Difficult, if not impossible to get ahold of, and the whole environment makes me feel like im a nuisance every time I go in. like im inconveniencing the entire staff. I tried for a few months to get ahold of Dr. Schmidt in order to schedule a stress test and heart monitor. two calls to his office and an in person visit (lol, yes, I had to go in to the actual office to speak with his staff,) followed by another phone call, and never heard back. I'm writing this review over again, because they have taken all the negative reviews down, and kept the positive ones, which I find it to be unethical. I'm going to tell the truth here. Dr. Schmidt has changed. He used to be more carrying and understanding. He is still a knowledgeable doctor, but I think he is tired and from being tired he gets grumpy. I don't think he likes his job as much as he used to, and he takes it out on his patients at times. The other part I need to inform other patients, is the staff. There are no words to explain their unprofessionalism. They are flat out dumb. Anyone that works at a doctor's office, should be considerate of the patients, and well-mannered, and friendly. But these young kids -- I say, "kids" because that's how they act, need to grow up and have some respect for Dr. Schmidt's patients. Dr. Schmidt has no clue of their immaturity and incompetency. As soon as Dr. Schmidt walks up to the front office; they quickly stop laughing and talking and try to act professional. Their so fake. I sit there and say, "If Dr. Schmidt only knew." Because they sit there and make fun of patients and talk bad about us. They think we can't hear them sitting in the lobby. I would not come to this doctor's office, because you will have trouble getting anything done relating to your medical procedures, lab work, return calls, referrals, which they forget to submit. I never in my life been to a doctor's office where I've have had so much trouble with the staff in every way. I'm done and will no longer be seeing this doctor again. Says to me, "what do you want me to do about it?" regarding my grandmother being in acute respiratory distress, in part due to his misdiagnosing her, in addition to over medicating her with blood pressure medicine, which he didn't communicate with her specialist about. I will be filing suit against you, Dr. Schmidt, and that process will begin immediately, as well as a formal complaint to the AMA, as well as Medical Board of California. You need to retire. I'd give 0 stars if I could. I wonder why all the reviews are from over five years ago. I'm assuming most of the recent ones have been taken down because they are so bad!!! This man is unprofessional! I went with my daughter to her appointment. We waited in the waiting room for over an hour. She wanted to get a referral for a dermatologist and he spent most of his time talking about vaccines and Pap smears. He told her he had given three Pap smears that day that were unnecessary and said nobody really likes getting "a finger in their butt."Then he talked to her about getting a colonoscopy ...she 27 years old!!! He thought she was 57 and blamed it on his mask and he couldn't see the paper work. He had been talking to her for several minutes so I don't know how he could think she was that old! She wanted him to look at something on her foot ( the reason she wanted the dermatologist referral) and he grabbed her foot with his hand that didn't have the glove and dirty fingernails! When she left he didn't give her the referral. He told her that her skin wasn't that bad. It's a shame that there are doctors out there like this. read more

Love Dr. Schmidt, he really cares for his patients, and he is more than a PCP to me, because he is very intelligent and knowledgeable in every specialty. I didn't want to, but I had to switch doctors due to the fact that his staff is so incompetent, and so rude. Crystal needs to go. Ever since she came on board, there has been so many mistakes with my my families' medical procedures, lab work, referrals, they just don't know or they're lazy to do things right. Crystal is also very combative, and argumentative; but most of all she is a huge liar. She lies to protect herself and tries to make herself look good. When my other doctors don't get the faxes they request from the staff, Crystal blames the fax machine that it doesn't work, or she claims that she sent the faxes, or referrals, when in reality she never did. She thinks we're stupid. And when I talk to my other doctor's office about having trouble getting this staff to do something, they agree with me because they say it's difficult to deal with Dr. Schmidt's staff. So, they have a bad reputation out in the medical field with other staff members of other doctors' offices. The staff before were so efficient, and so nice, everything flowed so nicely. They were on top with everything. I wish they had never left. The only sweet and knowledgeable person there is Mary, she has been with Dr. Schmidt for over 35 years. This is sad, because Dr. Schmidt don't deserve this staff, because it makes him look bad, when he is the best doctor in the world to me. The staff is the face of his business, and they're just doing