Last year I went to this dentist for a normal cleaning with a few cavity fillings. Before going in the room we had an agreement they would work up to my covered amount and will not go over. Apparently this was not told to the dentist in the room who actually worked on me. They never offered an estimate on how much it would be, I know that was my mistake but they should at least offer especially to a new client. The dentist in the room then went a head and did as much as she could in one sitting with no regard to how much it will cost in the end. And when I asked? She didn't even know how much her work was costing since billing is done in the front room. In the end I was charged double my covered amount, twice as much as we agreed upon and their excuse was "sometimes we go over by a little." No apology, nothing. I will never go back to this place. No top of all this they don't contact me for a year and a half and tell me I have to pay $1000+ by Christmas or they will send it to collections. Great! If you ever go here make sure you go into detail what you what done and have them advise you how much it will cost before entering the room, and once you are in there do NOT agree to any extra work.

I experienced lazer treatment to remove an old filling this week …read more it was amazing no freezing L would recommend this procedure over freezing and drilling . The staff are friendly and knowledgeable .

This isn't a bad dentist, it was better than my last dentist, but I was in that whole "well I've…read morebeen going to this dentist for so long and I'm too lazy to find a new one" phase. I've finally changed dentists (see my profile for my review of my new super awesome dentist) Staff are friendly and will remember things about you that you mentioned a long time ago. They serve coffee and tea while you wait. I have never had to wait long with them whereas with my old dentist I could be waiting for almost an hour! Dr. Janice Mummery is helpful and polite. She doesn't do too much chit chat with you and she sees you at the end of every appointment. Things I didn't like: 1) Trying to sell me things I didn't want. From special toothpastes, high end toothbrushes, teeth whitening, and trying to get me to change my silver fillings to white fillings for cosmetic purposes. My fillings are fine and I don't care if people see I have silver fillings. 2) Reminder calls. They used to give me a reminder call 2 weeks in advance. Sorry, my memory is pretty poor and I'm not going to remember. I had to get them to make a note to remind me the day before. 3) Missed appointments. I understand their missed appointment policy and charging me, but they wanted to charge me for an appointment I had to cancel last minute because I had to rush my dog for an emergency to the veterinarian. In the end they didn't, but trying to charge me for something like that didn't win them any points in my book.

This review has been a long-time coming and I want to be thorough so it will be lengthy. Grab a…read moresnack and settle in. I was a patient a Royal York Dental for over 7 years, maybe closer to 10, and I left because I finally had enough. I have a clear memory at my initial appointment of being told that if my insurance situation ever changed, to let them know, as they would do what they could to manage cost. At some point I went freelance and let them know I no longer had insurance. Unfortunately, by the time this happened the business had already changed ownership and my dental visits only seemed to get more expensive from there on out until I finally decided enough was enough. In recent years, every visit at Royal York Dental I was told - strongly - that I didn't take care of my teeth. I was told I didn't floss enough and as a result my gums were recessing and in the near future I would probably need a gum graft. A GUM GRAFT. I also should buy an expensive Sonicare toothbrush - which they just happen to sell there. I got so many units of scaling I could have opened a rock-climbing gym. Nothing was ever optional, everything was "necessary". Not to mention, my cleanings were always painful no matter how well I took care of my teeth (so. much. scaling). There was even a time between visits where I flossed every single day. I made it my mission. I went in and was told I need to floss more and I was headed towards a larger issue. They made me feel like I lost the dental genetic lottery no matter what I did. I started to ask around among my friends and I realized - none of them were *this* unhappy with their dentist visits. I was convinced I must have bad teeth but I'd give a new place a shot because the cost at RYD was just getting to be too much. WELL - I just had an incredibly thorough (and oddly enough, not painful) cleaning, exam and x-rays elsewhere and both the dentist and hygienist said my teeth were actually in great shape. My recessing gums? Turns out they aren't changing and in fact, they are what they would expect from someone who had braces. Nothing to worry about. Especially not with how well I take care of my teeth. HUH. They also charge the provincially recommended amounts for dental services. And the front desk staff were wonderful. I came home in shock. Do not go to Royal York Dental. After years of being lied to I feel obligated to share and warn others. Going to the dentist doesn't need to be expensive or worrisome. Lastly, if you're a current patient reading this and you feel like maybe there's some dental gaslighting going on - it's worth it to start over elsewhere.

I don't share the other reviewer's glowing comments. The longest Dr. Sky spent with me was during…read morethe initial new patient consultation. The plan, as per the initial consult and numerous e-mails back and forth prior to treatment, was to close a gap due to a missing molar. I paid $7,000 up front. I learned from personal experience that Dr. Sky takes a hands off approach to her patients. During my treatment, Dr. Sky was rarely in the office. The number of times I saw her, which I could probably count on one hand, was mainly for a few minutes before she rushed off. The work was performed by the dental hygienists or the resident dentist and Dr. Sky was not in the office to review their work. The one and only time she reviewed the hygienist's work was for the initial placement of the brackets. It was up to me to repeatedly communicate what the goal of treatment was because the staff didn't seem to know. Today, my front bottom teeth have gaps, where none existed before treatment. I have severe localized gum recession on one of the lower front teeth due to orthodontic forces and carelessness on the part of the hygienist. This one poor tooth was pulled and prodded with excessive force when removing a bracket and on a subsequent visit, when an archwire was placed. During this visit, I thought I was going to pass out from the pain. When I finally had enough and cried out that my lower front teeth were being pulled, the hygienist calmly replied: "I'm not pulling, I'm pushing!" She continued to apply enough force to partially detach the root from the tooth----this was confirmed to me by a periodontist. The pain I suffered and endured for weeks on end from this horrific event was unbelievable! Why a TAD was not considered or placed to close the gap for the missing tooth is anyone's guess. After a year and a half of treatment, the gap that was supposed to be closed is still wide open. I am worse off today than when I started. I now face very expensive gum flap or pinhole surgery, deep cleaning and regular periodontal visits. As a patient and a mom, would I bring my children to be treated by Dr. Sky Naslenas at Royal York Orthodontic Studio? Never!
