vacation around hitting as many as possible. And, for me, that means that Munich MUST be involved. I know, I know, that Nurnberg has the big one, but Nurnberg in general has nothing on Munich.
Years ago I spent my junior year in college in Munich and spent a lot of time in Munich. I'm so glad I did, because otherwise I might not have discovered (and remembered) this Christkindlmarkt. Schwabing is the artsy part of Munich and its Christkindlmarkt reflects that. Along with the traditional offerings (food, gluhwein, ornaments, etc.) there are quite a few vendors with artistic wares. On my most recent visit I found a fun glass ring and a beautiful silver necklace. There was even a stand full of live mistletoe - it was gorgeous. And, it seemed to be less crowded this time around than the main market at Marienplatz (which was insanely packed full of people). There are even some lovely cafes nearby if you're looking for a sit-down snack.
The market is easy to find - just off the Munchner Freiheit U-Bahn stop. While everyone should experience the big market at Marienplatz, this market is also a must-see on my list. read more