him wrong, and he doesn't deserve this. These girls should not work with the public, especially patients who are in pain and need their paperwork to get process as soon as possible, but they don't care. I even have heard them talking bad about patients in Spanish, they just laugh, and they think I can't hear them in the lobby, but I do. I just can't believe it. Dr. Schmidt should invest a little bit more money and pay a staff that is professional, and care about his patients as he does, because these girls obviously have no education. Usually an hour or more wait but last time my appointment was at 9 and the wait was so long that i got to work at 12:30 and got called in by my boss. I would give 0 stars honestly. I was going to transfer here originally because both my mother and grandma WENT to him. Key word here WENT. Receptionists are beyond unprofessional, especially Crystal. There was numerous incidents where Crystal would schedule my grandmother, and when we arrive on our scheduled appointment, she would ALWAYS tell her that my grandmother was not scheduled and this last time she literally called my grandmother a liar. Of course, I called Dr. Schmit to complain about Crystal and how she treated one of his long term patients, and he asked what exactly what happened and as I told him what happened he would shut me up because he didn't want to hear it. What kind of Doctor doesn't want to know how their receptionists are treating their patients when Crystal has done this to my grandmother and other patients OFTEN. When I finally got my grandma to get an appointment to see the doctor THROUGH the doctor himself NOT THE RECEPTIONISTS, the moment he saw her he tried to go over the whole ordeal what happened the day before and proceeded to call her a 'troublemaker.' My mother recently went in with knee pain, and Dr asked her how it happened, but as she was TRYING to tell him how it happened, he would completely ignore her and tell her that "that's not how that happened." He had her go get x-rays and didn't get an appointment to go over the results until two weeks later, because my mother isn't able to take his call appointments as they are after 6pm and she works nights so is asleep during the late afternoon. Two weeks later, we waited in the waiting room for an hour and a half for the results of the x-rays, and we completely understand that wait times are going to be long, but when my mom got up to go to the receptionist to ask how much longer the wait would be, immediately the receptionists answered rudely and told my mom to just TRY and make another appointment for the following week and maybe he can get to her.... just so he can read the results of the x-rays. 3 weeks to just get the answer about an x-ray is beyond ridiculous because that appointment is literally going to be less than 10 minutes. My mom changed doctors the same day when we left that waiting room, and my grandmother changed doctors as well the same day. The doctor used to be great years ago as my grandmother had nothing but positive things to say about him, yet recently it's been the exact opposite. Dr. Schmidt has been my primary care doctor for two years. I really like his bedside manner because he explains things well and makes sure he addresses your needs. This does cause the wait time to be rather long. I'm less than thrilled with the office staff. I firmly believe in the saying, "You kill more flies with honey than you do vinegar". For two years I've attempted to be very friendly and considerate to the office staff... but there has been no improvement in the customer service. The following situation is happening as I write; however, most visits have similar experiences. I've had to make multiple calls to ask them to send me lab paperwork for my physical... and eventually went to the office to pick up paperwork to ensure labs were done in time to have results at the time of my physical. Shouldn't they send out the lab paperwork without these reminders?! I've been sitting in the waiting room for almost an hour waiting to be called in for my physical. I asked the staff why I'm still waiting while 4 others came in after me but got called in before me. The staff member told me that their appointments were before mine and they chose to wait in the car... possibly the case for some, but not all. I let her know I heard a patient say her appointment was 30 minutes after my scheduled appointment time. The staff member tried to make excuses but never got up to find out why my wait was so long. I understand things happen. I've had long waits at other doctors offices. The difference is that the other doctors' support staff provides a level of customer service that compensates the long wait for the doctor. read more

Dr. Schmidt is our primary care physician. I swear, I've probably been there about 10 times now, and I've met the man once. You're pretty much in the care of the nurses, assistants, and physican's assistant. Don't bother making an appointment b/c you'll never be seen on time (prepare to wait at least an additional 30-60 minutes). The waiting room can get quite full. Even if you're the first appointment of the day, you'll be seen about 15 minutes after the fact, but that's still way better than the mid-mornings and afternoons. Parking is a pain b/c there is no direct access from the lot. You'll have to either walk through another building or walk around the lot itself. Street parking is accessible, but never available. The reason for the extra star is for the receptionist, Nancy. She is great. Very understanding, attentive, and will go out of her way to make you happy. read more

