I had bought a Kymco like scooter about a month ago and it stalled on me on the road. SC motorcycle...I have a 2016 Harley Dyna wide glide. It had been sitting for a while due to my physical limitations. Those are thankfully in the rear view mirror. I needed a complete oil change and wanted to make sure the bike was in good shape. The dealership is out for a variety of reasons. Mainly it's expensive. SC has been around for a lot of years but in San Clemente... outside of my orbit...however, recently they moved up to Mission Viejo a lot closer to where I live. I called and explained that my bike had been stationary for a while and it needed some TLC. I made an appointment so they could do what I needed while I hung around. So the morning of my appointment I rolled up & and they were waiting. Everybody was very relaxed and they started on the bike while I got something to eat. I came back a bit over an hour later and the bike was good to go. The bill was reasonable ( I had some new grips put on as well). I discovered I had a turn signal issue they didn't flash...they found out the replacement bulbs (LED) didn't connect properly so they just sanded down the contacts a bit and bingo they seated and now work properly. (There was no charge) End result: I'm very pleased. The work was done quickly, the cost was reasonable and the people were great. If you're in the lake forest/mission v area bring your bike in. San Clemente Motorcycle is a completely different experience compared to their competitors, especially the dealerships. I'm not quite sure how to define it. In other shops I felt I had to be somewhat on guard in order to not be taken advantage of. Here at San Clemente Motorcycle you get a sense they care more about you and your bike than making a profit and that they would actually try to talk you out of incurring unnecessary expense. Honest mechanics are about as rare as finding Bigfoot riding a unicorn but at San Clemente Motorcycle, that's what you get. I was fortunate enough to be able to wait for the completion of my repairs while relaxing on their comfortable sofa. I was in and out so quickly I tipped them. I never did that with a bike shop before. Like I said, there's just something about this place that "feels" different. Schedule with them once and see for yourself why they are in such demand. I've used their shop to replace three tires on removed wheel assemblies I brought to the shop. Very reasonable price for tire mount and balance services. The staff is always friendly and accommodating to requests to come in and wait for tire replacement (usually 30-60 minutes for dates and times discussed with them ahead of time). Super happy with the customer service here, and their friendliness. I was going to put new handlebars on my HD Street Glide. I ordered the bars, wiring, and necessary components to do the job myself. I stripped the bike down and realized I got myself in way over my head with having to internally rewire the bars. I took the bars and wiring in to SC Rider Supply a few days before Christmas and explained my situation with having a torn down bike in my garage. They were able to accommodate me by rewiring the bars so I could get them back on my bike. Go to this place if looking for motorcycle gear. I just began riding last month and I've gone to this place for everything so far. When I showed up, I had only a general idea what u was looking for. Greg showed me through jackets, gloves, boots, helmets, and accessories. He was very helpful describing all the product; I ended up buying pretty much everything he suggested. When I bought my bike, he took a look at it and made a whole bunch of suggestions on dates and mileages for service that they could perform (and I will definitely take them up on that). When my girlfriend began riding, we came back in and hooked her up the same as me. This place has a small business, local feel that is unbeatable. Although they don't have everything in stock at all times, they have plenty of catalogues and will order anything that you'd like and get it quick (my helmet came in a day). I'll tell you my story and you can decide what you think. Moral of the story if you don't want to read... Check their work. I've bought parts here and will continue to do so, with the exception of crush washers for my oil drain plug. I was given a generic flat washer. I used it, knowing it was temporary, and sure enough it started leaking before I had a chance to get a proper crush washer. I knew what I was getting into, so for me, no harm no foul. 3 stars. Service was a different story. Experience 1: Bought new tires with a gift certificate and since I had changed jobs, no longer had access to tire machines to do my own labor. So first time in 8 years having someone change my tires for me. Brought the wheels in off the bike. Was a Sunday afternoon and they did a great job swapping the tires and balancing them so that I could put the tires back on. My bike is my daily driver, so it was important to me. 5 stars. Experience 2: I commute 80 miles a day, 14,400 miles later(not a typo) I needed to replace my Pirelli Angel GT's. They had the tires in stock and convinced me to just drop the bike off and let them do all the work. I walked to HH Cottons for lunch, came back and it was done. The tech seemed knowledgeable and mentioned everything felt great but that I should adjust my clutch cable. Easy fix when I got home. Felt good enough that I didn't check their work. Bad mistake. When I tension my chain I use a laser aligner and use factory torque specs. I know how long I can ride before my chain will need cleaning and adjusting. I'll own up to my mistake. Rather than clean/lube/adjust the chain after a week and a half, I let it go closer to three weeks. Done it a few times, no big deal. I've put 50,000 miles on this bike, I know what I can get away with. Here's where it goes downhill. When I checked the chain, it was incredibly tight. It should have had about 3/4" deflection and it had none. I tried to loosen the axle to adjust my chain and couldn't get it to budge. I took it to the shop on my way to work to have them loosen it and was told that it's because I don't have the right tools for the job and should leave the work to the pros. Rear axle torque is 72.5 ft/lbs. I have an use a torque wrench. If properly torqued, it would have come off easily. The tech came out with a socket and wrench and couldn't get it off. Swapped out for a long breaker bar and at first attempt... Couldn't get it to budge. He tried again almost tipping my bike over putting all his weight into it and barely got it to move. He said something under his breath got it back to a reasonable torque so that I could make it to work, then adjust my chain when I got home. So, horribly incorrect torque setting. Unfortunately the tight chain which was my reason for this whole mess, created another issue. When I got the chain off that night and inspected the rear sprocket, I saw that it was really worn down and a few teeth had even flattened out. I was upset, but whatever. I learned a lesson to check another techs work. Fast forward another 14,000 miles and it's time to replace my tires again. Decided to go to a shop near my office and watch the tech do the replacement knowing that if I'm not doing the labor, I need to at least make sure the work is done right. This tech knows his stuff. He knows that tightening the rear axle will increase the tightness of my chain as well. He recognizes that I'm watching him and that I know what to do. For better or worse(I won't judge) he asks if I would prefer to tighten and properly torque the rear while he moves to the front. It was my lunch break, so I said sure! If you have done your own tires/maintenance then you know, the front doesn't need the same regular adjustment as the rear. The last time the front wheel was removed was the last tire change. Four caliper bolts. All were over tightened. This tech was using snap-on tools, and one of the caliper bolts was so tight that the hex stripped out the head. He was able to jam in a larger hex and it stripped out even further. Needless to say, he had to break out his welder, weld a nut on the end and use socket to remove the last caliper bolt. Thankfully he had another bike in the shop with the same brembo calipers and was able to "borrow" a bolt. So! 5 over torqued bolts, one that required a massive breaker bar, another required welding, and a chain and rear sprocket that wore prematurely. 0 stars for second tire change. Average of 3 stars between a few parts visits and two service visits. I *might try them again for service, but only as a last resort and I will check every bolt and the chain for proper torque specs and alignment. If you don't know how to check the repairs, I suggest you learn, take your bike to a different shop, or just be okay with rolling the dice. read more
