Real Ice Cream. Tons of Flavors. That's really all you need to know. No samples, but you'll be fine. You can get a split cup and they do bonus mini scoops so plenty of options to try lots of great unique flavors. Clean, setting, indoors and out, pleasant young people working. The staff here are incredible! Always have great recommendations and I get fresh waffle cones. The sherbet is my favorite and the chocolate based ones. The "extra credit" (free little scoop to try) is always fun and all the flavors I have tried are unbelievably creamy and delicious. Such a fun interior and they even have an ice cream challenge! Such a special place. The Schoolhouse Scoop is perfect for families and young children all things happy and fun. We've been customers for YEARS and YEARS and never had a bad experience. NOT ONCE! The scoop team is terrific. Friendly, fast, and wonderful with small kids and the young at heart. The ice cream is perfect too. Excellent selection served at the perfect temperature. It's nice and cool outside and there's seating outside too. I adore the historic building location...even the bathroom down the hall is neato keen! The little "extra credit" scoop makes me giggle. Such whimsy! Such a delight! read more

Hubs wanted some ice cream and this is the closest place that isn't Culver's or DQ (not that those are bad!) Hadn't tried them before and lo and behold, we happened to go on National Ice Cream Day. There was a short line, but it didn't take too long. I did feel for the 2 employees having to hold down the entire store, but they kept people moving at a good clip. The place is built where the old middle school used to be so they have little throwbacks to school. The scoop sizes are all levels of school (elementary, Jr. High, HS, and Collegiate) and they even give you "extra credit", a small scoop of another flavor on the top, a la Izzy's. Fun flavors and an extra plus that they had my favorite (Blue Moon, although theirs was called Playdough as it also had cookie dough bites mixed in). Something that would satisfy any sweet tooth! read more

Ice cream season is upon us!!! Schoolhouse scoop in Hastings is a solid choice. They had over 20 flavors to choose from. They offer a range of sizes and types of ice cream. It has a whimsical bright vibe inside with seating. Plus they offer some tables outside! Small detail but the cups and spoons were very flimsy. It was hard to scoop bites without breaking the spoon. For a single dish you get one scoop plus "extra credit" aka a mini scoop on top. This way you get two flavors! Love this idea. read more

I love everything related to ice cream so I had to stop here. It's 100% worth it as it's delicious. They have so many flavors you'll be going bonkers on what to choose. You really can't go wrong with any flavor. We order shakes and they do take some time but we'll worth the expert craftsmanship. The vibe is also a bit retro so take some selfies. read more

This place is such a treat, I mean literally. This was my first time visiting and I will definitely return especially when I need to satisfy my sweet tooth. We ordered the Butter brickle, and they gave a small surprise scoop brownie s'mores. And I had the rainbow sherbet with the dragon fruit and it was wonderful. We stopped here late on a Saturday and there was still a line out front. Due to Covid, they only allow 5 people in the store at a time with no inside seating. They did have several tables out front to sit at if you would like. They had very good ice cream and a large variety of flavors to choose from. They even throw in a bonus tiny scoop of any flavor as a sample to see if you would have liked your second choice. We have driven by here several times saying we should stop and this time we did. We are happy that we did. They have all of the flavors listed on the glass out front so you can have your selection ready when you enter the store. It was fast and tasted great! Enjoy!! read more

Schoolhouse Scoop is our go to for good hand dipped ice cream. So many flavors it's hard to choose. I usually get something that will pair nicely with hot fudge. Last visit I was sitting outside in the sunshine at one of many of their tables when I see a little guy come out with a monster waffle cone filled with huge scoops of ice cream! I thought that was great! Can't decide on one flavor? You can get a little scoop on top called an extra credit. Schoolhouse Scoops is a credit to Hastings. read more

The ice cream at this place is soooo good. I ended up getting the Shipwreck flavor which is vanilla ice cream with salted caramel swirls and candied almond splinters. The whole place has a really cute schoolhouse theme and I really enjoyed the "extra credit". My only suggests are 1) Have a "menu" of your flavors available in the store so customers know what's in all the ice cream. I found myself asking over and over what's in the "shipwreck", what's in the "Pirates Booty", etc. I did find out later on that they list their flavors online. AND 2) Give me a smaller option. I asked for one scoop and it was HUGE...I don't know how anyone can pound down more than one. It would have been nice to order like a "kid's" size scoop...I definitely had the look of defeat on my face when I finally finished the whole thing... read more

I just found my new ice cream place outside of the metro area... This place rocks! The flavors are unique, packed with flavor, and fun sounding. One of them was called Playdough. It was almond flavored blue ice cream with these little rainbow colored bits that had the consistency of dough and it gave the ice cream an almost playdoh taste, it was actually really good! I had the Cookie Monster flavor (cookie dough and oreos) which was amazing and my wife enjoyed the Birthday cake. Prices were comparable to a Cold Stone or Dairy Queen. The coolest thing besides the groovy flavors and very, very nice staff was what they call an extra credit scoop. A baby scoop on top of a flavor you want to try. How cool and generous is that? Also if you dare, try the Sweet Sixteen. A large bowl of 16 scoops of ice cream and if you eat it all you get honored on their wall of fame. Neat place, stop by if you are in Hastings. You won't be disappointed. read more