If you value your time, this isn't the Dr. you want to see. Appointment or walk in you will be waiting in the office for at LEAST 3 hours! No joke. And there isn't even a TV nor a radio in the waiting room! The Dr. does spend as much time with you as needed which kinda makes up for the ridiculous wait; however, I've had a problem arise that he couldn't fix and didn't refer me to a specialist until it was a little too late. I've been tolerant here because I do like the staff but this is what did it for me. It's approximately 100 degrees today and the office doesn't have any water! Now that is a joke! Dr. Schmidt is the real deal. I've been seeing him since 2008 for some mundane and some scary stuff. He is highly skilled, confident and compassionate. In today's IN & OUT service arena, a lot is lost in medical care. Excellent diagnosis and treatment takes time. Some of which needs to be discovered with conversation about "you." Dr. S. takes the time and his first question is, How are you, not what insurance do you have? His office is usually busy but with several generations of Perdo patients who know the well kept secret of his mature, responsible and nurturing care. His staff is busy but professional. If something is urgent but not an emergency talk to them. They won't move you to to first in line but will certainly work you in with reason. Not a 2 month out appointment. As a Doctor, you won't find a more caring one than Dr. Schmidt. However, his administrative staff is a disaster. My wife & I have had to go in numerous times to ask them to please fax our prescriptions to CVS to be filled, after telling them CVS had tried over and over to contact them. The waiting time is ridiculous. You will routinely wait about 45 minutes after your scheduled appointment time. My wife's record was a 3 HOUR wait past her scheduled appointment! When I had to get the doctor to simply notarize a document, the notary and I had to wait over half an hour. If you want the doctor to give you a physical, there's a 6-month waiting period. I had no problem scheduling that far in advance, but then one week before my scheduled physical the receptionist called and said they had made a mistake and had scheduled my physical for a day when they were closed, so I'd have to wait another 6 months!!! Nancy use to be the receptionist, and she was wonderful, but left. The new one, Minna, probably can't find her way to the office and back home 3 out of 5 days. When I told her that she and her entire front-office staff were incompetent, she told Dr. Schmidt I called him incompetent. He immediately, without asking me and my wife about the incident, told me and my wife he would no longer agree to being our doctor. This does speak highly of him as to his loyalty to his staff, but sadly, that loyalty is misplaced. I do have to thank Minna, though, for he lie. We now go to Dr. Greenberg at the Providence Care Center on 1st St. and Western. We've both seen the doctor 3 times and, OMG, what a difference!! We have never had to wait more that 10 minutes past our scheduled appointment time to see him. So, if you're looking for a great doctor, with a totally incompetent front-office staff, where you have to wait hours past your appointment time to see the doctor, where you have to baby-sit that staff on insurance filings and prescription refills, don't mind waiting months to be rescheduled for appointments because the staff made a mistake, and have to put up with terrible parking issues, then Dr. Schmidt is your guy! read more

Do not go here if you want proper treatment, a genuine doctor who will identify and fix health issues and certainly do not go here if you find your time valuable. Unfortunately I've wasted the past 5 years of my health at this poor establishment. Fortunately when I went to a qualified doctor I wasn't given serious conditions that were overlooked by this doctor unlike the several people I know who now are properly addressing there medical concerns with qualified doctors and getting quality care. In addition I've never spent so much time waiting in a doctor office lobby, then more time on top of that in an empty patient room to be seen by an over-confident, under-qualified, non-humorous individual. The office staff is sub-par and lacks professionalism. They are incapable of properly communicating as adults. The interaction between them and myself left me very interested in how these individuals even secured a job. The interaction between them and other patients and office vendors was even more interesting to observe. This is a great example of poor office management and a doctor who just doesn't offer the same service anymore. Nobody should waste their valuable insurance money on this facility. read more

