The incredible attention to detail, help, commitment and professionalism from everyone at this company, fat surpasses most average customer experiences. We worked with Sam mostly and she literally held our hand every step of the way, welcoming all my questions, changes and indecisiveness of a first time remodel. Loved working with Chris. He took my pencil drawing and made it a real object. There was a little mistep but they handled it really well. In my opinion it's less about mistakes and more about how they are addressed! The vanity for my bathroom is very custom and the attention to the details is there. Very high end custom handmade piece. I moved to Santa Cruz in 1997 and after selling my 20 year Kitchen Business in 2000 I retired. So I know a few things about Kitchens having remodeled 1000's. We are in the process of a kitchen/great room remodel and just had Dave and his team put our cabinets in. I am in awe! They are truly everything and more! I "interviewed" several cabinet makers, and became impressed with the professional team at Schmitz. The staff was so responsive from the git-go. Local, to boot, sold me, but beyond that, the quality is so impressive. Dave measured at least four times before he cut once, which sort of annoyed me at first, but in the end, I appreciated his precision. He was in constant contact, making sure the floor, the drywall, the windows, all the carpentry fit just precisely. His efficiency was immeasurable. Beyond his sufficient skill, Dave has a knack for design. I had a designer who was incredibly helpful, but did not get as detailed. When Dave came out for the third second or third trip, he gave me ideas that I would never had thought of. Those ideas brought the whole project to a truly amazing piece of artwork. I am grateful for such insight with years of the craftsmanship that he possesses. Sam and Brianna, are worker bees! They responded (even on weekends) to my silly questions. Schmitz Woodworks did the cabinetry for my whole house when I was doing new construction in 2005. Dave is a great guy to work with, he delivers a great product at a reasonable price. We had one problem with the kitchen counters not done at the correct height, and he was out the next day, had the old one torn out and the new one installed. After 10 years, their cabinets and built-in bookshelves have held up well. They constructed and installed cabinets for my kitchen, my bathrooms, window seats and drawers in the bedrooms, and bookshelves. And also for a rental unit. Highly recommended. read more

As part of my kitchen remodel Dave and his crew built and installed all new kitchen cabinets. My satisfaction with the service and the products was 100%. But the real reason for my 5 star review: I also asked Dave to build a corner bench in the kitchen. As is not uncommon with these projects a miscommunication - surely my own fault - resulted in a bench seat a few inches shorter than desired. Dave had the entire thing disassembled, returned to his shop, re-engineered, and put back in place, at a price that was impossibly low. He absorbed nearly the entire expense, in order to satisfy a customer, and charged me a token price to mask his grace. How many ways can you explain, or appreciate, that kind of service? There is more going on here than just quality service and products. This is a small business owned by someone who invests his own reputation and character into every job. My grandfather's generation would recognize this style of service. We're lucky to find it here still in Santa Cruz county. read more

It's been a very long year of remodeling, but without Dave Schmitz, Sam, Brianna and everybody on the team, I would not have the house I really wanted. Their amazing custom cabinetry has touched every room in my home. They listened, and delivered precisely what we wanted. The workmanship is the best I have ever seen, and they truly stand behind their install. We chose white shaker for the kitchen, but also used stained knotty alder for the peninsula and bathrooms.