Don't eat ice cream much This is better than Izzy's But somewhat alike I only do ice cream a couple times a year. Not a big sweet tooth or ice cream aficionado. The ice cream at Schoolhouse definitely hit the spot, though. Stopped in on a whim after a trip to Trashy Island. With an extra twenty bucks in my pocket from the Island, decided some ice cream was in order. Like Izzy's, they have 32 different flavors. Got the cinnamon and the pumpkin. They make it thick and creamy - the way it should be. Like Izzy's, they give you an extra little scoop of your choosing - called an extra credit scoop at Schoolhouse. Unlike Izzy's, there is no line and it is much cheaper. Paid less than three bucks for a double scoop, as compared to five bucks at Izzy's for a single scoop. Probably not a very convenient location for most. Worth a stop if you are in Hastings or passing through. read more

I was driving through town and saw this place. It has a full parking lot in the strip mall which is super nice. They have about 20 flavors of ice cream and make fresh waffle cones. The ice cream is unfortunately kemps ice cream. I wanted to try the birthday cake flavor to see if it was to sweet but extremely disappointed that THEY DONT do samples. It's a high school kid running the shop so they don't realize samples sell more ice cream. I ended up getting a orange cream float, they ended up using a can of soda from the dollar store and giving me two single scoops of vanilla ice cream in a tiny cup for -$10.50. Prices are very high for kemp's ice cream and the No samples left a really bad taste in my mouth. Side note waffle cones or any size start at $11.00 dollars. At least there's a bathroom if you buy something; lots of tables and it's air conditioned. I wouldn't recommend for families but if you're in the area and understand it's not home made or, no malts or shakes and it's extremely over priced then it's not terrible. Long story short I won't be back. Ps they also don't have any kids size cones or servings. So if you don't like your ice cream and no samples you're out another 10 to 15 dollars for a new one. Just skip this place, go to cold stone or Dairy Queen. Not family friendly and staff isn't pleasant. read more

History

Established in 2009.

Let us travel back in time when Josh Weinzettel was a student at St John's University and a member of their Entrepreneurial program.... "They wanted us to write business plans and launch businesses by graduation. My mom had always wanted to own an ice cream parlor so I wrote a business plan for one. I then presented my business plan to Pat Regan developer and landlord of Schoolhouse Square and he gave me the green light. I had grown up eating ice cream at Treat Me Sweet and wanted to provide the same atmosphere of hard served ice cream to Hastings. We launched the business in April 2009, taking over the space from Grand Ole Creamery". At that time Schoolhouse Scoop was a seasonal ice cream parlor open from April-October each year. But in the Spring of 2013, the Weinzettel family put the business up for sale, hoping to find someone preferably a family to carry on the Schoolhouse Scoop business. And they found just that, the VanZee family also of Hastings purchased and reopened Schoolhou

A+ Ice Cream Experience! If there were a report card for ice cream shops, Schoolhouse Scoops in Hastings would be on the honor roll! We stopped in for a sweet treat, and let's just say - this little hole in the wall shop is deliciously adorable. The menu? Stacked. Malts, shakes, cake cones, cups, waffle cones (made in-house!), and more. The flavors? Endless. Picking just one? Nearly impossible. But here's the best part: the "extra credit" bonus! You get to try a second flavor - because choosing is hard, and they totally get it. The atmosphere is just as sweet as the ice cream, with charming schoolhouse vibes that make every scoop feel extra special. If you're in Hastings, this is a must-stop spot. Five gold stars and a big ol' A+ from us! read more

Schoolhouse Scoop serves up old-fashioned goodness on a cone! There is always an interesting and flavorful selection of ice creams and sherbets. They also have some super-fun specials (the "extra credit" scoop, and the Sweet 16 challenge). If salty is more your thing, try their fresh popcorn. With flavors like Cheesy, Caramel, Salted Caramel, Cheesy Caramel, as well as seasonal flavors (Birthday Cake and Puppy Chow, to name a couple), you are sure to find something that appeals to everyone! read more

Sebastian Joe's was the perfect stop for an ice cream break on a summer afternoon!…read more I stopped in on a Monday afternoon and loved that I was able to sample as many flavors as I wanted before making the very important decision of what to order. After a few samples, I landed on the coconut ice cream, and I was so happy with my choice! The ice cream has actual coconut shavings mixed throughout, and as someone who LOVES texture in my ice cream, the coconut-to-ice-cream ratio was perfect. You get plenty of coconut in every bite without it being overwhelming. I ordered one scoop, which honestly felt more like two, and had it in a chocolate-dipped cone covered in almonds. SO good! Between the creamy coconut ice cream, coconut shavings, chocolate, and crunch from the almonds, there was a little bit of everything going on. There's also a great outdoor patio with plenty of seating, which made it the perfect place to sit outside and enjoy my cone on a summer afternoon. Generous portions, tons of flavors to sample, and a great patio--I'd absolutely come back to Sebastian Joe's and work my way through more of the flavors!

The employee who answered said he would look into it, then set the phone down and began speaking negatively about me to other staff members--even though I had been polite throughout the call. A few days later, a manager contacted me and apologized, saying they would issue a refund and send a gift card, which I appreciated (though it wasn't necessary). A bit after we walked in someone came from the back to assist us. They had some simple flavors and some unique ones. My mom asked to sample 2 before picking one. I went with the rainbow ice cream.