I have been a patient of Dr. Schmidt for 10 years. He is an excellent doctor who deeply cares for his patients. Some have stated long wait times as a problem, however I look at it as the reality it is; When he walks into the examination room, YOU are who matters! He does this for every patient. His focus is on you, and when you leave you have your care plan established (with drawings if necessary). You leave knowing you're going to be okay, because Dr. Schmidt is taking care of you. As for his support staff, they are wonderful! I feel privileged and lucky to have found a doctor and individuals like Mena who I feel very comfortable with, and care about as if they are family!! I've been seeing Dr. Schmidt for eight years. He is very caring and takes his time to explain with diagrams if needed what is going wrong in the body. His staff is really nice. Yes there is always a wait. Yes I make an appointment and then call ahead. They call your cell phone to tell you when to come in so you don't have to wait in the waiting room. Yes there is usually a wait of about 30-60 minutes once you get there. BUT, once you are in the room with him you have HIS COMPLETE UNDIVIDED ATTENTION!! That is what makes Dr. Schmidt amazing. Dr Schmidt is OK, but his staff is generally terrible. Nancy may be OK, but many of the others are cranky, make mistakes etc... It can take weeks to get an appointment, when you finally get one the wait is terrible. Years ago you could see him or his partner on a Saturday, or a Wednesday night. Now he's solo, he does NOT have Wednesday night or Saturday appointments, and I think he's actually there twice a week at best. They have messed up appointments, records, and once the nurse (?) gave my husband incorrect information about an injection he was about to receive. My husband got nervous and just told them to forget it, and he left. I checked with the CDC later and that nurse did NOT know what she was talking about! Would she have given my husband the wrong injection???? YIKES. Then they charged someone else's appointment to my husband's insurance! I say switch to his former partner's group, Dr. Jimenez/team on 1st & Western, who NEVER makes you wait weeks to get in. read more

When you see a bunch of REALLY SHORT 5-star reviews and a bunch VERY LONG 1-star reviews, you can count on the 5-star ones being FAKE! This guy is just CREEPY! He seems to think his patients are so impressed with his boring conversation. He spends so much time talking about his personal life. Really creepy! This doctor's office also has serious control issues, especially when it comes to prescriptions. The office staff is completely apathetic. They are cavalier about their bad attitudes. They lord the prescriptions over you and make you jump through their childish hoops to get them filled. If you can actually get a staff member on the phone, they are abrupt, unfriendly and downright RUDE. This office seems to have a "we're not gonna take any CRAP from patients" attitude. Be prepared for very long wait times if you are a patient. You can hear patients in the waiting room comparing notes on how long they've been there, and some were there for 2-3 hours. A fellow staff member/patient waited over 2 hours. The majority of the problems I had were with the front office staff that while friendly left me anxious of the accuracy and quality of care and proper billing of my visits. My insurance card was left in the copier, and I had to return to the office to retrieve it when I went to a local pharmacy and realized it had never been returned to me. Not only was it left in the copier, but it was never actually copied. I learned this on a visit two weeks later when they verified my insurance and they still had my previous insurance on record. I was given a referral phone number for a specialist, and the phone number was inaccurate. On one visit, none of the office staff present that day knew how to enter procedures in the system being utilized at the time. If you're one of the lucky ones to actually see the doctor, he's a very nice individual. The front office staff are relatively friendly as well. I just wish I wasn't nervous after each visit if the administrative side will be properly taken care of. Bottom line: If I was asked to recommend this office, I would be hesitant. read more

I have been a patient of Dr. Schmidts for over 30 years and have received the best care from the doctor and his staff. Although Dr. Schmidt is extremely popular and busy, he takes his time when he sees you to carefully explain your diagnosis and listens to you if needed. He is so very thorough. And I cannot speak highly enough of his office manager Mena who is always so sweet and willing to help others out no matter how busy she is. This office is greatly efficient due to Mena. My brother was a patient of Dr Schmidt while he was in a nursing home. During that time Dr. Schmidt indicated he was seeing my brother on a daily basis. However, my brother indicated to me that he never saw the Doctor in all the time he was at the nursing home. In my investigation of this, I found my brother 's statement to be true. Consequently, Dr. Schmidt was released by us as the treating Doctor. I would definitely