"Cigars and handshakes, appreciate you but no thanks
Another gear in a big machine don't sound like fun to me
Don't wanna be a part of your good ol' boys club"
(Kacey Musgraves)
I've heard of book clubs, anime clubs, photography clubs, debate clubs, chess clubs, and Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club.
But how about a Scandinavian Club?
Well we found one in Fairfield because they hosted a Christmas Market today, and I gotta tell ya, the parking lot was jam packed and the dozens of sales booths were super crowded.
Our adventure started in the parking lot where a considerate patron was backed out of her spot, waved us on to park there, and then thoughtfully backed up to block a latecomer looking to mooch our spot. LOL, that was awesome!!
The parking lot and the big exhibition hall flew the flags of the Scandinavian countries, and if you're wondering who they are, how about Denmark, Norway, Sweden, Finland and Iceland.
The Christmas Market was great, and we saw scores of sales booths by local artists, crafters, and assorted vendors.
There was also a cafe selling some Scandinavian goodies like salmon chowder, lentil pate, and Glogg in low test and hi test versions.
We had lunch there and ordered a bowl of the salmon chowder ($10) and a plate of the pate ($10). The salmon chowder was the most popular food on the menu, and when I ordered it around 1:00 pm, only two portions remained after my bowl was filled. It was delicious and loaded with big hunks of salmon and potatoes. The pate was terrific too, served on rye bread slices with lingonberries and itty bitty cornichon slices.
After we finished shopping and lunch, we strolled around the grounds and saw a big deck behind the building that seems to be custom made for summer parties.
We had a great time, and felt very welcome, even if we have 0% Scandinavian blood in our veins. read more