find a doctor other than Dr. Schmidt. I arrived on time for my 12:30 appointment. After waiting (with many others!) in the waiting area, I was finally let into a room at 1:45. (Yes! One hour and fifteen minutes in the waiting area!) Once inside one of the patient rooms, I thought I would be promptly seen. However, it was about 2:15 when the NP came in for my appointment. I recently had an appt with Dr. Schmidt at 11AM and arrived a few minutes early just to be safe. The staff seemed nice and instructed me to sign-in and to wait in the waiting area. The place didn't seem too busy as there were only about 4 to 5 other patients waiting also. After a while, new people started to walk in and sit down. I continued to wait and watched as many of the people that had arrived more then 45 minutes after me get called into the back. After an hour and a half I finally asked the receptionist what the heck was going on because I seriously thought they had forgotten me. I was told to keep waiting and that the people that came in after me called ahead and so they were on the list above me (which negates the point of appointments in the first place. Long story short, after an hour and a half in the waiting room I finally got called. Unfortunately I had to wait at least another 35 minutes in the patient room to see the RN who informed me that I wont be seeing Dr. Schmidt because he doesn't get into the office before 2PM. Awesome right? Luckily the head nurse in charge was very nice and knew exactly what she was doing, she took a look, prescribed me some antibiotics and I was out of there in less then 5 minutes..just how I like it. Besides that, I don't think I'll be going there again. read more

I have been a patient for over 30 years and yes the wait is long, but the time dr Schmidt spends with others, is the same amount or more, he will spend with you as well! So I'm sorry you never had the experience of meeting the great dr Schmidt, Shannon W, it's your loss! Now you can go find yourself a dr that won't make you wait (Good luck by the way) AND now, dr Schmidt and his wonderful staff don't have to put up with you! Dr. Schmidt is our family Dr for 20+ years. He is excellent and yes he does have a nurse practitioner because his office is so busy. Why? Because half of San Pedro prefers to see him. You do wait a long time sometimes, but that's because when someone needs to be seen for a sudden illness, or major problem, they always fit you in. So the healthy, minor problem patient, may wait a little longer. The staff, Mena, Mary and the other girls are all very professional and helpful. They know us and are very personable, remembering all our names every time we come in. I wouldn't see anyone else. Dr. Schmidt gives you his full attention and time, which sometimes runs into the time for someone else. I've been to other Dr's in the past and heard the complaint from friends that the Dr they've seen takes them 10 minutes or less, throw a prescription at your face and say see ya later - never really listening nor caring - just a revolving door of the next dollar. When they come in, you can tell they have no idea who you are, don't even know your name without looking at the chart. Not the case here. Unfortunately I was never able to see the Dr. He must have a booming business and upholds his reputation. It is a shame that his office manager Mena doesn't practice a similar attention to detail and precision that almost all of the reviews rave on about Dr. Schmidt. Due to a 90 minute wait, and a very intolerant Mena explaining it would be another hour.....I will never know how great Dr. Schmidt is. And that was with an appointment. I guess new patients aren't as valuable as old ones. The lack of communication from office staff to patients, and the disregard for somebody's time and medical issues are unacceptable. Not to detail the unprofessionalism and lack of respect towards a patient. I am disappointed in Mena specifically, for lack of patience and poor customer service. Dr. Schmidt may be great (from what I read) however, the face of his establishment has definitely deemed herself incapable of providing adequate care. Mena should not work with the general public, and definitely avoid any patient interactions. It is sad that she is having her family members post on yelp. The truth comes from the client. Health care in this day and age is confusing, it is important when you do see a Dr. that they have your best interest at heart and Dr Schmidt does, and he will be your advocate. Regardless of your age he will help guide you to the best health possible. Dr Schmidt will spend as much time with you and answer questions with as much depth and insight as he can, he cares about his patients. I have seen him when I am not feeling well, He is very thorough and orders additional tests to rule things out; he made sure I was happy with the referrals he gave. He takes notes and refers back to them in your chart from year to year, and follows up to make sure you're recovering. I have also been there when I am healthy and we discussed diet and exercise, he measured my body fat and we discussed my blood work in depth ways to improve things over a life time.
